Professor Sheehan’s Article on the Fow News<\/strong><\/small><\/p>\n

In\u00a0an article published on\u00a0<\/a>the\u00a0<\/a>Fox News website<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday, Prof. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, the Executive Director of the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Baltimore, explored the new wave of the\u00a0Iran protests\u00a0<\/a>following the regime\u2019s\u00a0downing of the Ukrainian passenger jet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran\u2019s domestic activists have made international headlines on a number of occasions in recent years. Global media reported on the latest protests, which emerged this past weekend in the wake of the regime\u2019s admission that it shot down a passenger airliner amidst heightened tensions with the United States. But what many reports miss is the fact that these protests quickly took on a more anti-government tone, thus underlining the stark divisions between the Iranian people and the country\u2019s ruling theocracy,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this way, the latest protests fit into a much larger pattern. Public demonstrations in the Islamic Republic seldom remain focused on the specific issues that spark them precisely because Iranians understand that the root of their problems is the regime that governs them,\u201d Prof. Sheehan added.<\/p>\n

While referring to the nationwide Iran protests in November, Prof. Sheehan wrote, \u201cNovember\u2019s anti-regime protests shook the regime to its core and changed the domestic political landscape. Not only did the protests quickly engulf the country, but they gave rise to slogans such as \u2018Death to the dictator,\u2019 thereby leaving little doubt about the public\u2019s appetite for regime change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to the regime\u2019s brutal crackdown on protesters on one side and the leading role played by the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK) during the November protests,\u00a0Prof. Sheehan wrote:\u00a0\u201cAuthorities promptly initiated one of the worst crackdowns in years for a nation that has been defined by reflexive political violence since the time of the Iranian Revolution. With the\u00a0Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK)\u00a0<\/a>opposition movement\u2019s resistance units spearheading at least 790 individual protests across 190 cities, security forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps opened fire with live ammunition, killing an estimated 1,500 people. Regime officials have yet to offer alternative casualty figures or account for the violence visited on protestors.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his article, Prof. Sheehan also explored the downing of the passenger jet by the regime and wrote:\u00a0\u201cWere this insufficient to shatter the government\u2019s credibility, Tehran\u2019s response to the Ukrainian Airlines tragedy most certainly did. For several days after the January 8 crash, senior Iranian officials insisted that the crash resulted from technical problems. Rouhani\u2019s\u00a0mea\u00a0culpa came only after irrefutable evidence of a missile strike had reached the public and the regime\u2019s denials had been rendered not only false but patently absurd,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe downing of Ukraine Airlines Flight 752 underscores the regime\u2019s inherent dishonesty, its refusal to take responsibility for even its most egregious decisions, and its general disregard for ordinary people inside Iran\u2019s territory \u2013 both its own people, as well as citizens of the world,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe international community should never mistake broad anti-government sentiment for something more narrowly-focused, nor conclude that the discontent on the Iranian street has evaporated simply because unrest has been quelled by suppressive forces,\u201d said Prof. Sheehan.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaryam Rajavi<\/a>, the President of\u00a0the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a>, predicted that anti-government sentiment would come back to the fore after a prior\u00a0nationwide uprising<\/a>\u00a0at the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018,\u201d Read Prof. Sheehan\u2019s article.

In his article on Fox News, Prof Sheehan pointed to several key takeaways from the resumption of anti-regime protests by thousands of Iranians in Tehran and other cities in 9 provinces since Saturday, which are as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are chanting slogans like \u2018Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, resign, resign,\u2019 or \u2018IRGC commits crime, the supreme leader supports it,\u2019 this time taking great risk and challenging the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, directly,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe protesters are openly blaming and challenging the IRGC, the regime\u2019s power base for decades. This reflects a new phase of increased defiance in Iran,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent days, people are chanting \u2018No to the oppressor, be it the Shah, or the supreme leader,\u2019 drawing a line with the past and the present and looking to a democratic future,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMonths of protests served to undermine the regime\u2019s propaganda following the killing of\u00a0Qassem Soleimani<\/a>. In Tehran and other cities, protesters promptly tore down Soleimani\u2019s posters \u2013 a sign of solidarity with the U.S. defensive measure. They also chanted \u201cSoleimani\u00a0<\/a>is a murderer, so is his leader (Ali Khamenei),\u201d
