The lives of political prisoners in Iranian prisons are in danger due to the outbreak of coronavirus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Iranian regime\u2019s president, Hassan Rouhani<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on Saturday<\/span>, after months of cover-up and downplaying the coronavirus crisis in Iran, acknowledged the extent of this crisis in Iranian prisons.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In one of the prisons, one infected person entered the prison, and before they could find out, 100 people out of 120 tested positive for<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Coronavirus,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the coronavirus outbreak<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the Iranian regime\u2019s officials, particularly Rouhani,\u00a0<\/span>have tried<\/span>\u00a0to downplay\u00a0<\/span>the extent of this crisis, which has, according to the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so far claimed\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>lives of over 40,<\/a><\/span>5<\/span>00 people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian regime\u2019s general response to the coronavirus outbreak was disastrous. But its approach toward prisoners<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has resulted in massive\u00a0<\/span>infection of inmates a<\/span>nd their death.\u00a0<\/span>Instead of releasing prisoners<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the regime\u00a0<\/span>has<\/span>\u00a0been arresting political opponents and those who speak the truth about the coronavirus\u00a0<\/span>under the pretext of \u201crumor mongering.\u201d The recent arrest of two elite students\u00a0<\/span>confirms this fact that<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0mullahs are not willing to save<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0lives of the Iranian people, particularly prisoners.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>mishandling of the coronavirus outbreak\u00a0<\/span>across prisons and lack of hygienic facilities<\/span>\u00a0has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>resulted in dozen<\/span>s of<\/span>\u00a0prison riots across Iran.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>On the eve of the Persian New Year, the regime claimed to have temporarily released tens of thousands of prisoners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The prison riots in various cities across the country\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>recent arrests of their political\u00a0<\/span>opponents <\/span>undermined<\/span>\u00a0the regime\u2019s claims and indicated that the assertion was a deceptive act and the prisoners, especially political prisoners, are still in prisons in extremely dangerous conditions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, instead of helping them, the regime responded<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span> the\u00a0<\/span>prisoner’s demands <\/span>with bullets<\/span>. Those inmates who were rearrested were quickly executed.\u00a0 The regime increased its security measures in prisons<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For days, the regime denied the existence of this virus in Iran to\u00a0<\/span>increase its\u00a0<\/span>sham\u00a0<\/span>parliamentary\u00a0<\/span>elections\u2019 turnout<\/span>\u00a0that failed due to the people\u2019s general boycott.\u00a0<\/span>Documents revealed by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>which belong to Iran\u2019s National Emergency Organization, show the regime\u2019s officials were aware of\u00a0<\/span>the spread of COVID-19<\/span>\u00a0in January.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Even after acknowledging\u00a0<\/span>the existence of the coronavirus<\/span>, the regime refused to issue a quarantine\u00a0<\/span>for weeks<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and when it did, it was too late\u00a0<\/span>and did not last very long. Since this so-called\u00a0<\/span>quarantining period was not accompanied by<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>government<\/span>\u00a0support<\/span>\u00a0for the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>people,\u00a0<\/span>more<\/span>\u00a0people,\u00a0<\/span>that mostly\u00a0<\/span>have been<\/span>\u00a0grappling with poverty due to the regime\u2019s institutionalized corruption and wrong economic policies<\/span>, joined the army of hungries. This <\/span>could have possibly\u00a0<\/span>led to\u00a0<\/span>a nationwide uprising and rebellion<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>So,<\/span>\u00a0the regime ordered people back to work to avoid\u00a0<\/span>this uprising for the time being and\u00a0<\/span>saving\u00a0<\/span>its economy<\/span>\u00a0at the cost of people\u2019s lives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Mrs. Maryam\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Rajavi<\/span>, the NCRI\u2019s<\/a> President-elect<\/span>\u00a0has said<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he international community, the UN Secretary-General, the High Commissioner<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>Human<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Right<\/span>s<\/span>, Human Rights\u00a0<\/span>Council,\u00a0<\/span>and <\/span>the UN\u00a0<\/span>special\u00a0<\/span>rapporteurs\u00a0<\/span>should<\/span>\u00a0immediately\u00a0<\/span>intervene to stop the executions, secur<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0the prisoners\u2019 release and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Iran\u2019s prisons.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

I urge the international community, the UN Secretary General, the #HumanRights<\/a> High Commissioner and Council, & the UN rapporteurs to immediately intervene to stop the executions, securing the prisoners\u2019 release and preventing a humanitarian catastrophe in #Iran<\/a>\u2019s prisons.<\/p>\n
