{"id":212033,"date":"2020-02-05T23:12:44","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T23:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/?p=212033"},"modified":"2023-01-21T17:57:24","modified_gmt":"2023-01-21T16:57:24","slug":"why-is-iran-at-the-brink-of-downfall-this-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/why-is-iran-at-the-brink-of-downfall-this-february\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Is Iran at the Brink of Downfall This February?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Iranian Regime at the Brink of Downfall \" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Iranian_Regime_at_the_Brink_of_Downfall.jpg\" alt=\"Why Is Iran at the Brink of Downfall This February?\" \/><\/p>\n<p><small><strong>Iranian Regime at the Brink of Downfall<\/strong><\/small><\/p>\n<p>February is the month that every year the Iranian dictatorship utilizes to arrange rallies and shows to portray itself as a stable and influential regional power, in a bid to cover up its illegitimacy at home, which results in more international\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/economy\/27325-iran-regime-s-economic-suffocation-and-global-isolation\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">isolation<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This year, the situation at home and in the region is significantly different than at any other time.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the most loyal forces of the regime, active in Basij, as well as the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/26779-iran-s-regime-is-the-world-s-foremost-threat-to-peace-and-security\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IRGC forces,<\/a>\u00a0is reported to have distanced themselves from the regime and are reported to be in low spirits. The Iranian regime has lost its grip on what it calls Iran\u2019s \u201cstrategic debt.\u201d This is the use of Iraq and its proxy forces to export terrorism and extremism in Iraq and the region as one of its main pillars for power during the last few decades. In addition to this are the nationwide Iranian protests and the slogans which have called for the Supreme Leader and the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/26779-iran-s-regime-is-the-world-s-foremost-threat-to-peace-and-security\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)<\/a>\u00a0to go away.<\/p>\n<p>A quick look at the regime\u2019s political, social, and economic status in the past year is very revealing:<\/p>\n<p><strong>IRANIAN REGIME ISOLATED MORE THAN EVER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the U.S. departure from the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/27298-iran-s-regime-further-breaches-jcpoa-eu-must-adopt-a-firm-policy\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)<\/a>, the U.S. sanctions were reinstalled one after the other. In addition to the secondary sanctions, the U.S. Treasury Department has issued a new advisory to the Maritime Petroleum Shipping Community, literally blocking the Iranian regime\u2019s attempts to by-pass the sanctions, effectively canceling the Iranian regime\u2019s oil exports.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is being done, while the regime\u2019s president, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/EU?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#EU<\/a> initiated the dispute mechanism, fearfully pleaded that the regime is not seeking a nuclear bomb. A position which shows the regime\u2019s desperation and weakness.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranDeal?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranDeal<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeIran2020?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeIran2020<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/duBXCusB5v\">https:\/\/t.co\/duBXCusB5v<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1221857828882743296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 27, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It later expanded the sanctions to petrochemical products, the main source of income for the regime after oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p>On February 4th, 2019, following the Iranian regime\u2019s breach of the UN Security Council resolution 2231, and the testing of a ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons, the EU3 in a joint statement, unanimously adopted by the bloc\u2019s ambassadors, called on Tehran to put an \u201cimmediate end\u201d to its \u201cunacceptable behavior\u201d or risk destabilizing the region,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/global-europe\/news\/eu-condemns-irans-missile-launches-hostile-activities\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported EurActive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sm749\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">On July 31st, 2019<\/a>, the U.S. Treasury Department identified the Iranian regime&#8217;s foreign minister, Javad Zarif, for acting on behalf of the supreme leader of the Iranian regime. The designation brought further isolation for the regime.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the Iranian regime\u2019s lack of transparency in observing the international standards against money-laundering and terrorist financing (FATF), it failed to reach a practical agreement with the EU, in materializing the INSTEX mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>On September 4th, 2019,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-iran-nuclear-europe-trade\/no-trade-mechanism-until-iran-passes-terrorism-financing-laws-french-diplomat-idUSKCN1VP1MS\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters reported<\/a>: \u201cA European trade mechanism to barter humanitarian and food goods with Iran will not work until Tehran sets up a mirror company and meets international standards against money-laundering and terrorism financing, a French diplomatic source said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Iranian regime\u2019s Expediency Council, which is to decide whether to adopt the Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) legislation, a requirement for the FATF standards, announced that since the one-year deadline for this organization had expired on January 21st, the assignment of this bill related to the work of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/society\/27313-iran-regime-s-deadlock-over-elections-and-fatf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Financial Action Task Force (FATF)<\/a>\u00a0should be considered finished. The same deadlock applies to the Palermo Convention, the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.<\/p>\n<p>Joining the FATF and specifically adopting its main bills, the Palermo Convention and the CFT, are among those conditions that the regime is unable to accept, despite its dire economic situation. This will further isolate the already isolated regime.