The rival faction, or the so-called \u201creformist\u201d faction, with the regime\u2019s current president Hassan Rouhani as its head, despite its active role in\u00a0 domestic repression and export of terrorism, yet under the pretext of moderation tries to attract the middle class\u2019s vote, to gain a greater share of power for itself.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">3)Iranian people are not deceived by the mirage of \u201creformists-hardliners inside the regime\u201d&amp;they are seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IranRegimeChange?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IranRegimeChange<\/a> in its entirety &amp;their road model is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MEK?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MEK<\/a>\u2019s resistance units which have been torching symbols of the regime 4the past two years.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ktw8oBpbY8\">https:\/\/t.co\/ktw8oBpbY8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NCRI-FAC (@iran_policy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy\/status\/1200786540743528449?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 30, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>With the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/iran-protests-2019\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nationwide Iran protests<\/a>\u00a0in 2017-18\u00a0and November 2019, Khamenei\u2019s faction lost the support of its traditional social class, the poor, especially those living in suburbs. Rouhani\u2019s faction, due to its active role in all the regime\u2019s crimes,\u00a0was\u00a0totally rejected by the Iranian people. People\u2019s slogan, \u201cReformist, hardliner, the game is over\u201d demonstrated this truth. Therefore, both factions\u2019 estimate much lower public presence in parliamentary elections\u00a0this year in comparison to previous years; which is their deepest concern. They truly fear a general boycott of elections,\u00a0and\u00a0they need to increase election fraud and fabricating votes.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates were registered within\u00a0six\u00a0days from December\u00a01,\u00a02019 to December\u00a07. According to the regime\u2019s laws, candidates will be qualified in two stages. The first phase was launched by the Interior Ministry&#8217;s executive committees on December 7 and ended on December 17. The second phase of eligibility review by the Guardian Council began on December 23 and is expected to be announced to candidates by January 21.<\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a016033 candidates are running for the elections.\u00a0Some\u00a088% of registered candidates are male and 12% are female.\u00a0Of the total number of candidates,\u00a04101 candidates\u00a0had\u00a0participated in the Iran-Iraq War, 90 are military personnel and 680 are clerics.<\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a0633 candidates are former members of parliament, of which 248 are in the current parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In the first round of qualification by the Executive Board, 1326 candidates were disqualified.\u00a0Another\u00a01447 candidates announced their withdrawal. Altogether, a\u00a0total of 46% of the candidates were disqualified (5346). According to media reports, the fate of 3048 candidates is not clear until January 21.<\/p>\n<p>The most important criteria for disqualification are &#8220;non-compliance with Islam&#8221;, &#8220;non-compliance with the constitution&#8221;,\u00a0and\u00a0&#8220;non-compliance with the absolute rule of the clergy (Supreme Leader)&#8221;. According to these rules, the candidate should not have any record of security conviction, shouldn\u2019t be\u00a0a\u00a0member of any opposition group or the regime\u2019s dissidents.<\/p>\n<p>So far, most of the disqualified candidates are from the so-called \u201creformist\u201d faction; but there are several conservative candidates among them, including 90 members of the current parliament who had been approved by the same Guardian Council four years ago. Of those 90,\u00a0some\u00a060 were reformists and 23 were members of the Larijani-affiliated faction, with a few being disqualified because of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian Council may, by its discretion, qualify or disqualify candidates up until election day. The Council does not publicly state the reasons for disqualification but informs the disqualified person him\u00a0or herself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Statistics indicate we have an unprecedented disqualification in the election in the history of Islamic Republic,&#8221; the state-run\u00a0Etemad\u00a0newspaper\u00a0wrote\u00a0on January 13.<\/p>\n<p>This level of disqualification reflects the depth of the regime&#8217;s emerging crises. While the regime desperately claims and yet needs absolute unity, it\u00a0has no response to these crises.
