Iran’s sham parliamentary elections faced widespread boycott by Iranian people<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Iranian regime held its parliamentary elections farce, which was\u00a0<\/span>met by a general boycot<\/a>t<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This was a major blow<\/a> to the Iranian regime which had been counting on this election\u00a0<\/span>for months.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The complete<\/span>\u00a0boycott\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>sham election by Iranian people\u00a0<\/span>was a positive answer to the call\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to boycott the election<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reports from Iran obtained by the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq)<\/a> from thousands of election polls across Iran confirms that this was a complete boycott by the people, and most of the polling stations were empty during the day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to reports from thousands of polling stations nationwide, including in Tehran, Karaj, Shahriar,\u00a0<\/span>Robat<\/span>\u00a0Karim, Islamshahr, Qods, Isfahan, Baharestan, Najafabad, Golpaygan, Zarinshahr, Yazdanshahr,\u00a0<\/span>Lamerd<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Dasht<\/span>-e Arjan, Firouzabad, Zahedan, Sonqor, Neyshabour, Mashhad, Shahr-e Kord, Kazeroun, Dalahou, Hamedan, Kermanshah, Qazvin, Alvand,\u00a0<\/span>Na\u2019ein<\/span>, Yazd, Yassouj,\u00a0<\/span>Malayer<\/span>, Rasht, Sari, Nowshahr, Babol,\u00a0<\/span>Babolsar<\/span>, Tabriz, Miyaneh, Daylaman, Dehdasht, Shush, Behbahan,\u00a0<\/span>Bukan<\/span>, Azadshahr, Khorramabad, Kouhdasht, Semnan, Qeshm Island, and Bandar\u00a0<\/span>Kangan<\/span>, the Iranian people have completely boycotted the mullahs\u2019 election masquerade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Majid Ansari, one of the parliament candidates, admitted that polling stations were deserted this morning and expressed hope that \u201cGod willing participation would be better in the coming hours.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday, t<\/span>he NCRI\u00a0<\/span>by calling the boycott a\u00a0<\/span>major defeat for the regime,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>released a statement<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a>, congratulated the Iranian people for the nationwide boycott of the sham election by the ruling religious fascism. Mrs. Rajavi added that the failure of the regime to intimidate people to go to the polls reflects the Iranian people\u2019s homage to the 1,500 martyrs of the November 2019 uprising and portends of subsequent uprisings. This unprecedented boycott was a resounding \u201cno\u201d to Khamenei, Rouhani and the entirety of the clerical regime and showed the public\u2019s enthusiasm for Resistance units\u2019 slogan of \u201cmy vote is overthrow<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d reads the statement<\/span>\u00a0adding:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The nationwide boycott of the election<\/a> farce will aggravate the regime\u2019s internal feuding and deadly impasse and expedite its overthrow by the Iranian people and Resistance. Shaking the bloody hands of this illegitimate regime must stop at the international level. The world community must recognize the right of the Iranian people and Resistance to change the clerical regime and establish democracy and people\u2019s sovereignty.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Engulfed<\/span>\u00a0with<\/span>\u00a0different\u00a0<\/span>domestic and international\u00a0<\/span>crisis,<\/span>\u00a0the Iranian regime needed this parliamentary election farce and massive election turnout to achieve several points: First to portray a democratic fa\u00e7ade for western countries and regime\u2019s apologists to legitimize relationships with this vicious regime. Second, to\u00a0<\/span>somehow<\/span>\u00a0use massive turnout to legitimize its rule, particularly after its deadly crackdown on the nationwide Iran protests, and killing over 1500 people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been month<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0since the regime\u2019s authorities, particularly\u00a0<\/span>its supreme leader Khamenei, and\u00a0<\/span>President<\/span>\u00a0Hassan Rouhani\u00a0<\/span>have been begging people to participate in the\u00a0<\/span>elections. Even this morning, while casting their votes they desperately pleaded with people to\u00a0<\/span>participate in the elections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Khamenei, terrified of the nationwide boycott of the election farce,\u00a0<\/span>had earlier<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>participation is a religious duty and edict. \u201cElection is a popular jihad; strengthens the\u00a0<\/span>country and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>safeguards the system\u2019s legitimacy. Presence in the election and voting is a religious duty, a religious edict. It is not simply a nationalistic and revolutionary duty\u2026. Whoever likes the system must take part in the election,\u201d he emphasized.