This election\u00a0farce\u00a0has become the deepest crisis of the mullahs&#8217; regime since the uprisings of November 2019 and January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Elections are an integral part of a democratic system, but in the clerical regime, elections equate to a power struggle within the regime and between the most loyalists of the regime for a greater share of power.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iranian?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iranian<\/a> regime\u2019s parliamentary elections will be held on Feb21, 2020. In the absence of freedom &amp;genuine opposition, the parliamentary elections in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> is another scene of the regime\u2019s infightings over-controlling and plundering the Iranian people\u2019s wealth.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeIran2020?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeIran2020<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1219541018070192128?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 21, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>To better understand how the mullahs&#8217; election is going to proceed and why this year&#8217;s election has triggered such a crisis for the regime, let&#8217;s first look at the regime&#8217;s election codes.<\/p>\n<p>Any candidate seeking to take part in parliamentary elections must meet at least 15 conditions. According to the regime\u2019s electoral law, two\u00a0of these\u00a0conditions are: \u201cPractical obligation to the Islamic revolution and the sacred state of the Islamic Republic of Iran,\u201d and \u201cPledging full allegiance to the constitution and the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/blog\/25834-khomeini-s-legacy-is-a-broken-iran-only-regime-change-can-fix%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Velayat<\/i><i>-e Faqih<\/i><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/blog\/25834-khomeini-s-legacy-is-a-broken-iran-only-regime-change-can-fix%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u202f<\/a>principle,\u201d referring to the\u00a0absolute rule of the\u00a0Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n<p>If any candidate does not accept the fascist and dictatorial\u202f<i>Velayat<\/i><i>-e Faqih\u202f<\/i>principle and is not fully loyal to the supreme leader,\u00a0they\u00a0will be disqualified. And even if\u00a0they\u00a0do accept this principle, this is just the first step, and the Guardian Council needs to confirm each candidate. A candidate, despite meeting these\u00a0two conditions, may still be disqualified. Based on an investigative analysis of a regime\u2019s expert at least 80\u00a0percent\u00a0of Iranian people lack the qualifications mentioned in the law. Therefore, in the clerical regime, the law is equivalent to dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>The 12-member\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/president-elect\/27345-khamenei-poised-to-purge-rival-faction-s-candidates?highlight=WyJndWFyZGlhbiIsImd1YXJkaWFuJ3MiLCInZ3VhcmRpYW4iLCJndWFyZGlhbiciLCJndWFyZGlhbicuIiwiY291bmNpbCIsImNvdW5jaWwncyIsImNvdW5jaWwnIiwiJ2NvdW5jaWwiLCJjb3VuY2lsJywiLCJjb3VuY2lsJ3NtZWV0aW5nIiwiZ3VhcmRpYW4gY291bmNpbCJd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guardian Council\u00a0<\/a>is comprised of six members directly appointed by the Supreme Leader. The six\u00a0remaining\u00a0members\u00a0are appointed by the head of the judiciary, who himself is appointed by the Supreme Leader, and need parliamentary confirmation. As a result, the Guardian Council is comprised of 12 individuals highly loyal to the Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the Guardian Council is the Supreme Leader\u2019s tool to specify which candidates of his preference can take part in the parliamentary and presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p>For the past 40 years, the clerical regime, by holding farce elections with\u00a0huge\u00a0rigging and\u00a0declaring\u00a0high turnout,\u00a0has controlled the various factions of the regime in\u00a0the\u00a0power struggle on the one hand, and on the other, by pretending that the authorities are elected by the people, has\u00a0obtained domestic and international legitimacy for\u00a0itself.<\/p>\n<p>This year, after the recent uprisings, the regime\u2019s condition has become so critical that it cannot even maintain the closest loyalists, and\u00a0Supreme Leader Ali\u00a0Khamenei intends to eliminate the other faction as much as he can and turn the parliament\u00a0into\u00a0a\u00a0one faction body. This has turned the issue of the farce election\u00a0into an unprecedented crisis for the regime.<\/p>\n<p>According to state-run media, the Guardian Council has disqualified 90 sitting members of the parliament, some of whom have\u00a0already\u00a0served three terms. Candidates in 170 districts are only from Khamenei\u2019s faction,\u00a0and the main candidates of the rival faction in other districts have been eliminated such that ultimately 260 seats will\u00a0automatically\u00a0go to the faction most aligned with Khamenei.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech on Wednesday, Khamenei presented his firm support for the Guardian Council, and it became clear that Khamenei intends to eliminate the other faction from the Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The regime\u2019s president, Hassan Rouhani, whose private consultations for his quota failed, described the election as &#8220;ceremonial&#8221; and\u00a0a\u00a0&#8220;selection process&#8221;\u00a0(instead of an election)\u00a0and criticized the Guardian Council. The opposing faction also targeted Rouhani,\u00a0pointing out\u00a0the current system is what\u00a0previously\u00a0ensured his\u00a0&#8220;election,&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0questioning\u00a0why he\u00a0had\u00a0praised the Guardian Council at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, a day after Khamenei&#8217;s speech, Ibrahim Raisi, the head of the regime&#8217;s judiciary, threatened Rouhani and said: &#8220;Anyone who questions the electoral process, whether wittingly or not, whether they want to or not, by weakening the election process, will be in the enemy&#8217;s front.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ebrahim Raisi Should Face Justice for Role in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/1988Massacre?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#1988Massacre<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TYbrQQIse8\">https:\/\/t.co\/TYbrQQIse8<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MT4XFZpjuL\">https:\/\/t.co\/MT4XFZpjuL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7nrxMPO4NJ\">pic.twitter.com\/7nrxMPO4NJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1121780970334687232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 26, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Immediately after Khamenei&#8217;s remarks, the media affiliated with both factions began attacking each other,\u00a0a saga\u00a0which\u00a0has\u00a0continued.<\/p>\n<p>The regime is now faced with a dilemma of dying or committing suicide. She said the complete purge of the rival faction\u2019s candidates is a clear sign of the ruling religious fascism\u2019s inevitable retrenchment in the face of the surging uprisings and the crisis of overthrow.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Fearing widespread boycott of sham election, today, Rouhani repeatedly implored the people to not stay away from the polls. As a patriotic duty,Iranians are determined to boycott this farce, as their bond with martyrs, especially the 1,500 martyrs of the Nov. 2019 uprising. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Maryam Rajavi (@Maryam_Rajavi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Maryam_Rajavi\/status\/1227190917452517376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mrs.\u00a0Rajavi\u202femphasized that the Iranian people have cast their true vote in the November 2019 and January 2020 uprisings with chants of \u201cdeath to the principle of the\u00a0velayat-e faqih, and death to Khamenei.\u201d They will boycott the mullahs\u2019 illegitimate election more than before. Boycotting this farce is a patriotic duty and the Iranian nation\u2019s pledge to the martyrs of the Iranian people, especially the 1,500 martyrs of the November uprising. It also reflects the demands of the January 2020 uprising of the people and students for the overthrow of the illegitimate ruling theocracy in its entirety.
