EU must ensure that they are on the right side of history<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeIran2020?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeIran2020<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranProtests?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranProtests<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XFyoWMywkQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/XFyoWMywkQ<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UPI?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@upi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; STRUAN (@STRUANSTEVENSON) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/STRUANSTEVENSON\/status\/1224629030869139462?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 4, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-protests-2019\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0nationwide uprising last November<\/a>\u00a0that saw millions of mostly young Iranians take to the streets of cities, towns and villages across Iran has temporarily subsided. Sporadic outbursts of protest still take place, as thousands mourn their family members, murdered by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, the fascist regime&#8217;s Gestapo, during their ruthless crackdown on the uprising,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the regime\u2019s\u00a0deadly crackdown on protesters\u00a0and its ongoing\u00a0inhumane treatment of the arrested protesters, Mr. Stevenson wrote:\u00a0\u201cThousands more were wounded and dragged from their hospital beds by the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/26746-widespread-presence-of-iranian-regime-s-irgc-quds-force-in-iraq-under-diplomatic-cover\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IRGC\u00a0<\/a>to join the estimated 20,000 imprisoned for taking part in the riots. Daily reports of prisoners being denied medical attention and dying under torture leak from behind the regime&#8217;s grim prison walls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While referring to the regime\u2019s increasing\u00a0infighting as\u00a0the regime reaches its end, Mr. Stevenson wrote:\u00a0\u201cRecognizing that their days are numbered, the infighting between various\u00a0factions of the ruling elite has intensified. Desperate to cling to power, the\u00a0mullahs, who have stolen the Iranian people&#8217;s wealth, wrecked the economy,\u00a0spread murder and mayhem across the Middle East and brutalized their own\u00a0population, are engaged in a blame game, accusing each other of causing the\u00a0crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the regime\u2019s crime,\u00a0and\u00a0especially\u00a0the responsibility of\u00a0its supreme leader Ali Khamenei and\u00a0president\u00a0Hassan Rouhani,\u00a0in shooting down a Ukrainian passenger jet and killing all the innocent passengers aboard,\u00a0Mr. Stevenson wrote:\u00a0\u201cThe psychotic supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who for three days lied about the shooting down of the Ukrainian jetliner with 176 people on board, has ordered his Guardian Council, which supervises elections, to turn its fire on supporters of Hassan Rouhani, the Iranian president. Although the Western media has often portrayed Rouhani as a so-called \u2018moderate,\u2019 he is anything but.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to Rouhani\u2019s dark record, particularly over 4,000 executions during his tenure,\u00a0Mr. Stevenson wrote:\u00a0\u201cSince Rouhani took office in 2013, he has presided over the execution of more than 4,000 people, many of them political prisoners, including numerous women and even children. Iran is the world&#8217;s leading per capita executioner under Rouhani&#8217;s \u2018moderate\u2019 presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his article on UPI, Mr. Stevenson also spoke about how Rouhani\u00a0gave top positions of his government\u00a0to the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, mostly members and supporters of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK)<\/a>. He wrote: \u201cHe even appointed Alireza\u00a0Avaie\u00a0as his justice minister.\u00a0Avaie\u00a0is a listed terrorist in the West and is notorious for his role as a key executioner of political prisoners during a massacre in 1988, when over 30,000 supporters\u00a0of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peoples&#8217; Mojahedin of Iran\/Mojahedin e-Khalq (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a>\u00a0opposition movement were hanged, in batches of over 150 each day, on the orders of Iran&#8217;s then supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the regime\u2019s\u00a0crises vis-\u00e0-vis its upcoming\u00a0parliamentary elections and\u00a0the public boycott, Mr. Stevenson wrote:\u00a0\u201cThe Guardian Council, on the orders of Ali Khamenei, has disqualified 90 members of the regime&#8217;s current parliament from standing for re-election in the forthcoming parliamentary contest. This has enraged Rouhani and his followers who are trying to carve out a larger slice of Iran&#8217;s dwindling cake for themselves and their cronies. It is reminiscent of the vicious territorial wars fought between the powerful Sicilian Mafia families in the 1980s, and it is a sure sign that the teetering regime is on its last legs. Rouhani&#8217;s threat to distort the election result by using his Interior Ministry&#8217;s control of the process to stuff ballot boxes, may create the very spark that ignites the downfall of this gangster government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his article,\u00a0Mr. Stevenson also referred to the regime\u2019s failed\u00a0foreign policy and the end of the era of appeasement.\u00a0Mr. Stevenson also referred\u00a0to the recent interview of the regime\u2019s foreign minister, Mohammad\u00a0Javad\u00a0Zarif with\u00a0Der\u00a0Spiegel,\u00a0during which he said that the regime is ready to negotiate with the United States,\u00a0even after\u00a0the\u00a0killing of the regime\u2019s<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/26763-quds-force-s-arm-in-iraq-holy-shrines-reconstruction-headquarters\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Revolutionary Guards (IRGC)\u00a0<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/26763-quds-force-s-arm-in-iraq-holy-shrines-reconstruction-headquarters\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quds Force<\/a>\u00a0chief\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/terrorism-fundamentalism\/27175-who-was-the-vicious-criminal-qassem-soleimani\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Qassem Soleimani<\/a>\u00a0by the U.S. forces on January 3. He wrote: \u201cMeanwhile, diplomatic efforts to avert the regime&#8217;s imminent collapse are accelerating. With their economy in freefall, Iran&#8217;s foreign minister, Mohamad\u00a0Javad\u00a0Zarif, has given the clearest evidence yet of the mullahs&#8217; weakness, by telling Der Spiegel that even after the elimination of Iran&#8217;s top terrorist, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, his country is still willing to negotiate with the Americans, provided they immediately remove economic sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis humiliating climbdown by Zarif has caused outrage from some of the opposing factions in Tehran, with\u00a0Mojtaba\u00a0Zolnouri, head of the Iranian parliament&#8217;s national security commission asking why his government was begging for concessions from America after it had assassinated their homicidal hero Soleimani. Another incensed MP Amir Hossein\u00a0Ghazizadeh\u00a0Hashemi\u00a0asked: &#8216;Which country&#8217;s foreign minister are you, Mr. Zarif? Which nation? Which government? This nation wants revenge on the killers of Haj Qassem &#8230; don&#8217;t you have modesty?!&#8217;\u201d\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n<p>Calling\u00a0upon the European countries to end the appeasement policy\u00a0toward\u00a0the regime and adopt a firm policy, Mr. Stevenson wrote: \u201cIt is time the European Union followed America&#8217;s example. The twin pillars that have propped up the Iranian regime are violent oppression at home and the export of terror abroad. Those pillars are crumbling. The EU should echo America&#8217;s call of support for the Iranian people. A new revolution is coming, and the brave\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PMOI\/MEK<\/a>\u00a0resistance units who planned and abetted the recent uprising are preparing the ground for the theocratic regime&#8217;s overthrow. The\u00a0EU must\u00a0ensure that they are on the right side of history.
