OIAC 2020, virtual conference – U.S. May 21, 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Organization of\u00a0<\/span>Iranian-American<\/span>\u00a0Communities (OIAC<\/a>) in the United States held a virtual conference<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>titled \u201cIran: Global Threat, Domestic Repression, Prospects for Change,\u201d on Thursday.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Member<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian American Communities and supporters of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran<\/a> (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq, or MEK<\/a>)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>joined this conference from 1,000\u00a0<\/span>locations from 40 states.\u00a0<\/span>This event was also attended by American renowned politicians<\/span>, including former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security<\/span>\u00a0Tom Ridge<\/span>, former U.S. Senator Robert\u00a0<\/span>Torricelli<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and former U.S. envoy to the UN Human Rights Commission\u00a0<\/span>Ambassador\u00a0<\/span>Ken Blackwell.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The participants of this conference condemned the regime\u2019s inaction and cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak\u00a0<\/span>which has, according to the MEK,\u00a0<\/span>led to\u00a0<\/span>over 44,300 people\u00a0<\/span>losing\u00a0<\/span>their lives.\u00a0<\/span>They also elaborated<\/span>\u00a0on<\/span>\u00a0the issue of the Iranian society\u2019s restiveness,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s domestic and international\u00a0<\/span>crises,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>the Iranian Resistance<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0role in leading\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>people\u2019s uprising toward freedom and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs\u2019 downfall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants of this conference\u00a0<\/span>while supporting the U.S. maximum pressure campaign called for further pressure on the Iranian regime and a joint international effort to recognize the<\/span>\u00a0Iranian people\u2019s right to resistance and overthrow the religious dictatorship and the need to end the appeasement policy toward the mullahs\u2019 regime.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This event was moderated\u00a0<\/span>by Dr. Ramesh\u00a0<\/span>Sepeherrad<\/span>, an OIAC <\/a>Advisory Board member<\/span>. She described OIAC as\u00a0<\/span>\u201cas eager as ever and proud\u201d to continue its efforts for a free Iran, and\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>in the current circumstances would do so in person or virtually<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe more the world learns of the commitment, the passion, and the courage of the freedom fighters of Iran, the more and more the world embraces their cause as its own. And\u00a0<\/span>that is<\/span>\u00a0very, very importan<\/span>t<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>aid Secretary Ridge.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expressing\u00a0<\/span>his support\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>the MEK<\/a> and the Iranian Resistance, particularly opposition leader Mrs. Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, Sen. Torricelli said:\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>At the moment, only Mrs. Rajavi and the MEK is in communication with \u2026 the Western world. Only the MEK<\/a> has the people inside Iran in the resistance groups who can combine and support, and resources in the West, and the people on the ground in Iran<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kenneth Blackwell, the former U.S. Ambassador to the UN Commission on Human Rights said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe Trump administration has committed to an all-out government approach to pushing back against a regime that is at the epicenter of international terrorism and disregard for human rights.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms.\u00a0<\/span>Soona<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Samsami<\/span><\/a>, the U.S. Representative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a>, joined the conference from Washington, DC<\/span>. She<\/span>\u00a0told the conference: \u201cThere is a single solution for<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0coronavirus, for poverty, for oppression, for terrorism, and for Tehran\u2019s global threat.\u00a0 That solution is overthrowing the mullahs\u2019 religious dictatorship in its entirety by the people of Iran. The international community should stand on the side of the Iranian people and their resistance. The world will be a safer place with a free Iran.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0<\/span>Aref<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Alvandi<\/span>, the community rep from Maryland, emphasized<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cOur message is that we stand with millions of Iranians protesting the regime of the mullahs as they\u00a0<\/span>shout,<\/span>\u00a0\u2018down with Khamenei, down with Rouhani.\u2019\u201d He paid tribute to the more than 1,500 people massacred in two major uprisings in the last several months, adding<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe days of this regime are numbered. No one better than the mullahs\u00a0<\/span>gets<\/span>\u00a0this message loud and clear. \u2026\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>e call on our policymakers to continue to stand with the people of Iran and keep the maximum pressure on this regime.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0<\/span>Afsaneh<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Maghsoudi<\/span>, the representative of the Iranian American Cultural Society of Michigan, warned<\/span>:<\/span> \u201cThe mullahs\u2019 domestic repression, terrorism, and nuclear expansion has a new tool, and that is COVID-19. <\/span>[Foreign Minister Mohammad\u00a0Javad]\u00a0<\/span>Zarif<\/a> is using it to lobby and get sympathy for his dying regime. Rouhani is using it to distract the public from his utter failure. Khamenei is using it as a strategy to give his regime a lifeline. The Revolutionary Guards are using it for repression.\u201d She stressed that \u201cany sanctions relief for the regime under the cover of helping the victims of the pandemic is a lie\u2026 Medical assistance should go directly to the people.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
