{"id":20937,"date":"2016-08-21T10:02:26","date_gmt":"2016-08-21T09:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/human-rights\/20937-metro-here-s-what-it-s-like-to-be-a-political-prisoner-in-iran"},"modified":"2023-01-16T14:27:41","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T13:27:41","slug":"metro-here-s-what-it-s-like-to-be-a-political-prisoner-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/metro-here-s-what-it-s-like-to-be-a-political-prisoner-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"METRO: Here\u2019s what it\u2019s like to be a political prisoner in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"farzad-madadzadeh-1\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/08\/farzad-madadzadeh-1.jpg\" alt=\"farzad-madadzadeh-1\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/farzad-madadzadeh-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/farzad-madadzadeh-1-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The article, &#8216;Here\u2019s what it\u2019s like to be a political prisoner in Iran&#8217; was <a href=\"http:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2016\/08\/20\/heres-what-its-like-to-be-a-political-prisoner-in-iran-6080718\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> on\u00a0Metro.co.uk, 20 Aug 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In this article Farzad Madadzadeh, the prominent Iranian political prisoner, speaks at length about the harsh conditions he experienced first-hand, and describes Shocking Treatment of the Political Prisoners Held in Evin Prison and its notorious Ward 209 \u2013 run by the intelligence ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The following is the text of the article:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Farzad Madadzadeh had just\u00a0dropped off a fare in Karaj\u00a0and was returning to Tehran when his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>It was the police, the officer on the line asked him to come to a station in the Iranian capital\u00a0for what the taxi driver assumed were mundane reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I thought that it related to my taxi driving,\u2019 Farzad told\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;inherit\" href=\"http:\/\/metro.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">metro.co.uk<\/a>\u00a0from a location\u00a0In Paris.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Perhaps someone had taken my license plate down and reported me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>What followed was an arrest, months of interrogation, what he described as brutal beatings and solitary confinement, followed by a\u00a0trial that lasted a matter of minutes and then five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>But the taxi driver was one of the lucky ones.<\/p>\n<p>Arrested in 2009 and then released from prison in 2014, he was one of tens of thousands of prisoners incarcerated at\u00a0that time.<\/p>\n<p>But while he faced a five year prison term, others wouldn\u2019t escape with their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International estimates that\u00a0between 2013 and 2015 around 2,000 people have been\u00a0executed in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>And a recent escalation \u2013 including the hanging of\u00a020 Sunni inmates at\u00a0Gohardasht Prison earlier this month\u00a0\u2013 has left many fearing we could see a return of something akin to one of the bloodiest periods in Iran\u2019s recent history.<\/p>\n<p>In 1988 the regime executed\u00a0as many as\u00a030,000 political prisoners. Something which The British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom recently said should be considered a crime against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Farzad became a political prisoner himself. His active support of the People\u2019s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI), an opposition group within Iran, had captured the attention of the authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When I went inside the station I saw that the atmosphere was not normal,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There were several plain clothes policemen there.\u00a0I didn\u2019t realise at the time but they were agents of the ministry of intelligence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2016-08-21_11-47-38\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_11-47-38.png\" alt=\"2016-08-21_11-47-38\" width=\"750\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_11-47-38.png 750w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_11-47-38-300x242.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_11-47-38-696x562.png 696w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_11-47-38-520x420.png 520w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Farzad said once they realised it was him, he was jumped on and his possessions\u00a0confiscated.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I asked them \u201cwho are you?\u201d they told me \u201cit has nothing to do with you\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I said \u201cgive me a warrant\u201d, \u201ctell me what it\u2019s about\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They took a hood out put it on my head and threw me in a\u00a0car.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He would be taken\u00a0to Evin Prison and its notorious Ward 209 \u2013 run by the intelligence ministry.<\/p>\n<p>While there he would get first hand experience of the brutal methods used by interrogators to extract information from their prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018They would take me at eight or nine in the morning or eight or nine in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Whatever information they wanted from me, if I wouldn\u2019t give it to them they would start to beat me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There was three of them and they would kick me around like a football.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This was not just to extract information from me also they wanted me to make a false confession.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Provide false evidence against the PMOI. In essence, to lie about everything I believed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But to be honest with you the worst of the torture was the solitary confinement.