<\/p>\n<p>On January 5th, 2020, the Iranian regime announced it would\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/iran-fully-withdrawing-2015-nuclear-deal-amid-tensions-with-us-2020-1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no longer adhere to the 2015 nuclear deal<\/a>. The announcement was designed to bully the EU3 into adherence with the regime\u2019s conditions, providing a way out of the sanctions, while continuing its nuclear and missile program.<\/p>\n<p>The UK, France, and Germany took a step towards triggering the agreement&#8217;s dispute resolution mechanism, which opens the door for the imposition of UN sanctions on Iran. This move was considered to be the last step before the complete isolation of the Iranian dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>On December 19th, 2019, the<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-protests\/27111-200-european-lawmakers-support-iran-protests-endorse-maryam-rajavi-s-call-on-u-to-probe-protesters-deaths\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0European Parliament passed a resolution<\/a>\u00a0in support of the Iranian people\u2019s protests and condemned the regime\u2019s violent crackdown on protesters. The move showed Europe\u2019s support for the Iranian people\u2019s aspirations for freedom and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the United States Congress, approved a bipartisan resolution on the 28th of January 2020, supporting Iran protests and condemning the inhumane crackdown on protesters during the November uprising. The resolution also condemned the Iranian regime\u2019s terrorist plots against the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MEK<\/a>, Iran\u2019s main opposition organization. A move that very clearly signaled the Iranian regime\u2019s illegitimacy in the eyes of the country\u2019s Democrats and Republicans despite all the differences and disagreements among them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loss of Influence in the Region &#8211; Cutting the Arms of Terrorism Off In The Region<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/27175-who-was-the-vicious-criminal-qassem-soleimani\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Qassem Soleimani<\/a>, the second most important man in the Iranian regime and the chieftain of the terrorist\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/26763-quds-force-s-arm-in-iraq-holy-shrines-reconstruction-headquarters\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quds Force<\/a>, along with Abu Mehdi al-Muhandis, head of the Iranian regime\u2019s proxy forces in Iraq, were killed on January 3rd, 2020, delivering a major blow to the Iranian regime\u2019s terrorist apparatus in Iran, and in the region. Soleimani\u2019s death also had consequences within the regime\u2019s ranks, breaking the spirit of the regime\u2019s remaining loyal forces.<\/p>\n<p>Soleimani\u2019s death was the last in a series of blows to the regime\u2019s influence in the region, and certainly the biggest. The other blows that preceded Soleimani\u2019s death were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Iraqi uprising that started in October 2019, and has spread all over Iraq, continues to grow daily, demanding the entire government and the parliament that are under the influence of the Iranian regime, to go away. The significance of this uprising is that its main drive was initially the Shiite Iraqi youth that the Iranian regime has invested in a lot to secure its dominance, but it has now passed an irreversible point. The brave Iraqi protesters have already forced the pro-regime Prime Minister, Adil Abdul-Mahdi, to resign. The demonstrators, who are fed up with the decade and a half long reign of terror led by Iran backed militias and pro-regime officials, are now demanding the eviction of the Iranian regime and all the officials and proxies of the regime from Iraq.<\/li>\n<li>Muqtada al-Sadr, the pro-Iranian regime Shiite cleric, who tried to divert the protest in various ways, failed. His last attempt, during the recent counter-demonstration on January 21st, was rejected by Iraqi protesters, isolating him and the pro-regime militias even further.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/statement-president-designation-islamic-revolutionary-guard-corps-foreign-terrorist-organization\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The blacklisting<\/a>\u00a0of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a \u201cForeign Terrorist Organization,\u201d including its Qud\u2019s force and all its commanders, was announced by the United States.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefings-statements\/statement-president-designation-islamic-revolutionary-guard-corps-foreign-terrorist-organization\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The White House<\/a>, in its briefing statement, announced:\u00a0<em>\u201cThis unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognizes the reality that Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft. The IRGC is the Iranian government\u2019s primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>the designation will be the first time that the United States has ever named a part of another government as an FTO.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>After blacklisting by the U.S., Jafari, the then chief commander of the IRGC, resigned and many commanders and members of IRGC distanced themselves from the Iranian regime.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi40aH8l7bnAhXF7eAKHUQgAIkQFjAAegQIAxAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Farticle%2Fus-albania-iran-expulsion%2Falbania-expels-iranian-diplomats-on-national-security-grounds-idUSKCN1OI2R7&amp;usg=AOvVaw0ZAs03pcXVDMZtQEJqNXeJ\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Following the December 19<\/a>th, 2018, expulsion of the Iranian regime\u2019s Ambassador and his deputy from Albania for their role in plotting terrorist activities against\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MEK<\/a>, (now having a major base in Albania called Ashraf-3), the Albanian government, expelled two more senior \u201cdiplomats\u201d of the regime from Albania, for \u201cactivity incompatible with their diplomatic status, a phrase often used in cases of spying\u201d reported Reuters on January 15th, 2020.<\/li>\n<li>The Albanian government further shut down the Iranian regime\u2019s \u201cSaadi\u201d cultural center in Tirana. This so-called cultural center was the regime\u2019s center for the export of extremism and the recruitment of terrorists.<\/li>\n<li>Since the Iranian regime has been conducting similar activities in other countries around the world, there were similar actions taken by authorities in the U.S., and Germany during the last year. i.e.