Six inmates have already lost their lives in the Greater Tehran Penitentiary (Fashafuyeh), which lacks even basic hygiene necessities. Inmates suffering from coronavirus are not being separated from others in this facility.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to Iran HRM the month<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of March has been overshadowed by the Coronavirus outbreak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran<\/a> announced on Monday that the coronavirus\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has already killed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/pmoi-mek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 1<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">9<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">00 Iranians across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">More than 19,500 people have died of coronavirus in 242 cities checkered across all of Iran&#39;s 31 provinces, according to the Iranian opposition PMOI\/MEK.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19Pandemic?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19Pandemic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CBYIym2yyX\">pic.twitter.com\/CBYIym2yyX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; People&#39;s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) (@Mojahedineng) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mojahedineng\/status\/1247207202336542725?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 6, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prisoners in Iran have been particularly vulnerable because of the outbreak. They have been unable to avoid the virus, as once it enters a prison it is certain to spread among inmates in the very unhygienic conditions that they survive in.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In Greater Tehran Penitentiary (Fashafuyeh)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it has been reported that six prisoners have died after contracting Coronavirus. The inmates that have been infected are not separated from the rest of the prison population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Iranian regime said back in February that prisoners would be granted furlough because of the health crisis. The head of the regime\u2019s judiciary, Ebrahim Raisi, also said that new prisoners would not be accepted in the province of Tehran. However, this has not happened \u2013 there have been\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0new prisoners accepted.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once again, political prisoners face discrimination and it was announced that political prisoners would not be granted furlough.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During the month of March,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0prisoners went on hunger strike because of their continued detention and the filthy conditions they were being\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">held in. Riots ensued and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0prisoners were able to escape. All they wanted was to be protected against Coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Iran HRM&#39;s March Report sheds light on the grim condition of Iranian prisons wrecked by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/coronavirus?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#coronavirus<\/a> outbreak. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNHumanRights?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UNHumanRights<\/a><br \/> should visit prisons in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iran?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iran<\/a> &amp; compel the regime to release prisoners particularly political prisoners.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JavaidRehman?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JavaidRehman<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zONcZBtYpw\">https:\/\/t.co\/zONcZBtYpw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; IRAN HRM (@IranHrm) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IranHrm\/status\/1246888093250183175?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 5, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHundreds of prisoners went on hunger strike, asking the authorities to regularly disinfect prisons, provide masks and hand sanitizers to prisoners, quarantine those suspected of having the virus and grant prison leave to as many prisoners as possible,\u201d read the report.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran, infected prisoners were not quarantined or treated. Yet, prison guards refused to enter cells and they did not even carry out the usual daily head counts. One prisoner described the appalling conditions they are held in, stating that they are served\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inadequately<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0cooked rice or soya, with no vegetables or protein.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The prisoners are packed into rooms that are nowhere near big enough for them to live comfortably, and they are denied medical care. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Coronavirus outbreak in Iran has become so serious because the regime failed to take\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">suitable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0action. Other countries have acted in a timely manner and have taken steps to protect the population.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The main reason for the dramatic and rapid spread of COVID-19 in Iran has been the cover-up orchestrated by the clerical regime.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Iranian regime<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was intended to ensure the participation of\u00a0a large number of\u00a0people in the state-run annual march marking the anniversary of the 1979 Revolution on February 11, as well as the parliamentary election sham scheduled for February 21.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It has failed to adhere to the World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) regulations with regard to the assessment of events in the country. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are calls by many organizations and human rights activists around the world for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in Iran to send a delegation to Iran to assess the situation and to take steps to improve conditions for the people, in particular the vulnerable such as the poor and the prisoners across the country. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIran Human Rights Monitor calls on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in Iran to dispatch an international fact-finding mission to visit Iran prisons, and inquire about the conditions of prisoners. Iran HRM also calls on all international human rights organizations to undertake effective efforts to secure the release of all prisoners, especially political prisoners,\u201d Iran HRM
