NCRI – The President of the Swedish branch of Lawyers Without Borders and an expert on European Law, Kenneth Lewis, called on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to put pressure on Iraqi government to reaffirm the political refugee status of the People’s Mojahedin members in Ashraf City, Iraq.<\/p>\n
Mr. Lewis told reporters in a Geneva conference: “I have come to Geneva to participate in a conference which is dealing with the problem of establishing a clear refugee status for the PMOI members who are in Ashraf.” <\/p>\n
“You may well know that there have been a whole series of attacks against Ashraf, for instance on its water system and even on persons in Ashraf carried out probably by agents of the Iranian regime.”<\/p>\n
The European Law expert added: “In our opinion, it is quite clear that 4000 members of the PMOI who are in Iraq, were given political refugee status under the previous regime and that the present regime is obliged to acknowledge this fact. In any case they are protected under the Fourth Geneva Convention as none combatants and the allied forces in Iraq are also duty bound to protect them. And we are concerned about the fact that this protection has not been adequate.”<\/p>\n
Mr. Lewis expressed hope that “the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will also put pressure on the Iraqi government to acknowledge the refugee status of the PMOI in Ashraf.” <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
