Iran Human Rights Monitor Monthly Report \u2013 February 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

February was marked by the outbreak of the Coronavirus (Covid-19)<\/a> in Iran, progressively spreading throughout the country<\/span>, and the regime\u2019s deliberate inaction,\u00a0<\/span>says a leading Iranian human rights group.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

I<\/span>n its\u00a0<\/span>monthly report<\/span>\u00a0of February<\/span><\/a>,<\/a> Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM)\u00a0<\/span>mainly focused on the Coronavirus outbreak in Iran,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s cover-up and inaction in this regard and the extent of the crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Since the outset, the Iranian regime disseminated false information in a bid to cover up the scope of the outbreak. It did not take preemptive measures or distribute adequate medical supplies to the public. The regime also continued its flights back and forth to China. In this way, the regime contributed to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus\u00a0<\/span>all across<\/span>\u00a0the country and the rising numbers of victims, as well as the transmission of the disease to neighboring countries<\/span>,\u201d read the report.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a> announced on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, that as of 8:00 pm local time, the death toll nationwide from\u00a0<\/span>the Coronavirus had exceeded 1,200<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Referring to the regime\u2019s criminal downplaying\u00a0<\/span>of the Coronavirus outbreak and its casualties<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Iran HRM wrote:\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>There is no accurate assessment of the scope of the outbreak and the actual numbers of victims of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Iran since the regime\u2019s officials have deliberately tried to minimize the scope of the catastrophe. Local reports from various provinces, however, indicate that the virus has spread\u00a0<\/span>widely<\/span>\u00a0and people are increasingly concerned<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The official figures announced on since February 26 saw a steep rise. The rate of increase has been 100 persons per day. The official figure rose from 140 to 388 on February 28 within only two days.\u00a0 The regime puts the death toll at 34. The new figures still seem to be inaccurate and unrealistic<\/span>,\u201d the report added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While quoting local sources from Iran<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Iran<\/span>–<\/span>HRM<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0report read: \u201c<\/span>A local source in Isfahan reported,\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>I went to several pharmacies in\u00a0<\/span>Baharestan<\/span>\u00a0of Isfahan to purchase face masks and disinfectant gel. All pharmacies had posted a placard or a hand-written sign either on their windows or on the counter, saying, \u2018We do not have face masks, gloves, red and white ethanol alcohol, disinfectant solutions, and disinfectant gel. Please do not ask.\u2019 The pharmacy staff were not wearing gloves and in the best form, they were wearing face masks made with fabric.<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>A source in Mashhad said,\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>The regime is trying to conceal the situation. Pharmacies neither have face masks nor any disinfectant. The situation is very bad<\/span>,\u2019\u201d read the report.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coronavirus in Iranian prisons\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

While referring to the spread of COVID-19 in Iranian prisons and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s inaction to contain and control this disease<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Iran HRM wrote:\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Another tragedy is the outbreak of the Coronavirus in prisons. Overcrowded wards and the disastrous state of the hygiene in prisons foretell of a major disaster being underway.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The closed space of prisons, low quality of food, lack of medical and health resources, overcrowded rooms, and emergence of victims of Coronavirus in some prisons, have caused serious concern among prisoners and their families. In some prisons, including the prisons of Khorramabad (capital of Lorestan Province) and\u00a0<\/span>Sanandaj<\/span>\u00a0(capital of the Iranian Kurdistan Province), inmates have demanded to receive medical and health resources, as well as having prisoners suspected of contracting the virus being quarantined. They have threatened to go on hunger strike if prison authorities fail to respond to their demands<\/span>,\u201d read the report.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Death penalty\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In another part of its monthly report, Iran HRM gave information\u00a0<\/span>about\u00a0<\/span>executions and death sentence<\/span>s during\u00a0<\/span>February. According to Iran HRM<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>the Iranian regime has executed at least 22 people in February 2020.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Forced Confession and torture\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Iran HRM also referred to\u00a0<\/span>the ongoing tortures inside Iranian prisons, as\u00a0<\/span>a method for the regime to obtain forced confessions from prisoners. Iran HRM referred to Ms.\u00a0<\/span>Noloufar<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Bayani<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0case<\/span>, a female environmentalist<\/span>\u00a0who is now serving\u00a0<\/span>a 10-year sentence in Iran.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>In a letter written in February 2020,\u00a0<\/span>Niloufar<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Bayani<\/span>\u00a0described the interrogations and wrote, the agents forced her to\u00a0<\/span>‘<\/span>mimic sounds of wild animals.<\/span>‘<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Bayani<\/span>\u00a0has also revealed that her interrogators continually made sexual threats against her, showed her pictures of torture tools, made her listen to descriptions of others\u2019 tortures and execution for hours, and pretended that they were going to give her a paralyzing or lethal injection<\/span>,\u201d read the report.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
