Amnesty International: Iran- Details released of 304 deaths during protests in November 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>statement<\/span><\/a>\u00a0published on Wednesday, Amnesty International once again highlighted and condemned the Iranian regime\u2019s use of lethal force in dealing with\u00a0<\/span>protesters,<\/span>\u00a0which has resulted in ma<\/span>ss murder, arrest and disappearance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In almost all protests that took place between 15 and 19 November, there is no evidence that people were in possession of firearms or that they posed an imminent threat to life that would have warranted the use of lethal force, according to research, including video analysis, conducted by Amnesty International. The organization is aware of two exceptions in one city on 18 November where gunfire was exchanged between protesters and security forces<\/span>,\u201d read<\/span>\u00a0the Amnesty report.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that so many people were shot while posing no threat whatsoever shows the sheer ruthlessness of the security forces\u2019 unlawful killing spree,\u201d said Philip Luther, Amnesty International\u2019s Research and Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSix months later, the devastated families of victims continue their struggle for truth and justice while facing intense harassment and intimidation from the authorities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe prevailing impunity afforded to the security forces allows the recurrence of lethal force to crush dissent. In the absence of any meaningful prospect for accountability at the national level, we reiterate our call to members of the UN Human Rights Council to mandate an inquiry into the killings, and identify pathways for truth, justice and reparations<\/span>,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>According to information gathered by Amnesty International, in all but four cases the victims were shot dead by Iranian security forces \u2013 including members of the Revolutionary Guards, paramilitary\u00a0<\/span>Basij<\/span>\u00a0forces and the police \u2013 firing live ammunition, often at the head or torso, indicating that they were shooting to kill. Of the remaining four victims, two reportedly suffered fatal head injuries after being beaten by members of the security forces. Another two were recorded as having suffocated from tear gas<\/span>,\u201d read the report.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0<\/span>People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq, or MEK)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0<\/span>nationwide Iran protests<\/span><\/a>, the Iranian regime\u2019s security forces<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>the direct\u00a0<\/span>order\u00a0<\/span>of supreme leader Ali Khamenei, killed at\u00a0<\/span>least 1500<\/span><\/a>\u00a0protesters<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0arrested over 12,000. The Iran protests<\/span>, which<\/span>\u00a0erupted after the sudden gas price hike,<\/span>\u00a0continued for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>days, with hundreds of thousands of people identifying the mullahs\u2019 regime as the root of all economic hardships and demanding regime change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The nationwide Iran protests, which shock the regime\u2019s foundation, clearly showed the Iranian people\u2019s desire for regime change\u00a0<\/span>and portray<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0the Iranian society\u2019s restiveness. Fearing his regime\u2019s overthrow, Khamenei ordered a massive crackdown, killing thousands of people.\u00a0<\/span>The regime has so far refused to\u00a0<\/span>announce<\/span>\u00a0the number of\u00a0<\/span>deaths, fearing another uprising.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This uprising was a turning point<\/span>\u00a0for the regime and the Iranian people.\u00a0<\/span>The nationwide Iran protests were followed by the second wave<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0protests in January against the regime\u2019s shooting down\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>Ukrainian passenger jet<\/span><\/a>. The conflict between\u00a0<\/span>Iran\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>people and the regime reached its height during the regime\u2019s sham parliamentary elections, which\u00a0<\/span>faced an unprecedented general boycott. Since the Iran protest<\/span>s<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>through\u00a0<\/span>killing\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0deception, the regime tries to prevent another uprising, since surely the next uprising will result in its downfall.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
