Fearing the restive Iranian society and a nationwide uprising, the Iranian regime, instead of helping people amid the coronavirus outbreak<\/span>, is increasing its suppressive measures only to prolong its rule.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>an interview<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with the state-run news agency IRNA,\u00a0<\/span>Revolutionary Guards\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>IRGC<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0Brigadier General Hassan\u00a0<\/span>Karami<\/span>, Commander of the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Anti-riot Unit\u00a0<\/span>tasked with<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>uppression of the\u00a0<\/span>u<\/span>prising, announced the readiness of this force to suppress\u00a0<\/span>possible<\/span>\u00a0protests in 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Anti-riot unit of the Iranian regime’s repressive\u00a0<\/span>police\u00a0<\/span>force is tasked with suppressing popular uprisings and widespread protests with the cooperation of\u00a0<\/span>Basij<\/span>\u00a0militia mercenaries and IRGC\u00a0<\/span>Anti-riot<\/span>\u00a0forces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this interview, IRGC Brigadier General Hassan\u00a0<\/span>Karami<\/span>\u00a0said that in 2020, “special attention” had been paid to the infrastructure of the anti-riot force and its equipment and that this “unparalleled” support had increased the force’s responsibility. “2020 is the unique year for the Special Forces in terms of infrastructure and equipment,” he said. “The support of the Anti-riot unit is excellent, and this unit\u00a0<\/span>is well<\/span>\u00a0provide<\/span>d with<\/span>\u00a0the equipment and facilities<\/span>. This unit also enjoys vast\u00a0<\/span>support in<\/span>\u00a0the field of infrastructure in the country, including the completion and development of barracks, tools and training facilities required by barracks<\/span>, and having access to<\/span>\u00a0the necessary specialized equipment and manpower.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hassan\u00a0<\/span>Karami<\/span>\u00a0said that in all the years that he has been in the Anti-riot unit for suppressing the protests of the Iranian people, this repressive force has neve<\/span>r received such an important\u00a0<\/span>attention as<\/span>\u00a0it ha<\/span>s received<\/span>\u00a0in 2020<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main question is what is the reason for this statement of readiness to suppress the protests of the Iranian people amid the coronavirus\u00a0<\/span>crisis\u00a0<\/span>in the country? Another question is why the regime<\/span>\u2019s officials, while\u00a0<\/span>this year<\/span>\u00a0are grappling with\u00a0<\/span>economic hardships, and experienc<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0their worst e<\/span>conomic situation, have paid\u00a0<\/span>attention and\u00a0<\/span>resources for<\/span>\u00a0equipping the Anti-riot units?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The current economic situation in Iran,\u00a0<\/span>due to the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s corruption, has increased the pressure on the Iranian people. The coronavirus outbreak, and the regime\u2019s cover-up<\/span>\u00a0which has resulted in over 41,000 death<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>rapid spread of the virus across the country<\/span>\u00a0has increased people\u2019s dissatisfaction.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime refused to quarantine the cities at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, and when it\u00a0<\/span>reluctantly<\/span>\u00a0did,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs\u2019 regime refused to financially back the Iranian people. Therefore, more people quickly joined the army of\u00a0<\/span>hungries,<\/span>\u00a0and this could have resulted\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0massive protests.\u00a0<\/span>So,<\/span>\u00a0the regime forced people back to work amid the coronavirus outbreak.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s president Hassan Rouhani\u2019s remarks in this regard elucidates the situation: \u201cThe coronavirus is a disease, yet unemployment is a great danger. The coronavirus death should not be contained while there will be deaths due to poverty and unemployment.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahmad\u202f<\/span>Naderi<\/span>, one of the regime\u2019s officials told the state-run\u202f<\/span>Resalat<\/span>\u202fdaily on March 7:\u202f\u201cI am worried about the social and security outcome of this crisis.\u202fSoon, rebellions, much larger\u202fthan\u202fthe ones in 2018 and 2019 and certainly much larger\u202fthan\u202fthe ones in\u202fthe 1990s,\u202fwill happen.\u201d\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent months, many economists close to the regime have warned of a new round of protests and popular uprisings due to growing poverty, unemployment,\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s institution<\/span>alized\u00a0<\/span>corruption and its plundering of national wealth for funding its illicit activities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the latest example of these warnings, 50 regime economists issued a letter to\u00a0<\/span>the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>president Hassan<\/span>\u00a0Rouhani,\u00a0<\/span>predicting that “there is a possibility of unrest and unhappiness at the outskirts of cities in the second half of 2020 and 2021.