United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo,\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>n Wednesday\u00a0<\/span>announced\u00a0<\/span>in a press release<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>he has ended the sanction<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0wai<\/span>v<\/span>er related to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with world powers\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/span>will be effective in 60 days.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Uni<\/span>ted States withdrew from this accord<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ction or JCPOA, in 2018, citing<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0regime\u2019s malign behavior<\/span>. Yet, there were some sanction<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>waivers<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Today, I am announcing the end of the sanctions waiver covering all remaining JCPOA-originating nuclear projects in Iran \u2013 the Arak reactor conversion, the provision of enriched uranium for the Tehran Research Reactor, and the export of Iran\u2019s spent and scrap research reactor fuel. The sanctions waiver covering these activities will end following a final, 60-day wind-down period allowing companies and entities involved in these activities to cease their operations.<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>said\u00a0<\/span>Secretary Pompeo.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I am also announcing the designation of Majid\u00a0<\/span>Agha\u2019i<\/span> and Amjad Sazgar pursuant to E.O. 13382 for engaging or attempting to engage in activities that have materially contributed to, or pose a risk of materially contributing to, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Sazgar is the Managing Director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran entity responsible for the industrial-scale production of uranium enrichment gas centrifuge machines. In 2019, Sazgar managed and supervised the installation of centrifuges at Iran\u2019s Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant. Through these activities, Sazgar has contributed to Iran\u2019s continued provocative and destabilizing expansion of its nuclear capabilities.\u00a0<\/span>Agha\u2019i<\/span>\u00a0has also been centrally involved in Iran\u2019s uranium enrichment centrifuge\u00a0<\/span>operations, and<\/span>\u00a0is a manager in the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran subsidiary responsible for research and development of advanced centrifuges.<\/span>,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iranian regime has continued its nuclear brinkmanship by expanding proliferation-sensitive activities. These escalatory actions are <\/span>unacceptable<\/span>\u00a0and I cannot justify renewing the waiver for these JCPOA-related activities as a result. The regime\u2019s nuclear extortion will lead to increased pressure on Iran and further isolate the regime from the international community. Moreover, Iran\u2019s nuclear personnel need to make a choice \u2013 work for Iranian proliferation organizations and risk being sanctioned or put their skills to work for the Iranian people in pursuits outside of the proliferation realm,\u201d added Secretary Pompeo.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Later<\/span>, during the State Department’s daily\u00a0<\/a><\/span>briefing<\/span>, Brian Hook, the U.S. Special Representative for Iran<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0said:\u00a0<\/span>“Secretary Pompeo terminated the nuclear waiver for three remaining Iran nuclear-related projects.\u00a0 This includes the Arak reactor conversion, the provision of enriched uranium for the Tehran research reactor, and the export of Iran-spent and scrap research reactor fuel.\u00a0 The decision will take effect after a 60-day wind-down<\/span>.<\/span>“<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are taking these actions now because the regime continues to use its nuclear program to extort the international community. The Iranian regime\u2019s threats are designed to intimidate nations into accepting Iran\u2019s usual violent behavior for fear of something worse.\u00a0 We refuse to play by Iran\u2019s rules,” said Ambassador Hook.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While referring to the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>economy<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> devastation due to the regime’s policy of pursuing a nuclear bomb and wasting the national wealth, Ambassador Hook said Iran\u2019s economy is especially grim because of the autocratic rule of the ayatollahs has proven to be an economic catastrophe for the Iranian people.\u00a0 Exports are down, the economy is in deep contraction, the budget is facing unprecedented pressures\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>government\u00a0<\/span>cannot fix, and access to foreign reserves is minimal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard, Mr. Alireza Jafarzadeh<\/a>, deputy director of the U.S.\u00a0<\/span>Representative Office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI-US<\/a>)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0wrote on\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>witter: \u201c<\/span>Long overdue and a commendable decision to deprive the Iranian regime of undue resources which the mullahs used to further enhance their nuclear weapons program, empower their proxies in the region, and suppress the Iranian people.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian regime used the JCPOA and the western governments\u2019 policy of appeasement to\u00a0<\/span>increase its meddling in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The NCRI, using the information obtained by the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0stared a campaign in 2002 to prevent\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>aggressive, virulently sectarian and repressive religious fascism from obtaining nuclear weapons capability, and saving Iran, the region, and the world from the horrors of such a scenario.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, were it not for the Iranian Resistance\u2019s stunning revelation of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Natanz uranium enrichment site and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Arak Heavy Water facility in August 2002, and subsequent revelations, which unveiled the extent to which the regime\u2019s clandestine nuclear weapons work had advanced, and which triggered inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and ensuing measures by the United Nations Security Council, the mullahs would have had the bomb by now and the fate of the Middle East and the world would not\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>en<\/span>\u00a0the same.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
