The\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime<\/span>\u00a0executed a juvenile offender on Tuesday, drawing immediate condemnation from United Nations special rapporteurs and other human rights defenders. The UN experts declared in a statement that they were \u201cshocked that the Iranian authorities have once again defied their international obligations\u201d by executing a person who was under the age of 18 at the time of the crime for which he was convicted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shayan<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Saeedpour<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was 17 years old when he was<\/span>\u00a0arrested for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>alleged<\/span>y<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>killing a\u00a0<\/span>man during a fight. He was initially handed a death sentence in October 2018, and the sentence was confirmed by the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Supreme<\/span>\u00a0Court in February 2019. The implementation of that sentence apparently came with little warning, as international human rights groups routinely issue public statements\u00a0in an effort to\u00a0put pressure on the judiciary when there is advanced warning of a juvenile offender\u2019s execution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Iranian<\/span>\u00a0regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0prisons have a long history of moving death row inmates into solitary confinement in preparation for their hangings, only to return them to their ordinary cells\u00a0<\/span>later on<\/span>. In some cases, prisoners have been subjected to these transfers dozens of times, as a form of psychological torture that\u00a0<\/span>leaves them constantly aware of the fact that their execution could take place at any moment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