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They announced the reason for the riots\u00a0<\/span>to be\u00a0<\/span>“the escalation of the recession,\u00a0<\/span>the increasing of unemployment<\/span>, poverty, government budget deficits<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0inflation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>rate,<\/span>”\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>suggested to\u00a0<\/span>Hassan Rouhani\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>package of measures.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Monday, the state-run daily\u202f<\/span>Sharq<\/span>\u202fwrote:\u202f\u201cIt is predicted that between 2.8 and 6.4 million people will lose their jobs due to the Coronavirus crisis<\/a>, of which 70% do not have any insurance coverage \u2026 Workers, laborers, and self-employed\u202fpeople\u202fwill suffer the most. Most of them will be pushed below the poverty line, and if the government does not offer effective support, the unemployment crisis and poverty will turn into other issues.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, the regime\u2019s suppressive forces are\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>full alert to confront possible social outrage.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The commander of the Anti-riot unit of the repressive police force also called the force’s record in suppressing the protests of December 2017-January 2018 and November 2019 “acceptable” and said that “advanced equipment” would deal with this year’s riots. He said: “Due to the\u00a0<\/span>[forces]\u00a0<\/span>acceptable record in December 2017-January 2018 and November 2019 and other incidents, including the issue of water in Isfahan province, the Special Unit has become more determined to implement deterrent strategies and use advanced equipment to control riots.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>addition,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>IRGC Brigadier General Hassan\u00a0<\/span>Karami<\/span>\u00a0described the participants in the December 2017-January 2018 protests as “enemies” and said they were using the experience of repression in the uprising to prepare for new riots.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It should be noted that in December 2017-January 2018, nationwide\u00a0<\/span>Iran protests<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sparked because of to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>high prices and\u00a0<\/span>the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>economic corruption, but quickly\u00a0<\/span>turned<\/span>\u00a0political\u00a0<\/span>with people targeting\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime in its entirety in their slogans<\/span>. According<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0the spokesman of Rouhani’s government, Ali\u00a0<\/span>Rabiee<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the Iran protests\u00a0<\/span>spread to 160 cities in Iran.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Major\u00a0<\/span>Iran protests<\/span><\/a>\u00a0erupted in November 2019 triggering the greatest existential crisis in the regime\u2019s 40-year history. Protesters took to the streets in at least 191 cities calling for regime change. The regime resorted to brute repression, killing at least 1500 protesters and arresting thousands more. It also shut down Iran\u2019s internet completely for a week, blocking images of the protests from reaching the outside world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian regime used weapons, ammunition, and military force to suppress the uprisings of 2017-2019. The videos and many statements of witnesses at the scene of the uprisings confirm this issue and the inhumane crimes of the Iranian regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another essential question is whether the<\/span>\u00a0Iranian regime\u00a0<\/span>could control<\/span>\u00a0the restive Iranian society\u00a0<\/span>and prevent further protests\u00a0<\/span>by resorting to violence and killing people and equipping the repressive forces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime is engulfed with unprecedented<\/span>\u00a0political, social, and economic crises,<\/span>\u00a0particularly amid the coronavirus outbreak,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the widespread dissatisfaction and anger of various segments of the Iranian people against the regime have reached its peak.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The major\u00a0<\/span>critical factor\u00a0<\/span>in the regime\u2019s fear\u00a0<\/span>is the existence of organized and nationwide resistance in Iran, and the\u00a0<\/span>People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or\u00a0<\/span>MEK)\u00a0<\/span>Resistance<\/span>\u00a0Units<\/span><\/a>\u00a0also play a leading role in this organized resistance. Therefore, in such a situation, such statements by the repressive agents of the regime will not cure any pain of the mullahs’ regime. These horrific statements are a testament to the regime’s growing weakness and appalling fear of its inevitable fate,\u00a0<\/span>and some desperate efforts to\u00a0<\/span>prevent its inevitable downfall.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
