Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, released a report on the human rights situation in Iran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Jav<\/span>a<\/span>id Rehman, the<\/span>\u00a0U<\/span>nited Nations<\/span>\u00a0Special Rapporteur\u00a0<\/span>on the situation of<\/span>\u00a0human rights in Iran,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0report released on February 19,\u00a0<\/span>2020, said he was \u201c<\/span>shocked\u201d at the numbe<\/span>r of deaths, acute injuries, and ill-treatment of persons detained during the November 2019 protests<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The nationwide Iran protests erupted in November, following the\u00a0<\/span>fuel price hike. According to reports published\u00a0<\/span>at the time\u00a0<\/span>by the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK)<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the regime\u2019s security forces killed over 1500 protesters, arrested 12,000 and injured 4,000.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Further reports published by the MEK\u00a0<\/a><\/span>and other leading rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM)\u00a0<\/span>confirmed<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0the Iranian regime use<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0violence and torture\u00a0<\/span>against the detained protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Mr. Rehman wrote in his report:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAccording to reports, detainees are being tortured or are suffering other forms of ill-treatment, sometimes to extract forced confessions.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are also reports of denials of medical treatment, including for injuries caused by the excessive use of force by the security forces, with some other detainees being held incommunicado or being subjected to enforced disappearance<\/span>,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Rehman a<\/span>lso highlighted that he is \u201c<\/span>concerned about reports that families of individuals killed by the security forces have been threatened not to speak out.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Javaid<\/span>\u00a0Rehman wrote in his report that in the days following the protests, images and reports emerged which demonstrated the security forces\u2019 brutal methods including direct shooting of unarmed citizens.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Javid Rehman wrote in his report,\u00a0<\/span>one of the members of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committee\u00a0<\/span>of the regime\u00a0<\/span>had admitted<\/span>\u00a0that more than 7,000 protesters had been arrested. They were detained in overcrowded places without having access to their lawyers. They are\u00a0<\/span>being\u00a0<\/span>tortured and mistreated and put under pressure to make forced confessions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Javaid<\/span>\u00a0Rehman\u2019s new report has been compiled under the UN General Assembly (UNGA)\u2019s Resolution 74\/167 and is scheduled to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council gathering on March 9, 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Javiad<\/span>\u00a0Rehman<\/span>\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0urge<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian<\/span>\u00a0regime to free all the protesters arrested in November 2019 and to immediately inform their families of their conditions\u00a0<\/span>and whereabouts<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Rehman\u00a0<\/span>also<\/span>\u00a0referred to the ongoing execution of minors<\/span>, dire conditions in the detention centers, use of\u00a0<\/span>lethal<\/span>\u00a0force and violence against ethnic and religious minorities, public<\/span>\u00a0hanging<\/span>s<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>killing porters in<\/span>\u00a0Kurdistan and\u00a0<\/span>Sistan<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Baluchestan<\/span>\u00a0provinces<\/span>, and discrimination against women.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Javid Rehman\u2019s report<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>once again highlights the urgent<\/span>\u00a0need for the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>international community\u00a0<\/span>to take action\u00a0<\/span>to stop further human rights violations in Iran.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0ha<\/span>d repeatedly urged the U<\/span>N\u00a0<\/span>Secretary General to \u201c<\/span>dispatch an international fact-finding mission to Iran to investigate the conditions of death and injury of protesters in November and visit Iranian prisons and prisoners<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
