The miners, from Bafq Iron Ore Company, had been condemned for their union protest in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Bafq is situated in the central Iranian province of Yazd.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad Ali Jaddari Forughi, a lawyer for the arrested miners said: &#8220;In the first verdict [of the miners], Mohammad Hassan Tashakkori, was sentenced to an 11-month suspended prison sentence and 50 suspended lashes; the second defendant was sentenced to a 4-month suspended sentence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;In the second verdict, the other seven workers were sentenced to a seven-month suspended sentence and 30 suspended lashes each.&#8221; His remarks were carried on Monday, June 6, by the state-run ILNA news agency.<\/p>\n<p>All of the above sentences are suspended for a period of five years, according to state media.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20438-17-workers-flogged-for-protests-after-losing-work-at-iran-mine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">the flogging of 17 miners<\/a>, who protested the dismissal of 350 workers from the Agh Dara gold mine, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20486-another-70-people-arrested-in-iran-for-attending-mixed-gender-party-in-restaurant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">numerous<\/a> young people, who attended mixed-gender parties, brought worldwide condemnation for the Iranian regime including from the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for The UN\u2019s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra\u2019ad Al Hussein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20464-un-human-rights-body-condemns-floggings-in-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>: &#8220;Flogging is prohibited under international human rights law, in particular, the Convention against Torture. The UN Committee against Torture, the Human Rights Committee, and UN Special Rapporteurs have repeatedly voiced serious concerns about States\u2019 use of flogging\u2026and have called for its abolition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the authorities to have meted out this cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment \u2013 which could amount to torture \u2013 is completely disproportionate and abhorrent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NCRI &ndash; Nine more miners have been sentenced to imprisonment and flogging by the oppressive Iranian regime.
