T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF)<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>placed\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime\u00a0<\/span>on its blacklist<\/span>\u00a0on Friday,<\/span>\u00a0after the regime\u00a0<\/span>\u201cfailed to comply with international anti-terrorism financing norms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

This\u00a0<\/span>development is simultaneous\u00a0<\/span>with the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>sham parliamentary elections and its absolute failure in\u00a0<\/span>having\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>minimum<\/span>\u00a0turnout\u00a0<\/span>following a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>general boycott<\/span>\u00a0of the polls<\/span>. In\u00a0<\/span>addition<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0it comes a day after the United States slapped new sanctions\u00a0<\/span>of five members of the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>G<\/span>uardian\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ouncil and its elections supervision committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision comes after more than three years of warnings from the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) urging Tehran to enact terrorist financing conventions,\u201d Reuters\u00a0<\/span>reported<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Reuters<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0this\u00a0<\/span>decision means \u201c<\/span>more scrutiny of transactions with Iran, tougher external auditing of financing firms operating in the country and add pressure on the few banks and businesses still operating with Iran.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The FATF, which oversees the security of the global financial system and sets banking transaction standards,\u00a0<\/span>had<\/span>\u00a0given the Iranian regime until February to finalize the laws that will allow the country to join the Palermo and Counter Financing Terrorism (CFT) conventions against funding terrorism and money laundering.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Secretariat of the\u00a0<\/span>National<\/span>\u00a0Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) released a statement in this regard.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a>, said: Backlisting the clerical regime is indispensable to combatting terrorism and warmongering in the Middle East and across the globe. She added: The mullahs consciously and deliberately violated Palermo and CFT and refused to accept FATF in a bid to continue to finance terrorism and\u00a0<\/span>belligerence and<\/span>\u00a0circumvent the sanctions<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201creads the NCRI statement adding:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The NCRI President-elect underscored that terrorism and warmongering are indispensable to this regime and critical to its survival. It will never abandon financing terrorism and money laundering. Nor will it never submit to financial transparency. Trade with this regime does not serve the interests of the Iranian people and only provides fuel to the mullahs\u2019 machinery of suppression and terrorism.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the one hand, the regime is in dire need of foreign trade and financial channels as the noose of\u00a0<\/span>international<\/span>\u00a0sanctions tightens around it<\/span>s neck<\/span>. Many of its trade partners, including European states, have predicated the establishment of new financial and trade channels on the passing of the FATF laws. But on the other hand, becoming compliant with FATF rules w<\/span>ould\u00a0<\/span>expose many of Tehran\u2019s illicit activities, including the funding of terrorist and fundamentalist groups in the Middle East and across the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime’s most significant problem with adopting the CFT is the obstacles that CFT imposes on the clerical regime in<\/span>\u00a0its<\/span>\u00a0support of terrorist groups. The regime describes its proxy terrorist groups as “Islamic Resistance<\/span>,<\/span>” and it needs their presence to preserve its so-called “national authority<\/span>,<\/span>” or rather the regime\u2019s security.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On January 11,\u00a0<\/span>Siroos<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Borna<\/span>, a member of the regime\u2019s parliament, in an interview with the state-run Iranian Diplomacy news agency stated that the reason for the regime adopting FATF is to avoid stopping its funding of \u201cthe groups that they [western governments] consider<\/span>\u00a0to be<\/span>\u00a0terrorists.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span>eferring to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC)<\/a> Quds Force<\/a>, as the regime\u2019s military lever abroad to continue its policies via export of terrorism,\u00a0<\/span>Borna<\/span>\u00a0said: “One of our major obstacles in adopting the CFT is that if we do so<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we should immediately stop funding the Quds Force\u2026\u2026 this is tantamount to self-sanctioning.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
