Iran: Mullahs Regime\u2019s Deadlock Over Elections and FATF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

As the Iranian regime\u2019s downfall becomes definite and within reach, infighting between the regime\u2019s rival factions over prolonging the regime\u2019s life accelerates. Each faction describes its own way as a breakthrough for the regime\u2019s constant crises, accusing the other faction of leading the system to its downfall.<\/p>\n

The regime\u00a0has\u00a0two other devastating crises. One is the Parliamentary election and the\u00a0adoption of the\u00a0Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT)\u00a0legislation,\u00a0related to the work of the\u00a0Financial Action Task Force (FATF)<\/a>, which\u00a0the\u00a0regime needs to access the\u00a0world\u2019s banking system.<\/p>\n

#Iran<\/a>\u2019s Regime and Its Deadlock in Adopting the CFT https:\/\/t.co\/IoZ4j3UT0w<\/a>#FreeIran2020<\/a>#IranProtests<\/a><\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s Guardian Council\u00a0supervises elections and candidates. This\u00a0Council is directly under the\u00a0control of the\u00a0regime\u2019s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.\u00a0Therefore, the\u00a0Council\u00a0has\u00a0disqualified over 90 members of the regime\u2019s current parliament, and they cannot run as candidates in the next election. Most of these disqualified\u00a0candidates are from the\u00a0rival faction, close to\u00a0the\u00a0regime\u2019s president,\u00a0Hassan Rouhani.<\/p>\n

This is an attempt by Khamenei to unify\u00a0his regime.<\/p>\n

This has enraged Rouhani and its faction, since they are endeavoring for more share of power. On the other\u00a0hand,\u00a0it\u00a0has\u00a0terrified them,\u00a0because the regime\u2019s\u00a0infightings will ultimately pave the way for more protests; and the nationwide Iran protests in November have\u00a0proven that the Iranian people won\u2019t relent until they successfully topple the regime.<\/p>\n

Rouhani also referred to the\u00a0four-decade-long\u00a0electoral engineering by the regime and\u00a0added that\u00a0he will not let the rival faction do this and will prevent it\u00a0in favor if his own faction\u00a0through his\u00a0Interior Ministry that will control ballot boxes and will gather votes.\u00a0He said:\u00a0\u201cWe must be aware. Many elections face problems in the vote-count process\u2026\u201d\u00a0This was a clear message to\u00a0the\u00a0regime\u2019s supreme leader that Rouhani and his faction want more share of power.<\/p>\n

Rouhani, at the\u00a0conference of governors gathered from across the country,\u00a0begged for more share of power and said\u00a0to the rival faction that\u00a0\u201cNobody is above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLest the election becomes a formality and turns into a selection rather than election,\u201d\u00a0he added.\u00a0The regime is already terrified of what it calls the lowest percentage of participation in the election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIncidents of December 2017 emboldened Trump to stand against us and encouraged our enemies,\u201d he added, in reference to the first set of major Iran protests. \u201cWe must not forget that we should be friends in need. Let\u2019s be united on the election day,\u201d he\u00a0said, indirectly\u00a0addressing\u00a0Khamenei.\u00a0His remarks once again confirm that their priority is\u00a0not the Iranian people\u2019s rights\u00a0and improving their living conditions. It is rather a race\u00a0to have more share of power and to prolong\u00a0the\u00a0regime\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

FATF Deadlock<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition to the elections,\u00a0the regime has another political deadlock that has intensified its infightings. This is adopting the FATF, particularly the CFT legislation.<\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s Expediency Council has not yet declared its decision over whether to adopt the CFT legislation.\u00a0The\u00a0one-year deadline for this organization expired on January 21.<\/p>\n

Joining the FATF &adopting its main bills, the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime(Palermo Conv.)& Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT), are among those conditions that regime is not able to accept, despite its dire economic situation.https:\/\/t.co\/4LWtpAklhd<\/a><\/p>\n
