This conference was attended by\u00a0the former Italian Foreign Minister Giulio\u00a0Terzi.\u00a0Federico\u00a0Mollicone,\u00a0Member of Parliament, Senator Roberto\u00a0Rampi, Member of the Senate Commission on Human Rights, Ms. Laura\u00a0Harth, Representative of the Italian\u00a0Nonviolent Radical Party Transnational\u00a0Transparty\u00a0at the United Nations, and Behzad\u00a0Bahar, a member of\u00a0the\u00a0Iranian\u00a0community in\u00a0Italy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elizamparutti?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@elizamparutti<\/a> president of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HandsOffCain_It?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HandsOffCain_It<\/a> said:<br \/>It&#39;s a shame <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eu_eeas?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@eu_eeas<\/a> high rep. Josep Borrell visited <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> &amp; pressed the hands of regime&#39;s officials despite latest <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranProtests?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranProtests<\/a> killings, arrests, torture &amp; crackdown on protesters. It seems EU has no interest in these issues. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/z7n1SYtA87\">pic.twitter.com\/z7n1SYtA87<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dowlat Nowrouzi (@DowlatNowrouzi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DowlatNowrouzi\/status\/1225427846035845120?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 6, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the meeting, Ms. Elisabetta Zamparutti, an official from Hands Off Cain, while referring to the visit of the High Representative of the European Union to Iran under the mullahs&#8217; regime, said: \u201cIt is a shame that the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, went to Iran and shook hand with the Iranian regime\u2019s officials, who\u2019s hands were crimson with the blood of massacred protesters in November. While Borrell was holding a press conference in Iran, news emerged that the Iranian regime was aware of the Ukrainian passenger jet downing. It is our duty to continue to expose the massacre of the Iranian people by the regime. While student protests continue in Iran, the regime continues its crackdown, and the EU seems to have no interest in these issues, and we know that adherence to human rights is the only way to cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next speaker at the meeting was Senator Roberto Rampi, a member of the Italian Senate Human Rights Commission. Senator Rampi said: &#8220;In recent days, important things have happened in Iran, from the regime\u2019s shooting down of the Ukrainian airliner, to its rocket attack on the US bases in Iraq and the students\u2019 protests and uprisings in Iran last month. Unfortunately, Europe wants to continue dialogue with this regime. And it still wants to continue its support for this bloodthirsty regime. We must tell them, loud and clear, that this approach is wrong&#8230;we must continue to work to establish democracy and freedom in Iran. Economic interests are important, but they cannot and should not be prioritized over human rights and security, and we must speak clearly to the European Union and call for a regime change in Iran. This change will be fulfilled by the Iranian people as well as its opponents, and we can call for an immediate regime change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another speaker\u00a0of\u00a0the meeting was\u00a0Renata\u00a0Polverini, the Italian\u00a0MP\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0former governor of Rome,\u00a0who said:\u00a0\u201cOur country and the European Union are only concerned about what is happening with the nuclear deal, they have forgotten the massacre of the Iranian people by the regime.<\/p>\n<p>Italian\u00a0Foreign Minister Di\u00a0Maio\u00a0continues to\u00a0ignore\u00a0these voices. Instead, we are here, along with\u00a0Giulio\u00a0Terzi\u00a0to emphasize our solidarity with the Iranian people and with the Iranian opposition, which continues to draw public attention to human rights abuses and freedoms in\u00a0Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another speaker at the conference was former Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, who said: &#8220;What does Borrell\u2019s visit to Iran represent? These gestures only legitimize the regime, despite the massacre and torture they have committed. Borrell has decided to go to Iran to find opportunities and solutions to the current crisis in the Middle East, but what is published in the press release and read is that Europe&#8217;s priority remains the nuclear agreement. The bureaucratic procedures adopted, which are supposed to do nothing, as the Iranian regime continues to violate the nuclear agreement. But are the ongoing repression in Iran and regime\u2019s meddling in other countries important to the EU?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GiulioTerzi?