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Two Iranian spies were arrested and convicted on a charge of spying on\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MEK\u00a0<\/a>members in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>Another terrorist center of the Iran regime was shut down in Germany. It acted as the educational center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Iranian Rial is Worth Much Less than it was Last Year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due to sanctions that have prevented the sale of oil and petrochemical products, a very corrupt system that systematically plunders large chunks of the country\u2019s budget by the ruling mullahs and their families, the regime is facing a bankrupt economy with no solutions going forward.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>\u2019s petrochemical and petroleum sectors are primary sources of funding for the Iranian regime\u2019s global <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/terrorist?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#terrorist<\/a> activities and enable its persistent use of violence against its own people,\u201dsaid U.S. Secretary of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USTreasury?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@USTreasury<\/a> Steven Mnuchin.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevenmnuchin1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@stevenmnuchin1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranRegimeChange?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranRegimeChange<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1220476866945015813?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This is while most of the country\u2019s budget is spent on developing nuclear and missile weapon programs, or on funding terrorists and proxies of the regime in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Hezbollah in Lebanon, etc. and in domestic repression.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, on every occasion, the Iranian people took to the streets to express their outrage at the unbearable living conditions of over 80 percent of the population who are living below the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/society\/26830-daily-increase-of-poverty-and-anger-of-iranian-people\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poverty\u00a0<\/a>line.<\/p>\n<p>While an analysis of the Iranian regime\u2019s economic downfall requires a separate report, it\u2019s worth noting that Iran has never been in such a situation before and on the brink of economic collapse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Essential Threat and What the Mullahs Fear The Most<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those who follow events in Iran closely do not doubt that this regime is on the brink of its downfall. It\u2019s only a question of what will ignite the outraged public and when.<\/p>\n<p>The dying economy and the unprecedented isolation of the Iranian regime, its recent ongoing failures in expanding its religious extremism beyond Iran\u2019s borders, and the recent blows to its terror machine in Iraq and beyond, are heavy blows to the unstable regime. What must be taken into account for anyone to understand the politics in Iran, is the fact that the main ongoing fight is not between Iran and other nations, but between the ruling mullahs and the overwhelming majority of the Iranian people who have shown time and again that they do not want this regime and who care for nothing less than regime change for freedom and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>This is the most important aspect of any analysis of the situation in Iran. What has changed dramatically this February compared to the last is that the nation\u2019s people have repeatedly and continuously taken to the streets, completely defying the ruling dictatorship. This can well be seen in the recent university students\u2019 protests in the aftermath of the inhumane downing of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/editorial\/27299-editorial-mysteries-behind-the-ukrainian-passenger-plane-downing-and-endless-lies-by-iran-s-regime\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ukrainian airliner<\/a>, killing 176 innocent people, and the regime\u2019s lack of transparency in what happened. The protesters attacked the heart of the regime with slogans, such as: \u201cSo many years of crimes, Death to the Supreme Leader,\u201d \u201cCommander-in-Chief, resign, resign,\u201d \u201cWe did not give martyrs to compromise and praise the murderous leader,\u201d \u201cDeath to the dictator,\u201d \u201cKhamenei is a murderer, his rule is null and void,\u201d and \u201cKhamenei, hear us, we are the people, not thugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the slogans are targeted at the IRGC, the main force behind the repression in Iran. Many are shouting: \u201cWe do not want the Shah or the Leader (Khamenei), we do not want the bad or the worse\u201d, clearly expressing their aspirations for a free democratic Iran.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A large crowd of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranProtesters?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranProtesters<\/a> join the students from Amir Kabir University in detesting the tyrants, be it the Shah (the previous tyrant) or the current Supreme Leader, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Khamenei?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Khamenei<\/a>. January 11, 2020, Hafez Street (AmirKabir Univ)<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranProtests?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranProtests<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeIran2020?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeIran2020<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bqtVNenTVa\">pic.twitter.com\/bqtVNenTVa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1217916340343844871?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The fact that the society is fed up with the ruling elite is what the mullahs fear the most and, more importantly, its support and allegiance to the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MEK\u00a0<\/a>resistance units which have been based on the regime\u2019s admittance mobilizing the protests around the country. This is what the Iranian regime fears most and why the terrible political, social and economic parameters point to the direction of regime change in Iran more than any other time before.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a message in this for the world\u2019s powers, particularly those European countries that are still prioritizing their short-term economic interests over the morals and humanitarian values that the EU stands for.
