The full text is below.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>By: Ali Safavi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>April 4, 2020<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the coronavirus pandemic, the Iranian regime\u2019s conduct has been criminal. More than 20 countries can trace their infections back to Iran. Within the country itself, thousands have lost their lives. While the regime has made a concerted effort to blame sanctions as the real reason for the catastrophe, in reality, no one but the regime is responsible.<\/p>\n<p>First, some facts and figures. Every credible global institution has noted that the official figures provided by the regime\u2019s ministry of health is much lower than the actual number of fatalities. Officials treat this as a \u201cnational security\u201d matter and consider releasing unofficial figures \u201ca criminal act punishable by law.\u201d Many have been arrested.\u00a0The most reliable alternative source of information is the largest organized opposition movement, the Mujahedin-e Khalq (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mojahedineng.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PMOI\/MEK<\/a>). The MEK has been gathering data from various hospitals, morgues, mortuaries in cities across Iran and reporting on it every day for the past three weeks. As of March 29, the latest MEK tally puts the number of dead at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/statement-human-rights\/iran-coronavirus-death-toll-exceeds-15500-in-237-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15,500<\/a>\u00a0in 232 cities.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My commentary in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/InsightsIssues?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@InsightsIssues<\/a> about the devastating impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19Pandemic?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19Pandemic<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a>: Enough With The Crocodile Tears For The Irarian People <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/757EW9GZTD\">https:\/\/t.co\/757EW9GZTD<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NCRIUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NCRIUS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iran_policy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Iran_Policy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/statedeptspox?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@statedeptspox<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ali Safavi (@amsafavi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amsafavi\/status\/1246371295761137664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 4, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Reports from the city of Qom, where the spread seems to have started, show that 60 to 70 people are dying of coronavirus every day, and existing mortuaries can no longer accommodate them. Satellite imagery shows graves being dug in Qom at an unusual speed. According to the Washington Post, these coronavirus burial pits are so vast they\u2019re visible from space.<\/p>\n<p>The virus has infiltrated even the regime\u2019s own ranks, with more than 100 of its officials, including over two dozen senior clerics and associates of supreme leader Ali Khamenei himself, having contracted the virus, demonstrating the depth of crisis in Iran and the regime\u2019s incompetence. Among medical staff, so far more than 100 doctors, nurses and other providers have lost their lives while treating coronavirus patients.<\/p>\n<p>How did Iran become the coronavirus epicenter?\u00a0There is reliable evidence that the regime knew about the spread as early as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/6145588492001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 3rd,<\/a>\u00a0but deliberately covered it up. It did so in order to ensure as high a public turnout as possible for the revolution anniversary march on February 11 and the sham parliamentary elections on February 21. Mahan Air, controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), continued passenger flights into China well into the month of March.<\/p>\n<p>So the regime cover-up is undisputed. And that cover up was instrumental in the rapid spread because the public was deliberately misguided.\u00a0While blaming sanctions, the regime has refused international help. For example, Doctors Without Borders dispatched a field hospital to the city of Isfahan, but officials expelled them. Alireza Vahabzadeh, a senior Health Ministry official tweeted on March 24: \u201cThere is no need for foreigners to set up field hospitals.\u201d\u00a0For the regime, people are not a priority, much less their health. In November of last year, it massacred\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-iran-protests-specialreport\/special-report-irans-leader-ordered-crackdown-on-unrest-do-whatever-it-takes-to-end-it-idUSKBN1YR0QR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1,500 protestors<\/a>. It is no surprise that instead of hospitals and medical facilities, the regime has invested heavily in malign activities like the nuclear and missile weapons program, which it deems necessary for its own morbid survival.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, corruption in Iran has reached cosmic proportions. Last July, health minister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/iran-blatant-lies-by-mullahs-president-hassan-rouhani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saied Namaki<\/a>\u00a0said: \u201c$1.3 billion dollars allotted to the purchase of medical supplies has gone missing.\u201d\u00a0Due to hoarding of supplies, price manipulation tactics, and sheer mismanagement, hospitals lack basic necessities to confront the spread of coronavirus. The IRGC, for example, hoards and sells on the black-market basic items like masks and disinfectants at 10 times the average price.\u00a0The regime\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/publications\/books\/the-rise-of-iran-s-revolutionary-guards-financial-empire-how-the-supreme-leader-and-the-irgc-rob-the-people-to-fund-international-terror\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial institutions<\/a>, like Khamenei\u2019s Setad (with over $100B in assets), the National Development Fund (with tens of billions of dollars in assets) and other large economic powerhouses (controlling 60% of the national wealth), have so much resources that even a small portion could pay for the costs of confronting coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>While complaining about international sanctions, on January 8, the regime increased the budget of the IRGC terrorist Quds Force by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.radiofarda.com\/a\/iran-khamenei-orders-additional-200m-euros-to-qods-in-next-two-months\/30364067.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">200 million euros<\/a>. This is why many medical staff have not been paid for months.\u00a0Moreover, medicine has never been sanctioned. The Director of Organization of Food and Medicine announced on March 21 that special gowns, masks, and hygienic material can be imported in 48 hours.
