{"id":21153,"date":"2016-09-22T01:34:17","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T00:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/human-rights\/21153-iran-portuguese-justice-official-supports-inquiry-into-1988-massacre"},"modified":"2023-01-16T17:44:14","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T16:44:14","slug":"iran-portuguese-justice-official-supports-inquiry-into-1988-massacre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/iran-portuguese-justice-official-supports-inquiry-into-1988-massacre\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran: Portuguese justice official supports inquiry into 1988 massacre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"ALMIDA\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46935\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/09\/ALMIDA.jpg\" alt=\"ALMIDA\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ALMIDA.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ALMIDA-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>NCRI &#8211;\u00a0<span>Ms. Maria C\u00e2ndida de Almeida, Deputy Attorney General of the Portuguese Supreme Court and former General Prosecutor,\u00a0<\/span>declared her support for the call by the Iranian Resistance&#8217;s President-elect Maryam Rajavi for an investigation into the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran and prosecution of its masterminds and perpetrators, according to a report on the website of the Women&#8217;s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).<\/p>\n<p>In her letter, Ms. Almeida <a href=\"http:\/\/women.ncr-iran.org\/iran-women-news\/3134-iran-portuguese-justice-official-supports-inquiry-into-1988-massacre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>: &#8220;As an expert in law and someone who has worked in the highest levels of the judicial system in my country, I am very shocked and also angry for the inaction and silence of the international community towards 30,000 men and women and even children who were unjustly executed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Almeida expressed her dismay over the fact that the incumbent Justice Minister under Rouhani was a member of the &#8220;Death Commission&#8221; in charge of issuing death sentences for the victims of the 1988 massacre. She urged the United Nations and the UN Security Council to launch an inquiry into the 1988 massacre in Iran and place its perpetrators before justice.<\/p>\n<p>Full text of the letter follows:<\/p>\n<p>On the anniversary of the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran, as an expert in law and someone who has worked in the highest levels of the judicial system in my country, I am very shocked and also angry for the inaction and silence of the international community towards 30,000 men and women and even children who were unjustly executed.<\/p>\n<p>It has come to my attention that the current Minister of Justice in Rouhani\u2019s government, was also a member of the three-man \u201cdeath commission\u201d in the 1988 massacre. Therefore, it isn\u2019t unjust to say that today, the mass executions still continue as we hear of group executions of 25 prisoners one day and other groups of 12 and 7 executed by the regime in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>In memory of all the fallen for freedom, all the 30,000 executed in the summer of 1988, I support Mrs. Maryam Rajavi\u2019s call for an inquiry on the massacre and ask the United Nations and UN Security Council to hold an inquiry and hope that the perpetrators will finally be brought to justice.<\/p>\n<p>Maria C\u00e2ndida de
