On Monday,\u00a0<\/span>Ahmad Amir Abadi Farahani,<\/span>\u00a0member of the regime\u2019s parliament from the city of Qom, where\u00a0<\/span>coronavirus was first detected,\u00a0<\/span>revealed that 50 people in Qom ha<\/a><\/span>d died<\/a>\u00a0withing\u00a0the past two weeks\u00a0<\/span>due to the COVID -19.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the spread of this deadly virus, the Iranian regime\u2019s officials, instead of taking necessary measures<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have rushed to reject\u00a0<\/span>the spread of coronavirus and downplay the danger<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the same day, Ali\u00a0<\/span>Rabiei<\/span>, spokesperson for the government of Hassan Rouhani, and deputy health minister\u00a0<\/span>Iraj<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Harirchi<\/span>\u00a0held a joint press conference in which they tried to downplay the crisis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI deny the claim,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Harirchi<\/span>\u00a0said when questioned about the 50 deaths in Qom. \u201cAccording to the directives of the government and the [Supreme National] Security Council, no one else is qualified to declare news like this. We have the information.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harirchi<\/span>\u00a0further added that anyone who has information in this regard should contact the government through private channels. \u201cIf the number of deaths in Qom is half or even a quarter of this figure, I will resign,\u201d he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harirchi<\/span>\u00a0also tried to justify the government\u2019s shortcomings in providing safety and protective equipment to the public. \u201cWe have said it clearly that ordinary people do not need face masks,\u201d he said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about the reason for the high casualty rates in Iran compared to other countries,\u00a0<\/span>Harirchi<\/span>\u00a0responded<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cOther countries have a policy of concealment and denial.\u201d Interestingly, the first signs of the coronavirus had been seen in Iran weeks earlier, but the regime\u2019s own officials admitted that due to the elections, they had refrained from making them public.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To this,\u00a0<\/span>Rabiei<\/span>\u00a0added<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cAs the spokesperson of the government, I can tell you that many countries don\u2019t have the transparency that we have. We acted in a very transparent way in this regard.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These reactions are indeed<\/span>\u00a0due to the regime\u2019s inhumane nature and\u00a0<\/span>its antipatriotic policies<\/span>. Yet<\/span>, there are several other reasons why the clerical regime<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has tried\u00a0<\/span>to downplay this crisis.\u00a0<\/span>First,<\/span>\u00a0the regime\u2019s authorities<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0particularly\u00a0<\/span>supreme leader Ali Khamenei, are terrified of another popular uprising like the nationwide Iran protests in November which shook\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s foundations<\/span>. S<\/span>econdly, the regime\u00a0<\/span>was holding its parliamentary elections<\/span>. Fearing a\u00a0<\/span>low election<\/span>\u00a0turnout and people\u2019s boycott, which did happen, the regime\u00a0<\/span>tried to downplay the coronavirus crisis<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the regime\u2019s crushing defeat of its sham parliamentary elections, Khamenei said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>A collective campaign was undertaken against people\u2019s participation in the election. On social media, a variety of entities used every factor possible\u2026 Since a month, two months ago, they said this was not an election, not a real election, the Guardian Council has done this or that\u2026 And this latest illness (COVID-19) became an excuse. In other words, they did not miss the slightest opportunity and did not even waste a few hours.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reports obtained by the People\u2019s Mojahedin\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Org<\/span>a<\/span>nization<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a> network from Iran\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>shed more light on<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0regime\u2019s deliberate denial of the dimension<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>coronavirus crises.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Intelligence\u00a0<\/span>Ministry\u00a0<\/span>is putting a lot of pressure on hospital personnel to prevent news from getting out.