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Rajavi had earlier declared: \u201cThese appeals, which reflect the regime\u2019s fear of widespread public boycott, only increase the people\u2019s revulsion toward this illegitimate election and strengthen the public resolve to boycott this farce even more.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Rajavi\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>reiterated: The Iranian people had cast their real vote in the November 2019 and January 2020 uprisings with chants of \u201cdeath to the principle of the\u00a0<\/span>velayat<\/span>-e faqih, and death to Khamenei.\u201d She added, \u201cBoycotting this sham is a patriotic duty and the Iranian nation\u2019s bond with the martyrs, especially the 1,500 massacred during the November 2019 uprising<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2020 Parliamentary elections\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>ook\u00a0<\/span>place<\/span>\u00a0at a time that there were three major uprising<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in Iran in January 2018, November 2019, and January 2020, shaking the foundation of the Iranian regime. The population has risen against the rampant corruption, economic mismanagement, and lack of freedoms. Inflation and unemployment are at\u00a0<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>all-time high. The people are further disillusioned about all factions of the regime after the downing of the Ukrainian passenger plane and lying for three days about it. Tehran\u2019s \u201cstrategic depth\u201d in Iraq and Lebanon is shattered, as the population in those countries are pushing the regime out. Regime\u2019s number 2, namely Qassem Soleimani is dead. International sanctions are only increasing, and Tehran\u2019s oil exports are close to none. These circumstances have made it an easy decision for the population to boycott the elections and ha<\/span>ve\u00a0<\/span>left the regime with tough impossible choices to survive. It is a life and death battle for the regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>pre-election\u00a0<\/span>purge<\/span>\u00a0of candidates by the Guardian Council, which is controlled by the regime’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, is a regular occurrence. But, this time, Khamenei\u00a0<\/span>ha<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0ordered the near purge of all the rival faction members. It is anticipated that more than 80 percent of the upcoming parliamentary seats will be allocated to Khamenei’s faction<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reason for this purge is the increasing vulnerability and deadly impasse of Khamenei. His tolerance threshold is at a new low. He is confronted with two choices, each of which is more dangerous than the other.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1- The first is to close ranks even more while adopting a more aggressive posture toward the U.S. and carry out more internal purges and suppression.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2- The second is to lessen the conflict with the U.S. and accept some of the 12 points announced<\/span>\u00a0by the U.S.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on the regime’s internal deliberations, Khamenei has decided to close ranks and carry out a complete purge during the elections for three main reasons: Fear of uprisings in scales of nationwide Iran protests in November, fear of the opposition particularly the MEK <\/a>and NCRI<\/a>, and fear of the\u00a0 regime’s increasing international isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s utter fear was demonstrated by various regime officials including\u00a0<\/span>Rouhani\u2019s political advisor Hesameddin\u00a0<\/span>Ashena<\/span>\u00a0who<\/span>\u00a0wrote, \u201cSnubbing the ballot box is not snubbing the government or the Guardian Council. It leads to an increase in sanctions, in the probability of a military assault, and in MEK\u2019s sabotage operations.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>election<\/span>\u00a0will have severe short-term and medium-term consequences for the regime, leaving the regime increasingly broken, more vulnerable, with a weaker social base and faced with the potential of greater protests and social uprisings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is time for the International community to recognize the rights of the Iranian people to change their repressive regime and that their time has come to establish a republic based on the free vote of the Iranian people, based on the separation of religion and state, and based on pluralism, justice<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and equality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
