NCRI – Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, has hailed Iranian political prisoners who have gone on hunger strike in support of the rights of Iranian teachers.<\/p>\n
“Hail to political prisoners and everyone who is on hunger strike in support of Iranian teachers,” Mrs. Rajavi said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Her remarks were published on her Facebook page.<\/p>\n
“The people of Iran stand by their teachers today, on hunger strike and in protests and resistance,” Mrs. Rajavi said.<\/p>\n
“Prosecution and harassment of officers of the Teachers’ Corporate League indicates the mullahs’ vulnerability to their organized protests,” she added.<\/p>\n
Iranian teachers held a protest on Friday in Hamedan, western Iran, demanding their basic rights and the release of imprisoned teachers, according to reports from Iran.<\/p>\n
The teachers held up banners which pointed out that their colleagues were being arrested in Iran simply for demanding their basic rights, such as fair wages.<\/p>\n
Numerous teachers from banned teaching unions have been arrested for their peaceful activities in Iran.<\/p>\n
According to reports from inside Iran, a number of political prisoners in Tehran\u2019s notorious Evin Prison are on hunger strike.<\/p>\n
Political prisoners Jafar Azimzadeh, a worker\u2019s rights activist, and Ismail Abdi, Secretary General of Iran\u2019s Teachers\u2019 Trade Association (ITTA), are in the second week of an indefinite hunger strike. In a statement they outlined the reasons for their hunger strike.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn protest to the crackdown on civil activities and gatherings and strikes by workers and teachers, wages below the poverty line, a ban on independent and free gatherings to mark International Workers\u2019 Day and Teachers Day in Iran and violations of basic rights of Iran\u2019s workers and teachers, we are refusing prison food and embarking on an indefinite hunger strike commencing April 29, 2016,\u201d their statement said.<\/p>\n
Another political prisoner Ali Moezzi, whose relatives are members of the main Iranian opposition group People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK), on Friday joined Mr. Abdi and Mr. Azimzadeh on hunger strike as a sign of solidarity.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Mr. Moezzi, a supporter of the PMOI (MEK), said: \u201cA regime which suppresses civil associations and activists would never provide for the trampled rights of teachers and laborers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Moezzi, who is a political prisoner of the 1980s due to his support for the PMOI (MEK), suffers from various diseases, including cancer and acute kidney disease, and his health has deteriorated from years of torture in the Iranian regime\u2019s dungeons and the systematic denial of proper medical treatment. Two of his daughters are members of the PMOI (MEK).<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s fundamentalist regime has executed more than 120,000 political prisoners in the past 35 years, the vast majority PMOI (MEK) members and supporters. This includes the massacre of some 30,000 prisoners affiliated to the PMOI (MEK) in the summer of 1988. The PMOI (MEK) is the largest member organization in the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).<\/p>\n
Separately, imprisoned teacher Mahmoud Beheshti Langaroudi, former secretary general and current speaker of Iran\u2019s teachers\u2019 union, started a hunger strike on April 20 in Evin Prison in protest to his 14-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n
He began a dry hunger strike on Monday.<\/p>\n
Mr. Langaroudi has been arrested several times during the past few years and has been physically and psychologically tortured. He was most recently detained on September 6, 2015 when Ministry of Intelligence agents raided his home. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison by the regime\u2019s so-called revolutionary courts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
