At least 100,000 workers in northern Iranian provinces<\/span>\u00a0have been laid off because of the coronavirus epidemic<\/a>, while 65,000 more have registered for unemployment insurance, according to the state-run\u202f<\/span>Sharq<\/span>\u202fdaily.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>April 27 report about unemployment and poor living conditions of workers, it\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>reported that this is only a portion of the true number from these provinces and that other provinces have not\u00a0<\/span>yet\u00a0<\/span>made an announcement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharq<\/span>\u202falso brought up the workers\u2019 health as a pressing issue given the recent reopening of workshops, factories, and other non-essential businesses. They stressed that 37 out of the 82 workers in the petrochemical factory of Urmia, in northwest Iran,<\/span>\u00a0who were<\/span>\u00a0tested for the coronavirus were told that they were sick. This means 45% of the workplace had\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>coronavirus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More alarming still is that the workers, because of their low income, likely did not (and still do not) have access to medical treatment. This means that they may well still be sick or that those not infected yet may be forced to choose between dying or plunging their family into debt.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As International Labor Day approaches on May 1, Iranian workers are in a situation like\u00a0<\/span>never before<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and it will likely just get worse as time moves on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not like economic hardships and a lack of response from the regime is anything new to the workers of Iran, but the regime\u2019s dire actions regarding the coronavirus crisis, which has led to the reopening of the country\u2019s economy way before the virus was in any way under control, has meant that Iranian workers are in grave danger.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The article read: \u201cIn Mazandaran (northern Iran) and according to remarks made by a local\u00a0<\/span>labor<\/span>\u00a0organization official, at least 80,000 construction workers have been laid off. Despite the government\u2019s pledges on supporting the workers in the current circumstances, these workers have yet to receive a<\/span>ny<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>money<\/span>. Iran\u2019s workers will be facing even more difficult circumstances before the upcoming International Labor Day.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, over 300 workers from the Iran\u00a0<\/span>Zarrin<\/span>\u00a0plates factory were made unemployed because the goods are not selling right now, possibly because of store closures and possibly because of an impending recession, and the warehouses are full of products with nowhere else to store it. These 300+ people are in danger of losing their jobs permanently and have registered to receive unemployment insurance\/benefits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This\u00a0<\/span>lackluster<\/span>\u00a0response to the problems of working-class Iranians will result in additional social unrest and dissent against the mullahs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian economy, due to the regime\u2019s institutionalized corruption<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>is not able to be at the service of\u00a0<\/span>the Iranian workers. The regime\u2019s officials have been plundering people\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0wealth for terrorism, and their\u00a0<\/span>economy is based on this.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The r<\/span>egime\u2019s faction<\/span>s, despite their infightings that are over more<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>share of power, follow the same economic pattern for plundering people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard, the state-run Jahan-e\u00a0<\/span>Sanat<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>in an\u00a0<\/span>article<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on April 25 wrote: \u201cOu<\/span>r<\/span>\u00a0economy is a mandatory economy. The root of many of our pro<\/span>blems and incessant economic challenges is\u00a0<\/span>our economy\u2019s mandatory nature. In this regard, there\u00a0<\/span>is no difference between governments<\/span>. The difference is in the method of issuing economic orders.\u00a0<\/span>None of the governments explain about these orders, because they\u00a0<\/span>do not consider people and force them to choose these orders.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The article\u00a0<\/span>continues<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe<\/span>\u00a0economic orders are about some\u00a0<\/span>issue<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in wh<\/span>ich\u00a0<\/span>the government has some interests<\/span>. T<\/span>hey do not care about people\u2019s benefits.<\/span>\u00a0But within the last four decades, each government that came\u00a0<\/span>to power\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>previously\u00a0<\/span>so-called legalized by passing a law at the parliament.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0For example, the ninth government after\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>revolution\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>Mahmoud Ahmadinejad\u2019s government<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0while citing\u00a0<\/span>the \u201cTargeted Subsidies Act\u201d,\u00a0<\/span>increased the fuel and bread prices\u00a0<\/span>overnight<\/span>\u00a0and at the same time\u00a0<\/span>wired 45<\/span>,000<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>toman<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0($45 at that time)\u00a0<\/span>as a cash subsidy\u00a0<\/span>to all Iranian citizens\u2019 account. In other words, with an order, they put 45<\/span>,000<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>toman<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>people\u2019s pockets\u00a0<\/span>and took 400<\/span>,000<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>toman<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0($400 dollars at that time) from their other\u00a0<\/span>pockets in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>form of increasing fuel and bread prices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
