Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Iran, there has been secrecy and lies in the statements and statistics released by Iranian regime officials.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

It is common knowledge that the regime ruling in Iran is so utterly dishonest that arguing otherwise is now considered\u00a0<\/span>outright nonsense. The mullahs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>refuse to\u00a0<\/span>provide the death toll<\/span>\u00a0of protesters killed during the November 2019 protests<\/a> and\u00a0<\/span>has only agreed to<\/span>\u00a0hand over the black boxes of a Ukrainian airliner that its forces shot down<\/span>\u00a0after delaying for two months<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Now, as the coronavirus evolves into a pandemic\u00a0<\/span>across the globe and\u00a0<\/span>Iran, we are witnessing Iranian regime officials continuously downplay the numbers of coronavirus deaths. As of\u00a0<\/span>Friday<\/span>, March 1<\/span>3<\/span>, Health Ministry officials in Iran claimed\u00a0<\/span>514<\/span>\u00a0ha<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0died of COVID-19<\/a>, far below the numbers provided by the Iranian opposition People’s\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Mojahedin<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Organization of Iran (PMO\/MEK)<\/a>, citizen reports and social media posts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the sake of the argument presented here, let\u2019s pu<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0those reports aside<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>listen to the regime\u2019s own officials and realize the mullahs\u2019 contradictions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Mostafa\u00a0<\/span>Faghihi<\/span>, a regime insider involved in state media, tweeted on March 9 protesting to the regime\u2019s Health Minister:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0<\/span>Namaki<\/span>! You won\u2019t provide the true coronavirus death toll? All right! I\u2019ll do it for you!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dear people!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly 2,000 people have been killed across the country (ten times the official stats [at the time]). More than 130 people have died just yesterday [March 8] in Tehran and Gilan!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0<\/span>Namaki<\/span>! Don\u2019t further insult the people!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This of course sounded alarm bells across the regime\u2019s spectrum.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Faghihi<\/span>\u00a0posted another tweet saying, \u201cThe numbers I published a few hours ago were not correct; My previous tweet about coronavirus cases was misinterpreted. I was emphasizing on \u2018suspicious coronavirus cases\u2019 that can be influenza or other\u00a0<\/span>illnesses<\/span>. As a result, I deleted my last tweet.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a clear indication of authorities pressuring and even threatening\u00a0<\/span>Faghihi<\/span>\u00a0to take back his previous remarks. Such cases further portray a very troubled regime desperate to first cloak the truth about\u00a0<\/span>Iran\u2019s COVID-19 epidemic and prevent this crisis from evolving into domestic protests threatening the regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All the while there are continuing signs of appeasement of Tehran\u2019s mullahs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bahram\u00a0<\/span>Parsaie<\/span>, a Majlis (parliament) member from the city of Shiraz, tweeted the following on March 8: \u201cDid the WHO rapporteur who said Iran has a strong medical system actually visit the coronavirus epicenters in Qom or northern parts of the country? Providing a report full of lies and cloaking the truth does nothing other than further worsen the crisis and fleeing from their global responsibility?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many users on social media also criticized WHO\u2019s reporting by posting a variety of videos and images of horrible conditions inside\u00a0<\/span>hospitals showing patients laying in hallways and ill\u00a0<\/span>Iranians, young and old,<\/span>\u00a0collapsing in the streets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Majlis member\u00a0<\/span>Gholamali<\/span>\u00a0Jafarzadeh\u00a0<\/span>Im<\/span>a<\/span>nabadi<\/span>\u00a0raised even more concerns on Iran\u2019s COVID-19 outbreak<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0questioned the regime\u2019s official stats. \u201cI should say very frankly that the numbers of those infected and deaths from the coronavirus is not correct,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 the cemeteries have no space and bodies are being buried on top of each other. In my opinion each day 30 to 40 people in this province\u00a0<\/span>alone\u00a0<\/span>are dying from this illness\u2026 let me be frank, we cannot maintain the safety of our medical staff. I would not be lying if I said that 50 percent the province\u2019s medical staff are infected.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Imanabadi<\/span>\u00a0also criticized remarks made by Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the regime\u2019s Supreme National Security Council. In his recent visit to Iraq, Shamkhani offered to provide aid to Iran\u2019s western neighbor \u201cto fight coronavirus.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Shamkhani! You are the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran. For the love of God think about Iran and Iranians<\/span>!<\/span>\u201d Jafarzadeh\u00a0<\/span>Im<\/span>a<\/span>nabadi<\/span>\u00a0said.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe situation in Gilan Province has\u00a0<\/span>become a dire emergency<\/span>\u00a0due to the coronavirus<\/span>. We have no beds to hospitalize patients, our medical staff are exhausted, we have no special masks or necessary gowns!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian regime is constantly being criticized for downplaying the coronavirus crisis and not being transparent on\u00a0<\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>COVID-19 death<\/span>\u00a0toll. As of Thursday, March 12, the Health Ministry\u00a0<\/span>had\u00a0<\/span>reported\u00a0<\/span>429<\/span>\u00a0deaths and\u00a0<\/span>10,075<\/span>\u00a0cases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>However,\u00a0<\/span>Morteza<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Gharoudi<\/span>, governor of Kashan in central Iran, said on March 9 that 88 people have died\u00a0<\/span>just\u00a0<\/span>in the two towns of Kashan and\u00a0<\/span>Aran-bidgol<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering the contradictory remarks of<\/span>\u00a0Health Ministry\u00a0<\/span>and other officials regarding\u00a0<\/span>the country\u2019s coronavirus death<\/span>, estimates<\/span>\u00a0by Radio\u00a0<\/span>Farda<\/span>\u00a0based on remarks made by various local officials place Iran\u2019s coronavirus death toll at 927 by March 9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As of<\/span>\u00a0Friday<\/span>, March 1<\/span>3<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Iranian opposition PMOI\/MEK<\/a>, citing its network inside the country, is reporting at least\u00a0<\/span>4<\/span>,<\/span>00<\/span>0 people have died of the coronavirus 1<\/span>60<\/span>\u00a0cities<\/span>\u00a0across Iran.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also interesting that Mohammad Mokhtari, a professional football\/soccer player in Iran, was arrested after saying over 100 people die on a daily basis in Gilan Province alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And while regime officials are voicing a variety of contradicting statements, Iranian regime Foreign Minister Mohammad\u00a0<\/span>Javad<\/span>\u00a0Zarif is using the opportunity and requesting a $5 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund to \u201cfight coronavirus.\u201d Like other regime officials, Zarif will not provide any explanation about the hygiene products, including millions of masks and gloves, being hoarded by the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in warehouses and\/or exported abroad for profits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is clear that during this COVID-19 crisis Iran\u2019s regime has no focus on providing medical for the general public. On the contrary, the mullahs are keeping a lid on the actual coronavirus death toll and cases, exporting and hoarding hygiene products desperately needed in hospitals and for ordinary people, and jumping to the occasion to ask for multi-<\/span>billion dollar<\/span>\u00a0loans.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In such circumstances, the international community can stand alongside the Iranian people through specific measures. \u201c<\/span>The only thing that matters for this regime and its officials is to keep their grip on\u00a0<\/span>power. People\u2019s lives, health, and resources have no value for the ruling mullahs<\/span>,\u201d said Iranian opposition President Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, head of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
