The conflation of lies, denials, and distortions, accompanied by bulldozers trying to plow up the evidence, was a vivid demonstration of the nature of a cruel and barbaric regime, unworthy of a great people and a great country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the nationwide Iran protests in November 2019, and the regime\u2019s terrorism, led\u00a0for\u00a0years by the now-dead IRGC Quds Force\u00a0chief,\u00a0Qasem\u00a0Soleimani, Lord Alton said: \u201cAs widespread demonstrations have shown, this is Iran\u2019s greatest existential crisis since 1979; it is a regime forced to kill hundreds of protestors and to\u00a0terrorize\u00a0thousands of others who show its true face. Khamenei and Soleimani are two sides of the same coin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast month I was in northern Iraq and Kurdistan, where I saw the Kurdish Regional Government attempting to build a pluralist and democratic society. That is endangered by a pincer movement of rekindled sleeping ISIS cells and by proxy\u00a0Shabak\u00a0militias funded by Iran. All over the region, Iran has\u00a0destabilized\u00a0countries, peddling a violent hateful ideology. Think of the consequences in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq. Since its foundation in 1979, the Iranian regime has been based on two pillars: domestic oppression and the export of terrorism and chaos abroad. Since 2018, Iranian-backed groups of militants have fired over 30 rockets at US facilities in Iraq, including the\u00a0US embassy\u00a0in Baghdad, the consulate in Basra and military training facilities in\u00a0Taji, Mosul, and Nineveh. Congress and the White House have repeatedly warned that this will not be tolerated forever,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to an article\u00a0in\u00a0the Daily Telegraph about the regime\u2019s\u00a0terrorism abroad,\u00a0Lord Alton asked the\u00a0UK\u00a0government:\u00a0\u201cI have two questions for the Minister. A report in the Daily Telegraph revealed that Soleimani\u2019s Quds force and Afghan mercenaries are secretly directing military operations in the north-west city of Idlib in Syria, despite a promise during peace talks not to attack that city. Could he give us his response to that, and to calls to proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Baroness Ashton of Upholland, former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-protests\/27135-100-lawmakers-urge-eu-s-chief-diplomat-to-press-for-halt-to-crackdown-on-iran-protests?highlight=WyJldXJvcGVhbiIsIidldXJvcGVhbiIsImV1cm9wZWFuJ3MiLCJwYXJsaWFtZW50IiwicGFybGlhbWVudCdzIiwicGFybGlhbWVudCdzZm9yZWlnbiIsInBhcmxpYW1lbnQnc2RlbGVnYXRpb24iLCJwYXJsaWFtZW50Jy4iLCIncGFybGlhbWVudCdzIiwicGFybGlhbWVudCciLCJwYXJsaWFtZW50J3NzZWN1cml0eSIsImV1cm9wZWFuIHBhcmxpYW1lbnQiXQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">European Union High\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-protests\/27135-100-lawmakers-urge-eu-s-chief-diplomat-to-press-for-halt-to-crackdown-on-iran-protests?highlight=WyJldXJvcGVhbiIsIidldXJvcGVhbiIsImV1cm9wZWFuJ3MiLCJwYXJsaWFtZW50IiwicGFybGlhbWVudCdzIiwicGFybGlhbWVudCdzZm9yZWlnbiIsInBhcmxpYW1lbnQnc2RlbGVnYXRpb24iLCJwYXJsaWFtZW50Jy4iLCIncGFybGlhbWVudCdzIiwicGFybGlhbWVudCciLCJwYXJsaWFtZW50J3NzZWN1cml0eSIsImV1cm9wZWFuIHBhcmxpYW1lbnQiXQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Representative<\/a>, also\u00a0spoke during the debate.\u00a0Referring to the\u00a02015 international\u00a0nuclear deal Baroness Ashton\u00a0said that\u00a0one of the criticisms to the\u00a0\u201cIranian nuclear agreement\u2014the JCPOA\u2014is that it deals only with the nuclear weapons issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-protests-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iran protests<\/a>\u00a0and the regime\u2019s deadly crackdown on protesters,\u00a0Lord Clarke\u00a0of Hampstead\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cWithin Iran, the oppression continues, and the recent protests have led to an all-too-familiar pattern of murders and mass arrests. Innocent people who have only freedom in mind\u2014freedom for democracy\u2014are being cruelly mown down. Once again, the protests were put down by the Revolutionary Guard and others. I pay tribute to those people who made such a stand to try to change things in their own country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the regime\u2019s President Hassan Rouhani\u2019s past and\u00a0his\u00a0role in crimes such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/20932-the-1988-massacre-in-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1988 massacre<\/a>\u00a0of 30,000 political prisoners,\u00a0mostly members, and supporters of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK)<\/a>,\u00a0Lord Clarke\u00a0said: \u201cWe have to learn from the mistakes. This is the Rouhani from the 1988 massacre; the Rouhani who told Iraq what to do about the people at\u00a0[Camp]\u00a0Ashraf and Camp Liberty. More recently, Iran\u2019s fingers have got involved in Albania, where some of those people resettled after getting out of Camp Liberty. I hope that the Minister is able to speak with a louder voice than we have heard from the Government in recent years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, the Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, represented the\u00a0UK\u00a0government. He\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cThe world must\u00a0recognize\u00a0and understand Iran\u2019s\u00a0destabilizing\u00a0influence in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the regime\u2019s malign activities in the region,\u00a0especially its attack on vessels in the Persian\u00a0Gulf,\u00a0the Minister of State said: \u201cFollowing Iran\u2019s attacks on shipping in the Gulf, we joined the International Maritime Security Construct to uphold freedom of navigation. We fully understand the desire of the United States to re-establish deterrence and the need to shift the strategic calculation for the Iranian leadership by increasing the costs of Iran\u2019s activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is worrying for someone who looks after the agenda of women, peace, and security to see the declining role of women within Iran and the suppression of women\u2019s rights. It is important that we bring this to the fore.
