How I Was Interrogated\u00a0<\/span><\/b>By<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The New York Times<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Mr. Mohammad\u00a0<\/span>Shafaei<\/span>, a member of\u00a0<\/span>the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>an article published<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Issues and Insights website,\u00a0<\/span>debunked allegations made by the New York Times\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>arlier t<\/span>his year<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>imes article<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>one of a series of hit-pieces<\/span>\u00a0by regime<\/span>–<\/span>friend<\/span>ly\u00a0<\/span>journalists who\u00a0<\/span>choose to\u00a0<\/span>break journalism\u00a0<\/span>ethics\u00a0<\/span>and moral\u00a0<\/span>principles by<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>r<\/span>egurgitating the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs\u2019\u00a0<\/span>four<\/span>-decade<\/span>–<\/span>long<\/span>\u00a0false allegations against the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>D<\/span>o you tell your sexual thoughts to your commander?<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Do you tell your secrets to your commander?<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Do you think an authoritarian organization such as the MEK can bring democracy to Iran?<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>One of your friends has already told us he confesses his sexual thoughts to his commanders. Do\u00a0<\/span>you?<\/span>\u201d wrote Mr.\u00a0<\/span>Shafaie<\/span>, comparing the questions\u00a0<\/span>posed to him\u00a0<\/span>by the NY<\/span>Times\u00a0<\/span>journalist\u00a0<\/span>with those of the mullahs\u2019 interrogators.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Don\u2019t be mistaken. This is not an episode of\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Law & Order.<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0They are actual questions a New York Times correspondent, Patrick Kingsley, posed to me in January when he visited Ashraf-3, northwest of Tirana, the Albanian capital, where thousands of members of the Iranian opposition have been residing since 2016, following attempts by Tehran to wipe us out when we lived in Iraq<\/span>,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I couldn\u2019t help but find the Times\u2019 approach an eerie reminder of the methods of the regime\u2019s interrogators. When they arrested two of my friends, they tortured them to get information about other resistance members. They told one of them that his friend had already given all his information, so he too should give information about the others<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>rote<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>\u00a0member.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Referring to his personal history and the martyrdom of his entire family Mohammad\u00a0<\/span>Shafa<\/span>e<\/span>i<\/span>\u00a0wrote: \u201c<\/span>I was 8-years-old when the regime executed six members of my family in 1981 because they supported the opposition\u00a0<\/span>Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK)<\/span><\/a>. Those six were my dad, Dr.\u00a0<\/span>Morteza<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Shafaei<\/span>, my mom, two brothers (one was only 16), my sister and my brother-in-law. After escaping Iran, I moved to the U.S. and resided in Greensboro, North Carolina. I was an A-plus pre-med student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with lots of opportunities before me. While I had a prosperous life, I decided to devote it to bringing freedom for my people in Iran.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While stressing the freedom of choice that all the MEK members ha<\/span>d and still have in struggling against the clerical regime in\u00a0<\/span>Iran, Mohammad shared h<\/span>is process of choosing the<\/span>\u00a0struggle for freedom in the MEK<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0ranks. He wrote<\/span>: \u201c<\/span>I left my studies unfinished to join the Iranian resistance in 1995. The Times\u2019 25-minute interview with me was more like an interrogation and prosecution, full of hurtful allegations against me and my beliefs, and a humiliating inquisition about my personal life. I answered all the allegations; I have nothing to hide. The Times didn\u2019t bother to publish my replies and corrections. This is not surprising. While in the camp, the Times correspondent visited a museum that included, among other things, a memorial in tribute to the 1,500 Iranian protesters who were massacred by the regime in November. In its report, the Times failed to refer to this tragedy or the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands \u2013 my family included \u2014 since the mullahs took over four decades ago.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I will never forget my last moments with my mom. When\u00a0<\/span>the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0raided our home and arrested my mom, she told me that she would never be back. I later found out they took her for execution. They told my mom that if she wanted to live with me and my dad again, she must carry out a TV interview to denounce the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and her struggle for freedom. She refused and paid the price with her life<\/span>,\u201d he added, recalling his las<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0encounter with his mother.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>If the Times told my mom\u2019s story, they\u2019d probably describe her as a cold-hearted mother who didn\u2019t care about her 8-year-old boy.\u00a0 Although my mom\u2019s decision to sacrifice her life was so agonizing for me, I am very proud of her. For years, the Times has advocated a U.S. foreign policy of appeasement towards the mullahs ruling Iran. The Iranian people meanwhile demonstrated their desire for regime change in the 2018 and more recently in November 2019 and January uprisings<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Shafaie<\/span>\u00a0added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Indeed, by promoting the false notion that there is no viable alternative to the regime, and by demonizing the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>, it attempts to undermine President Donald Trump\u2019s pressure campaign on the mullahs. At best this is willful blindness to the realities on the ground in Iran. At worst, it is an egregious and hurtful kind of censorship, a distortion of truth to satisfy a political agenda in which millions of lives hang in the balance<\/span>,\u201d concluded Mohammad\u00a0<\/span>Shafa<\/span>e<\/span>i<\/span>, referring to the campaign by the regime\u2019s apologists to\u00a0<\/span>spread the false claim that\u00a0<\/span>there is no viable alternative to the mullahs<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0regime,<\/span>\u00a0intentionally dismissing\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian people\u2019s desire for freedom and democracy and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>existence of a viable alternative such as the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
