Michael McCaul (R-TX), the Homeland Security Committee Chair, Eliot Engel (D-NY), House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) ranking member and Ed Royce (R-CA), the HFAC chairman. The resolution condemns the deteriorating situation of human rights in Iran and the Iranian regime \u201cfor the 1988 massacre, and for denying the evidence of this manifest set of crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/house-concurrent-resolution\/159\/cosponsors?pageSort=lastToFirst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">H.Con.Res.159<\/a>, co-sponsored by some 50 House members, urges the United Nations \u201cto create a Commission of Inquiry to fully investigate the massacre and to gather evidence and identify the names and roles of specific perpetrators with a view towards bringing them to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The measure notes that \u201cthe massacre was carried out pursuant to a fatwa, or religious decree, issued by then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, that targeted\u2026the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK),\u201d quoting Amnesty International, \u201cbetween 27 July 1988 and the end of that year, thousands of political prisoners [in Iran], including prisoners of conscience, were executed in prisons nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While stressing, \u201cthe majority of those killed were supporters of the PMOI [MEK],\u201d the resolution emphasizes that \u201cin a recently disclosed audiotape, the late Hussein Ali Montazeri, a grand ayatollah who served as Khomeini\u2019s chief deputy, noted the regime\u2019s efforts to target the MEK and said that the 1988 mass killings were \u2018the greatest crime committed during the Islamic Republic, for which history will condemn us.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On November 27, 2016, an Iranian regime court sentenced\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/irans-prisoner-of-the-revolution-1480553317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">Ahmad Montazeri<\/a>, the 60-year-old cleric son of Ayatollah Montazeri to 21 years in prison for releasing the tapes.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from both sides of the aisle equally cosponsored the resolution, which states, \u201cthose personally responsible for these mass executions include senior officials serving in the current Government of Iran.\u201d Hassan Rouhani\u2019s Justice Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi who had earlier denied the massacre ever took place,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/human-rights\/21003-iran-justice-minister-confirms-his-role-in-mass-execution-of-political-prisoners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">boasted\u00a0<\/a>that he was \u201cproud\u201d of having carried out \u201cGod\u2019s commandment\u201d to execute MEK members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important legislation which needs to be followed up with policy steps by the U.S. Administration in standing with the victims of repression and with those who want to establish democracy in Iran,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ncrius.org\/soona-samsami.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">Soona Samsami<\/a>, the U.S. Representative of the\u00a0National Council of Resistance of Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution urges \u201cthe Administration and United States allies to publicly condemn the massacre, and pressure the Government of Iran to provide detailed information to the families of the victims about their loved ones and their final resting places.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20161209005788\/en\/Bi-Partisan-Lawmakers-Endorse-Resolution-Bring-Justice-Perpetrators\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"alternate noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20161209005788\/en\/Bi-Partisan-Lawmakers-Endorse-Resolution-Bring-Justice-Perpetrators<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bi-partisan support is growing for a U.S. House of Representatives resolution introduced by Rep.
