The\u00a0<\/span>press briefing o<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>Sunday<\/span>, February 16<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>by the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime\u2019s president,\u00a0<\/span>Hassan Rouhani<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0in which he discussed different critical issues<\/span>\u00a0purely demonstrated\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s deadlock.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Following the nationwide Iran protests in November and January,<\/span>\u00a0during which the Iranian people demonstrated their desire for regime change, the authorities are afraid of\u00a0<\/span>a national boycott of the elections. Rouhani and other officials<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0main goal in holding press conferences and interviews<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>beg people to participate in the elections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore<\/span>, Rouhani retraced his steps on some of the criticism he had made earlier\u00a0<\/span>during their infightings<\/span>\u00a0with other ruling factions in the regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rouhani and Elections\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Previously, in reaction\u00a0<\/span>to the massive purge of his faction<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0candidates<\/span>\u00a0by the Guardian Council at the beh<\/span>est of the regime\u2019s supreme leader Ali Khamenei<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Rouhani had criticized the Guardian Council and had described the parliamentary elections as \u201cselections.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>un<\/span>day<\/span>, Rouhani said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cI never have and never will question the elections. The elections are an important issue for our country\u2026 If it were selections, there would be no need for insisting and begging [<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0participation]. The selection was a reference to before the revolution\u2026 What I wanted to say is that we don\u2019t allow the elections to become selections, not that it is like that right now.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rouhani\u00a0<\/span>even went further\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>asking\u00a0<\/span>people\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>choose\u00a0<\/span>among those who<\/span>\u00a0go through the strict filters of the Guardian Council, saying<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThere are three options:\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hoosing the best, choosing from limited candidates, and no<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0taking part. If we can\u2019t make the best choice, should we also avoid choosing from limited candidates?\u00a0<\/span>This\u00a0<\/span>would be to our own detriment.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rouhani also\u00a0<\/span>took a step back<\/span>\u00a0on criticizing the uncompetitive nature of the elections. A previous estimate, first published by<\/span>\u00a0media outlets close to Rouhani\u2019s faction<\/span>, had\u00a0<\/span>stated<\/span>\u00a0that there will be no competition in 70 districts because the candidates are all from the same ruling faction. In his Sunday press conference,<\/span>\u00a0however,\u00a0<\/span>Rouhani<\/span>\u00a0said that there are now only 44 districts where there\u2019s no competition. \u201cThere will be a competition in most districts, and the people will show up\u2026 even if there wasn\u2019t any competition, I still believe the people should show up. We are all Iranians and we love the revolution and our country.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Engulfed by domestic and international crisis<\/span>, the regime needs the turnout as a\u00a0<\/span>green\u00a0<\/span>light\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0continue its destructive policies inside Iran and across the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rouhani still declined\u00a0to\u00a0give\u00a0information about the November\u00a0protests\u2019\u00a0death tally.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When asked about the number of people killed during the\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>\u00a0protests<\/span>\u00a0in November<\/span>, Rouhani\u00a0<\/span>showed\u00a0<\/span>his<\/span>\u00a0fear of admitting to the crimes of his regime<\/span>, mostly the slaughter of innocent protesters<\/span>. According\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>o\u00a0<\/span>reports obtained by<\/span>\u00a0the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a>, security forces killed over 1,500 protesters<\/a>. This figure was later confirmed by other media and widely reported.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rouhani,\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0<\/span>other officials of the regime<\/span>, tried to minimize the number of killing<\/span>, claiming that the numbers were misreported and widely\u00a0<\/span>exaggerated<\/span>. He also refrained from\u00a0<\/span>giving the so-called \u201creal figure.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe number of casualties is in the possession of the coroner. If the coroner\u2019s office knows all the aspects, which they probably know by now, then they will be able to declare the figures. But the figure that we are aware of is much smaller than what has been reported by the media,\u201d Rouhani said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rouhani<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0remarks once again\u00a0<\/span>confirm<\/span>\u00a0the Iranian regime\u2019s utter fear of\u00a0<\/span>the possibility\u00a0<\/span>of people\u2019s outrage to erupt<\/span>\u00a0if the regime\u00a0<\/span>confirms its crimes during the Iran protests.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about the Ukrainian airliner\u00a0<\/span>downed by the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC)<\/a> on January\u00a0<\/span>8,<\/span>\u00a0Rouhani<\/span>\u00a0tried to\u00a0<\/span>downplay and justify\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>three\u00a0<\/span>consecutive days of lies\u00a0<\/span>about the crash being due to a technical failure. He also downplayed the IRGC\u2019s crime, describing it as \u201chuman error.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[The lies were] not intentional and did not mean to damage the people\u2019s trust,\u201d Rouhani said. \u201cThe same armed forces who have brought much honor and achievements for us in the past stepped forth and assumed responsibility\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>the incident and apologized to the people. I admire the way the IRGC handled this.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
