Konarak ship<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On Monday, an Iranian regime\u2019s ship was drowned by a missile fired from another ship during a Naval Maneuver<\/span>, killing at least 20 crew\u00a0<\/span>members<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Initial reports in Iranian state media indicated that the\u00a0<\/span>Konarak<\/span>\u00a0had been tasked with placing targets in the\u00a0<\/span>water but<\/span>\u00a0moved too close to one of those targets as the\u00a0<\/span>Jamaran<\/span>, which later shot\u00a0<\/span>Konarak<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0was proceeding with the exercise. However, these reports were soon revised with more vague terms<\/span>, to the extent that references to missiles were removed entirely. State media evidently moved quickly into a sort of \u201cdamage control\u201d mode, placing more emphasis on\u00a0<\/span>what they call<\/span>\u00a0\u201crumors\u201d than on providing a thorough and accurate account of the incident.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Toward that end, television broadcasts made a point of showing distant shots of the\u00a0<\/span>Konarak<\/span>\u00a0at the port of\u00a0<\/span>Jask<\/span>, in order to counter any notion that the ship had been sunk in the incident. The\u00a0<\/span>regime<\/span>\u00a0also promptly held a funeral for the victims on Tuesday, after Khamenei declared the 19 men \u201cmartyrs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>This deceptive act is meant to somehow cover-up this mess, which debunks regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>claims of having a powerful Navy and wasting national\u2019s wealth for it. On the other hand, Khamenei tries to shift the blame on some hollow enemies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Khamenei wields ultimate authority over all matters of state\u00a0<\/span>in Iran<\/span>, and questioning his judgement is considered taboo within the clerical regime. Any public commentary deemed \u201cinsulting\u201d to the supreme leader can be punished with multi-year prison sentences, and this fact is routinely exploited by the judiciary to secure conviction of political prisoners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of holding Khamenei to\u00a0account,\u00a0 there\u00a0have been sudden\u00a0<\/span>changes in reporting on the naval incident which extended beyond the initial references to an accident involvement \u201cmissiles\u201d and human error.\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0army\u00a0<\/span>desperately tried<\/span>\u00a0to counter the\u00a0<\/span>truth<\/span>\u00a0on Tuesday by posting a video to an affiliated news website, declaring that a homing device had malfunctioned, making the accident a technical issue.<\/span>\u00a0The video even floated the idea that this could have been the result of \u201celectronic warfare by the enemy,\u201d in reference to the US, though of course it cited no evidence to support this.<\/span>\u00a0But these claims would not deceive Iranian people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0quick announcement of a technical malfunction is reminiscent of the January incident in which a missile defense system operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps caused the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines flight that was departing Tehran, killing all 176 people on board.\u00a0<\/span>Regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0efforts to deny responsibility lasted only about three days before satellite images and on-the-ground video helped to prove that two missiles had in<\/span>deed struck the airliner. After the regime\u2019s attempted deception was revealed, protests erupted on university campuses and in various other locations across more than a dozen provinces, marking a new upsurge in anti-government sentiment following a nationwide uprising two months earlier.<\/span>\u00a0These protests quickly turned political with people unanimously demanding regime change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When, in March,\u00a0<\/span>Iran\u00a0<\/span>found itself in the grips of a severe coronavirus outbreak<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0think tank\u00a0<\/span>close to Khamenei faction\u00a0<\/span>published an analysis of the situation which cited the Ukraine Airlines incident as one prominent reason why the public was unlikely to trust state media reports about\u00a0<\/span>the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>he regime has\u00a0<\/span>ever since\u00a0<\/span>continued to use state media outlets as a conduit for disinformation during the crisis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to those outlets, Iran has seen fewer than 7,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus so far<\/span>, Yet<\/span>\u00a0the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(NCRI)<\/span>\u00a0puts the figure at nearly 41,<\/span>5<\/span>00.\u00a0<\/span>Regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0efforts at concealing these alternative estimates include the arrest of various individuals, including doctors and nurses, who have been accused of \u201crumor mongering\u201d<\/span>\u00a0or rather telling the truth<\/span>\u00a0about the pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hossein\u00a0<\/span>Ashtari<\/span>, the head of\u00a0<\/span>regime<\/span>\u2019s federal police force,\u00a0<\/span>announced on May 9 that 320 were facing prosecution for \u201cdisrupting public opinion\u201d on this matter. He also declared that the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Cyber Police had identified and \u201cdealt decisively\u201d with 1,300 websites that had played a role in contradicting the regime\u2019s official narratives. Even before this,\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0censorship was already among the most severe in the world, and during the November uprising the entire country\u2019s online access was severed as part of the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0crackdown on dissent.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As with the\u00a0<\/span>recent naval incident<\/span>, the regime\u2019s suppression of accurate information about coronavirus is arguably related to a preoccupation with justifying positions that have been taken in advance by\u00a0<\/span>Khamenei<\/span>. Presently,\u00a0<\/span>regime<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0implementing plans to reopen the economy and\u00a0<\/span>forcing people back to work<\/span>,\u00a0despite the fact that\u00a0the coronavirus outbreak is by no means under control. This course of action began on April 11<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s cover-up of an inevitable raise of the coronavirus death and infection following the criminal decision of sending people back to work,<\/span>\u00a0was a clear sign that the re-opening policy had been set by the regime\u2019s highest authority. This interpretation is further\u00a0<\/span>supported<\/span>\u00a0by statements that have followed spikes in Covid-19 infection rates during the re-opening.\u00a0<\/span>Yet instead of helping people the regime\u2019s officials are trying to blame them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a> said: \u201c<\/span>For Khamenei and Rouhani, the lives and well-being of the people are worthless. They only want to protect their regime from the threat of uprising. The criminal decision to send people to work is a crime against humanity and will cause countless number of\u00a0victims\u00a0 of\u00a0the COVID-19 in Iran.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
