The lawyer of a number of defendants accused of attacking the Saudi Embassy in Tehran, has revealed some of the details regarding the issued sentences in the case, stating that \u201cthe defendants are acquitted of the charges of criminal property damage. \u201c<\/p>\n
In an interview with the state news agency ILNA on November 2, Mostafa Shabani pointed to the case on attacking the Saudi Embassy and said that \u201cthere were about 45 defendants in the case, 25 of whose cases are being investigated in the Special Clerical Court while the other 20 were investigated in the Special Court for Civil Servants.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cin this regard, the sentences related to 20 of the defendants have been issued by the Special Court for Civil Servants. The defendants were charged with deliberately damaging the Saudi Embassy, arson and disrupting public order.\u201d<\/p>\n
The lawyer of some of the defendants said that the reason his clients were acquitted was that there was no complaint filed by Saudi Arabia in this regard. He added: \u201csince the issue of damaging the Saudi Embassy needs a private plaintiff and the Saudi government has not complained in this regard, the court acquitted the defendants of deliberately damaging the Saudi Embassy by rejecting the charges.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shabani then pointed to the regime\u2019s sham charges of disrupting public order and not attacking the embassy, and said: \u201cregarding the charges of disrupting public order, the court has issued different verdicts. Some of the defendants were sentenced to six months\u2019 imprisonment, some to 91 days while the rest were acquitted.\u201d<\/p>\n
The lawyer of a number of defendants accused of attacking the Saudi Embassy in Tehran acknowledged that the attackers were members of Basij and said: \u201call the 20 defendants are members of Basij who have a history of attending the battle fronts during Iran-Iraq war and even fighting in Syria. On the other hand, they were not prevented by the law enforcement forces, either.\u201d<\/p>\n
