{"id":212249,"date":"2020-01-31T19:00:05","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T19:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/?p=212249"},"modified":"2023-01-21T20:28:06","modified_gmt":"2023-01-21T19:28:06","slug":"u-s-slaps-new-sanctions-on-iran-regimes-atomic-energy-agency-and-its-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/u-s-slaps-new-sanctions-on-iran-regimes-atomic-energy-agency-and-its-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Slaps New Sanctions on Iran Regime\u2019s Atomic Energy Agency and Its Chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"United States State Department, in coordination with the Treasury Department, slapped new sanctions on the Iranian regime\u2019s Atomic Energy Organization and its chief Ali-Akbar Salehi. \" src=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/US_Slaps_New_Sanctions_on_Iran_Regimes_Atomic_Energy_Agency_and_Its_Chief.jpg\" alt=\"U.S. Slaps New Sanctions on Iran Regime\u2019s Atomic Energy Agency and Its Chief \" \/><\/p>\n<p><small><strong>United States State Department, in coordination with the Treasury Department, slapped new sanctions on the Iranian regime\u2019s Atomic Energy Organization and its chief Ali-Akbar Salehi.<\/strong><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Written by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/component\/contact\/contact\/6?Itemid=490\">Shahriar Kia<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a031 January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday,\u00a0the United States State Department, in coordination with the Treasury Department,\u00a0slapped new sanctions\u00a0on\u00a0the Iranian regime\u2019s Atomic Energy Organization and its chief\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/26526-iran-regime-says-it-has-enriched-24-tons-of-uranium-in-defiance-of-nuclear-deal?highlight=WyJzYWxlaGkiLCJzYWxlaGkncyIsIm51Y2xlYXIiLCInbnVjbGVhciIsIidudWNsZWFyJyJd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ali-Akbar Salehi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Hook, the U.S. special\u00a0envoy\u00a0for Iran,\u00a0announced the new measures\u00a0during the State Department\u2019s daily press briefing on January 30<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Atomic Energy Organization of Iran has played a big role in Iran breaching its key nuclear commitments.\u00a0 It has exceeded the limits on its uranium stockpile and enrichment levels.\u00a0 The head of AEOI personally inaugurated the installation of new, advanced centrifuges to expand its uranium enrichment capacity.\u00a0 He also chaired a ceremony when Iran started injecting uranium gas into advanced IR-6 centrifuge machines,\u201d said Ambassador Hook.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, Special Representative for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> Brian Hook delivered remarks. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JZmZgmdJP8\">pic.twitter.com\/JZmZgmdJP8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Department of State (@StateDept) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StateDept\/status\/1222924967756607496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 30, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Citing the regime\u2019s\u00a0institutionalized terrorism\u00a0and its non-compliance with\u00a0the\u00a02015 international\u00a0nuclear agreement, formerly known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/nuclear\/27298-iran-s-regime-further-breaches-jcpoa-eu-must-adopt-a-firm-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)<\/a>, Ambassador Hook said:\u00a0\u201cIran\u2019s continued nuclear escalation underscores the serious challenge the Iranian regime poses to international peace and security.\u00a0 We call on nations to oppose Iran\u2019s nuclear extortion and to restore the United Nations Security Council standard of no enrichment for the Iranian regime.\u00a0 That standard was abandoned under the Iran nuclear deal and it needs to be restored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While referring to the regime\u2019s\u00a0economic corruption and its misuse of national wealth to export terrorism instead\u00a0of\u00a0helping the Iranian people,\u00a0Ambassador Hook said:\u00a0\u201cA big part of our Iran strategy from the very beginning is standing with the Iranian people instead of standing with the regime.\u00a0 The Iranian regime\u2019s corruption and economic mismanagement frequently diverts resources away from the Iranian people so it can finance warfare in the gray zone.\u00a0 The victims are the Iranian people who don\u2019t have sufficient access at times to medicines and medical devices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, citing the regime\u2019s malign behavior and its violation of the \u201cspirit\u201d of the agreement.
