Call for immediate international action\u00a0to save the lives of the prisoners<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several MEK activists, Resistance Units members, also died of infection while trying to help the victims<\/strong><\/p>\n

The People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI \/MEK)<\/a> announced on Monday, March 2, 2020, that as of 8:00 pm local time, the death toll nationwide from Coronavirus had exceeded 1000.<\/p>\n

\n

Some 300 victims in Qom, 209 in Tehran, 61 in Isfahan, 92 in Gilan, 58 in Golestan, 48 in Central, 45 in Kermanshah, 37 in Fars and more than 100 in Mazandaran have lost their lives.<\/p>\n

Additionally, in many other cities including Bushehr, Zanjan, Khorramdareh, Iranshahr, Saqqez, Baneh, Chaypareh, Urmia, Ilam, Samaleh, Salehshahr, Mahshahr, Ahvaz, Andimeshk, Sarbandar, Tabriz, Bonab, Yasuj, Khorramabad, Malayer, Hamedan, Neyshabur, Kashmar, Mashhad, Karaj, Sorkheh Hesar, Semnan, Shahroud, Yazd, Qazvin, and Bandar Abbas several people have also died. A number of People\u2019s Mujahideen (PMOI\/MEK) activists and members of Resistance Units, who had rushed to the aid of the infected compatriots are among the victims.<\/p>\n

Preventive medical resources and equipment are essentially in the possession of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and regime officials. Ordinary patients are deprived of many basic needs, such as masks and disinfectant liquids.\u00a0The hoarding of masks and other medical equipment and their sale on the black market by the IRGC and other government agencies have become routine. \u00a0\u00a0Regime officials and state media have acknowledged that such equipment is sometimes sold at 10 times the actual price.<\/p>\n

Many reports from various prisons around the country indicate that the virus has spread to the Greater Tehran Prison (Fashafouyeh Gohardasht, Ghezel-Hesar, Central Karaj, Urmia, Shiban-Ahvaz and Kashan prisons. The overcrowded prisons and the lack of hygiene have accelerated the spread of the virus. Prisoners are deprived of masks and disinfectants. In some prisons, such as Ghezel-Hesar, even soap and detergents are not available. Death row political prisoner Amir Hossein Moradi, one of the protesters during the November uprising, is among those infected by the virus. Two infected political prisoners in Shiban-Ahvaz prison have also been quarantined, and there is no information available about their status.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a>, again expressed alarm over the spread of the Coronavirus in Iranian prisons and called on the United Nations Secretary-General, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Human Rights Council, and other international human rights organizations to take urgent action to save the lives of the prisoners, and prevent a major humanitarian catastrophe.<\/p>\n

\n

Numerous reports indicate #Coronavirus<\/a> has spread to #Iran<\/a> prisons. I urge the UN Secretary General, the High Commissioner for #HumanRights<\/a>, and other relevant agencies to take urgent action to save the lives of Iranian prisoners and prevent a major humanitarian catastrophe.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Rajavi noted that the regime has engaged in a cover-up and deception in a bid to counter the Iranian people\u2019s fury and uprising.
