In a\u00a0<\/span>conference in the\u00a0<\/span>United Kingdom\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>House of Commons<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on T<\/span>uesday<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>February 25,\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ross-party\u00a0<\/span>Members of Parliament<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0members of the House of Lords<\/span>, prominent jurists and women\u2019s rights activists discussed women\u2019s rights in Iran and the struggle for democratic change\u00a0<\/span>in the run-up to<\/span>\u00a0International Women\u2019s Day<\/span>, on\u00a0<\/span>March 8.<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>event was organized by the\u00a0<\/span>British Committee for Iran Freedom<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI welcome everybody to this early celebration of IWD but with an emphasis\u00a0on the situation of\u00a0women in Iran from various perspectives. I come at this from a legal perspective and my work on Iran is in relation to 1988 massacre and calling for an independent UN set-up inquiry into these mass executions”, she said in her opening remarks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The panelists of this conference\u00a0<\/span>highlighted that the<\/span>\u00a0women\u2019s situation in Iran is alarming and continues to deteriorate, especially in recent years during the tenure of the so-called\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>moderate<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0president, Hassan Rouhani.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They also pointed to the<\/span>\u00a0prominent role of women and their active participation in the recent protests and the historic movement for freedom, in particular in the\u00a0<\/span>organized<\/span>\u00a0Resistance movement,\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/span>, against the regime for a democratic change in Iran<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Former Speaker of the House of Commons, Baroness Boothroyd\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe U<\/span>K\u00a0<\/span>Government now with its huge majority must recogni<\/span>z<\/span>e and back the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people, their organi<\/span>z<\/span>ed Resistance movement NCRI, and support Maryam\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Rajavi\u2019s<\/span><\/a>\u00a010-point<\/a> democratic platform as the viable alternative to the current religious dictatorship.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>O<\/span>ur message should simply be that we recogni<\/span>z<\/span>e that the problems in Iran have an Iranian solution and we proudly support it<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rt Hon David Jones MP said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe Iranian nation largely reaffirmed its support for the protest movement by boycotting the regime\u2019s illegitimate parliamentary election last Friday. The nationwide boycott of the election was both a resounding no to the regime in Iran as well as a sign that the movement for democratic change in Iran is very much alive and deserve international recognition.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe boycott came following a call by the NCRI <\/a>President-elect, Mrs<\/span>.<\/span> Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, and the activities of the Iranian opposition, the PMOI\u2019s <\/a>Resistance units all across the country\u201d, he stressed, adding<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cOnce again, the Iranian nation showed their desire for change and this is a reality that should be recogni<\/span>z<\/span>ed by both the UK Government and the\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>nternational\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ommunity<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Struan Stevenson, former M<\/span>ember of the European Parliament\u00a0<\/span>and the<\/span>\u00a0Coordinator of the Campaign for Iran Change<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>chastised<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the EU for continuing its appeasement policy towards the regime in Iran.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDespite nationwide protests in November and a violent crackdown by the Iranian regime that resulted in over 1,500 deaths, including 400 women, 5,000 injured and an estimated 20,000 arrested, the EU Foreign Policy Chief\u00a0<\/span>Josep<\/span>\u00a0Borrell, went to Tehran to meet with senior officials of the regime and to express the EU\u2019s on-going support for the defunct nuclear deal\u201d,\u00a0<\/span>he said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rt Hon Theresa Villiers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cNow as I have done in this event in previous years, I pay tribute to all the women who have taken part in those political protests across Iran. They are incredibly brave and\u00a0<\/span>it is clear that women<\/span>\u00a0in Iran are at the forefront of demands for democratic change, and reform and human rights\u201d, said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Baroness Verma,\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ormer Parliamentary Under-Secretary of Department for International Development and Chairwomen of UN Women UK, said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cMaryam Rajavi is an iconic figure for all of us and the Governments and ministers around the world should show the same courage and speak up for women’s rights not only in Iran but around the world.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Lord Alton of Liverpool\u00a0<\/span>said:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cGirls as young as 15 or 16 years of age as well as pregnant women were executed in prisons across Iran during the 1988 massacre, which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Montazeri described the massacre as the worst crime in the history of the Islamic Republic\u201d, citing revelations by the late Ayatollah Montazeri, the Supreme Leader<\/span>–<\/span>in-waiting at the time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK and its international allies should be seeking at a very minimum a referral to the international criminal court for the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in Iran’s prisons, which is so serious that it is considered a crime against humanity. If that it is vetoed and blocked, the UK Government should be helping to establish a regional tribunal to bring those responsible to justice,\u201d Lord Alton added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary\u00a0<\/span>Glindon<\/span>\u00a0MP\u00a0<\/span>appreciated<\/span>\u00a0the NCRI <\/a>for working for the progress of women\u2019s rights in Iran and said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWe will continue to support these efforts and the cause of human rights in Iran.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>panelists urged the<\/span>\u00a0UK Government\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0use the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council that starts this week to demand the UN Secretary General immediately dispatch an international fact-finding mission to Iran to investigate the killing of protesters and to visit the Iranian prisons to meet with those arrested\u00a0<\/span>during the nationwide Iran\u00a0<\/span>protests and political prisoners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They called on the UK Government to work with\u00a0<\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>international allies in this regard and to pressure the regime for the immediate release of those arrested in recent protests, all political prisoners and dual citizens.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