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Farzad would spend two three month spells in solitary confinement.<\/p>\n<p>The long spells can have a particularly sharp impact on both physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>British mum Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has just faced trial in Iran after she was\u00a0accused of being a \u2018Western spy\u2019, was left unable to walk after 45 days.<\/p>\n<p>And ward 209 is not just for supporters of the PMOI.<\/p>\n<p>Farzad explained:\u00a0\u2018Anybody who is arrested by the intelligence ministry of the revolutionary guard. First of all they are tortured, nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Unless that particular person from day one is willing to cooperate and say what ever the regime wants, that\u2019s the only exception.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But even that is only after torture.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As a supporter of the PMOI, Farzad had taken part in human rights activities, supported\u00a0families of prisoners and conveyed their news outside Iran.<\/p>\n<p>He also took part in anti-regime protests, as he explained his \u2018first priority was activities against the regime.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Such activity carries a risk but as Farzad explained it was one he, and others, were prepared to face.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2016-08-21_12-01-24-750\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_12-01-24-750.png\" alt=\"2016-08-21_12-01-24-750\" width=\"750\" height=\"1233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_12-01-24-750.png 750w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_12-01-24-750-182x300.png 182w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_12-01-24-750-623x1024.png 623w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_12-01-24-750-696x1144.png 696w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_12-01-24-750-255x420.png 255w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-21_12-01-24-750-511x840.png 511w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018It is the right of any individual to protest. I recognise this right for myself as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Many of my other friends realised this right for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Of course, the price is high many of them are in prison now, are executed now.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I accepted that if it comes to that I would be willing to pay the price for it with my life.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For me this sort of thing happened a lot in prison.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>For his participation in anti-regime\u00a0activities, Farzad would eventually face two charges, something akin to \u2018Enmity against God\u2019 and also Having a Relationship with the PMOI.<\/p>\n<p>He did appear in court, but not in a manner we would be used to seeing in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was taken once to court.\u00a0When the court session was held, it lasted five minutes,\u2019 he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In five minutes the judge told me you are accused of War on God and having a Relationship with the PMOI they do not give me a chance to defend myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I just told them \u201ca lot to what you are saying are lies, I don\u2019t accept what you are saying\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Two weeks later they informed me I had a five year sentence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Farzad would sevre four years of his term under\u00a0Mahmoud Ahmadinejad\u2019s rule and then the final year under that of Hassan Rouhani, the current president.<\/p>\n<p>He said in that time, and since his release, things have got worse, not better.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u2018For us not only did the human rights situation not improve it got worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The atmosphere in prison became more closed, for example, hospital treatment for those that are ill, that was put off completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The number of arrests increased; teachers workers, all sorts of people.\u00a0Also the number of executions of prisoners was higher.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The increasing level of suppression has led to a growing fear that the government could exercise its power in a mass execution akin to that in 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Last year alone, Amnesty International says some 977 prisoners were executed.<\/p>\n<p>Farzad fears a repeat of what occurred in 88 is as a real possibility.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018The atmosphere of the prisons is closed again and even the prisoners are warning their own relatives of this.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For example, just yesterday a letter was published by an opposition website from political prisoners warning the international community and human rights groups that another mass execution could take place.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Multiple demonstrations have taken place across the world, including London, in recent weeks attempting to draw attention to what is happening in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Right now is a very worrying time inside Iran\u2019 he continued. \u2018The social atmosphere is very intense.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s like a powder keg every day there are protests and anything can trigger a protest.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The only tool the regime has to be able to maintain power is suppression and, in particular, execution.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The western governments must put pressure on the regime to make it stop.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018Right now these days you can find multiple\u00a0protest in Tehran daily. Teachers, workers, this is of economic nature but a lot of it is political.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But all these protests what they seek is a regime change.