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GiulioTerzi<\/a>, ex Italian FM:<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JosepBorrellF?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JosepBorrellF<\/a>&#39;s visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> only legitimize massacre &amp; tortures committed by Mullahs regime as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eu_eeas?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@eu_eeas<\/a> priority is JCPOA which continues to be violated by the regime.<br \/>EU don&#39;t care about the ongoing suppression &amp; regime&#39;s intervene in Middle East <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SsP2daHCDW\">pic.twitter.com\/SsP2daHCDW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dowlat Nowrouzi (@DowlatNowrouzi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DowlatNowrouzi\/status\/1225445810424483841?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 6, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Terzi\u00a0continued: Who shall give us an explanation?\u00a0\u00a0Borrell replied that he was only interested in the nuclear deal and could not get into other issues and\u00a0forgot\u00a0all that was happening in Iran. And it is an institutionalized shame that justifies the totalitarianism of the mullahs\u2019\u00a0fascism. We have a call to the Italian institutions and to the\u00a0Foreign\u00a0Minister to\u00a0act\u00a0and take\u00a0the matter to the UN in New York and in Geneva.\u00a0There should be a\u00a0rapid response\u00a0in Italy and in Europe and around the world to reopen a commission of inquiry into the situation in Iran and to demand the release of political prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another speaker at the conference,\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Federico\u00a0Mollicone,\u00a0Italian MP,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cHuman rights should be a priority in international relations. After the US\u00a0cut its relationship with the regime, Iran wants to get closer to Europe, but we cannot pay the\u00a0ransom\u00a0for democratization in the guise of geopolitical interests.\u00a0Interests\u00a0that we cannot guarantee when our\u00a0negotiation parties\u00a0are undemocratic.\u00a0The regime executes\u00a0people, issues\u00a0death sentences,\u00a0oppresses people and has\u00a0established\u00a0a police state. We want\u00a0to remind\u00a0our Prime Minister and Foreign Minister\u00a0of\u00a0the importance of their role in\u00a0preventing\u00a0the human\u00a0rights abuses in Iran. They need to be able to respond quickly to the rights of the Iranian people, and the EU can play an important role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u00a0position\u00a0of\u00a0the press\u00a0on these issues is unacceptable,&#8221; said Mrs.\u00a0Laura\u00a0Harth, the representative\u00a0of\u00a0the Radical Party\u00a0at the UN.<\/p>\n<p>She added:\u00a0\u201cIn Iran, nothing is said about ethnic and religious minorities. The US State Department has imposed new sanctions. Documents and videos with 88,000 videos, photos, and messages from Iranian citizens about human rights abuses, torture, the situation in prisons and demonstrations. We must continue to hold such initiatives, hold a conference\u00a0in\u00a0these institutions and urge the European Union not to deny them. According to news from the United States, both Democrats and Republicans have adopted a resolution against human rights abuses in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last speaker at the conference was Behzad\u00a0Bahar, a member of\u00a0the\u00a0Iranian community\u00a0in Italy.\u00a0He said: \u201cDuring the Iran protests in November, the regime\u00a0killed 1,500 people, wounded 4,000 and arrested more than 12,000 demonstrators.\u00a0The regime\u2019s\u00a0brutality was condemned\u00a0by political\u00a0figures, parliamentarians, and a wide range of people around the world\u00a0who expressed their support\u00a0for the Iranian people&#8217;s struggle for freedom and democracy.\u00a0I\u00a0must recall the support of the US Congress\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Iran protests,\u00a0especially the House\u00a0Resolution 752, which received bipartisan support in Congress,\u00a0recognizing\u00a0the legitimate struggle of the Iranian people for freedom and democracy against this regime. At the same time, I would like to thank the Members of the Italian Senate and\u00a0Parliament\u00a0for their support\u00a0for\u00a0the Iranian people&#8217;s struggle for years and for the Iranian Resistance.\u00a0I also\u00a0urge them to pursue a similar initiative in the Italian Parliament as was the resolution of the US Congress.\u00a0I\u00a0call upon the Italian government to support the Iranian people&#8217;s struggle for freedom and democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"gtx-trans\">\n<div class=\"gtx-trans-icon\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February 5, 2020: A conference was held in the Italian Parliament, protesting the visit of the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, to Iran.
