On Sunday, May 17, 2020, the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian\u00a0<\/span>regime’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei held a video conference with a group of paramilitary Basij forces at the universities. In the conference, in an unprecedented and astonishing way, Khamenei spoke about the main issues that the regime is facing in Iran. Khamenei\u2019s speech was focused on two main issues.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He lamented that he desired a young Hezbollah government, with the eliminated terrorist\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>e<\/span>volutionary<\/span>\u00a0Guards<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(IRGC)\u00a0<\/span>Quds Force<\/span><\/a>\u00a0commander\u00a0<\/span>Qassem<\/span>\u00a0Soleimani<\/span><\/a>\u00a0being the role model, who in Khamenei\u2019s words, despite being 60 years old, did what young people do. He said he always thinks about him. Subsequently, a member of the regime\u2019s parliament called for Rouhani\u2019s resignation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, since Khamenei has lost his clout, the following day\u00a0<\/span>the regime\u2019s President\u00a0<\/span>Hassan Rouhani without directly mentioning Khamenei\u2019s remarks suggested\u00a0<\/span>that for\u00a0<\/span>the country to survive<\/span>, it<\/span>\u00a0needs\u00a0<\/span>several<\/span>\u00a0political parties to run the country intermittently.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another aspect of Khamenei\u2019s remarks was his expression of concern over the role and influence of the\u00a0<\/span>People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>MEK)<\/span><\/a>, among young people since the outset of the anti-monarchic revolution. Refusing to mention the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by name due to his fears of drawing more direct attention to\u00a0<\/span>the group<\/span>, he talked about young Muslims who joined the rank<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of a group with eclectic ideology (a term used by the regime to demonize the MEK) after the fall of the\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>hah and then fought against the regime. His concern, though<\/span>\u00a0expressed implicitly, was his fear of the new generation being attracted\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 5, the Judiciary Spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili announced the arrest of two elite, award-winning students because of their links to the MEK. This caused a great deal of turmoil within the regime and political circles on the margins of the regime, which expressed concern about the youths\u2019 desire to join the ranks of the MEK. The same day, the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>\u00a0announced the names and pictures of 18 others arrested and imprisoned by the regime for their political activities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>January 2018 and November 2019 uprisings, and especially during the past months, state-run media outlets and regime officials have increasingly talked about the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a> and its extraordinary growth among the youth, especially students. But the acknowledgment of this fact by the supreme leader reflects its high importance and the danger the MEK imposes to the regime.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone should be careful about the enemy recruiting members of our young society\u2026\u201d Khamenei said. He also by referring to the explosive situation of the society, warned the\u00a0<\/span>Basij<\/span>\u00a0forces to be vigilant.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou should not allow the enemy to take advantage of your protests. They are waiting to use any such opportunity\u2026 The enemy will portray your protests over whatever subject as dissent against the state, and provide such an image to their viewers\u2026 Be careful of those who take advantage of these protests to pursue their objectives against the state,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTime and again I have suggested to various officials to go and visit our universities and talk with the students. However, in response they say whenever we do go, the students\u2019 objectives are not to be informed about the country\u2019s issues<\/span>. I<\/span>n fact, they are interested in tainting the state\u2019s image. That is why officials don\u2019t pay visits to our universities. I am asking you, please, do not prevent an atmosphere of dialogue,\u201d Khamenei said by referring to university students<\/span>\u2019\u00a0<\/span>widespread hatred<\/span>\u00a0toward regime authorities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He warned against the influence of the enemies on the youth and said: “Everyone has to pay attention to the fact that they are also working on our young people. They are also trying to take advantage of our youth. They are pursuing this objective and are planning for it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The following day<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0on May 18,\u00a0<\/span>Adyan<\/span>\u00a0News, a state-controlled website<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0discuss<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0Khamenei\u2019s concern\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>unveiled who the enemy is.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the same enemy that in the past four decades<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0by hurling poisonous spears towards the establishment, ha<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>not missed even a second in its animosity towards the system \u2026this is the same enemy that in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Spring of 1981, Khomeini, with his profound knowledge of them said \u2018if\u00a0<\/span>I thought<\/span>\u00a0there was one<\/span>\u00a0in a thousand<\/span>\u00a0chance that you would relinquish from what you are doing, I would be willing to agree with you\u2026\u2019 \u2026yes, this enemy is the MEK and its leader\u00a0<\/span>Masoud\u00a0<\/span>Rajavi<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Khamenei further said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cExpand your ranks through new recruits. Don\u2019t quickly push people off due to various disagreements\u2026 of course, I don\u2019t mean the [MEK<\/a>]. I mean try to recruit those who may have slightly different viewpoints. However, I don\u2019t advise appeasing people who don\u2019t believe in our revolution.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now the question is why Khamenei is compelled to acknowledge the realities that were taboo for years in the regime? Why is<\/span>\u00a0he<\/span>\u00a0so terrified and calling on his entire regime to mobilize against this enemy and be\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>high alert?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer is the extremely shaky and fragile conditions of the regime, on the one hand, and on the other hand,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>widespread support for the MEK and their path among the youth.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A b<\/span>ankrupt economy, high rate of unemployment, poverty, regional and international isolation of the regime, growing cris<\/span>e<\/span>s within the regime, and explosive situation of the society combined with the growing tendency of the youth to support the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>\u00a0ha<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0forced Khamenei to point to the need for a \u201cyoung Hezbollah government<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But would these desparate<\/span>\u00a0initiatives of the regime\u2019s supreme leader buy time for the regime or would\u00a0<\/span>they\u00a0<\/span>sink it more in the quagmire of overthrow?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
