Iranian regime’s parliament<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Iranian regime\u2019s new parliament started its work\u00a0<\/span>on Wednesday\u00a0<\/span>amid the\u00a0<\/span>coronavirus outbreak<\/span><\/a>. The first public s<\/span>ession of this parliament showed the regime\u2019s increasing infighting<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>desperation,<\/span>\u00a0and deadlock.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This parliament mainly consist<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of the members of the\u00a0<\/span>faction of the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Khamenei\u00a0<\/span>massively purged the rival faction\u2019s candidates, despite their services to the clerical regime for the past 40 years<\/span>. Although th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0sham election\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>met with an unprecedented boycott<\/span>, Khamenei and his regime officials concealed COVID-19<\/span>‘s<\/span>\u00a0existence to have a larger turnout and\u00a0<\/span>turned Iran\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>to an epicenter of this virus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The question is why?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s maneuver of \u201cReformism\u201d with a president like Hassan Rouhani, who had written in his book<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0he was the first to force mandatory veiling\u00a0<\/span>in Iran, failed when people during their uprising in 2018 said, \u201creformist, hardliner, the game is over.\u201d This so-called <\/span>\u201creformist\u201d government, which is only a fa<\/span>c<\/span>ade for the regime to\u00a0<\/span>encourage the West to\u00a0<\/span>carry on the appeasement policy, again failed after the United States withdrew\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0Iran 2015 nuclear deal with world powers<\/span>, citing\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s malign behavior and\u00a0<\/span>reimpose<\/span>\u00a0sanctions<\/span>\u00a0on the regime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Khamenei, facing a restive society and international isolation,\u00a0<\/span>sees the solution in more oppression, although he clearly knows this will radicalize the Iranian society even more and\u00a0<\/span>increase the possibility of a revolution. For this\u00a0<\/span>reason,<\/span>\u00a0he now intends to use his handpicked parliament to\u00a0<\/span>make his regime unipolar, because this regime, after the events within the last two years, particularly after the Iran protests in 2019, is unable to\u00a0<\/span>handle\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>slightest opposition.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a video conference\u00a0<\/span>with his\u00a0<\/span>Basiji<\/span>\u00a0thugs posing as students on<\/span>\u00a0May 18, while expressing his fear of an uprising and the leading role played by the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK)<\/a><\/span>, Khamenei<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI believe in a young government who are committed to Hezbollah values [reactionary Islam] that can guide the country through difficult straits \u2026 By young, I don\u2019t just mean to have someone who is 32<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>years<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>old as head of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>government. No, some who are young in the same sense even in their old age; Like\u00a0<\/span>Qassem<\/span> Soleimani whom I think of day and night \u2013 he was sixty years old, not very young; and if he would have survived for another ten years, and I was still alive, I would have kept him in his position (Commander of<\/span>\u00a0the terrorist IRGC<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Quds force).\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>most senior\u00a0<\/span>official, Khamenei, in his letter to the new parliament tried<\/span>\u00a0distancing himself from the wrong economic and\u00a0<\/span>social\u00a0<\/span>policies of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>last decade, of Which Rouhani was president for nearly\u00a0<\/span>eight<\/span>\u00a0years<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>which has increased the society<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0restiveness<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Khamenei<\/span>\u00a0said: \u201cWe should acknowledge in the decade of progress and\u00a0<\/span>justice;<\/span>\u00a0we did not have a<\/span>n accept<\/span>able<\/span>\u00a0score of justice. This t<\/span>ruth should prompt everyone to make a joint effort\u00a0<\/span>about improving the poor people\u2019s condition and make this a priority.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlon<\/span>g<\/span>\u00a0with the judiciary,\u00a0<\/span>which guarantees<\/span>\u00a0the laws to be implemented<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Majlis [parliament] has other powers and rights. Right to search<\/span>, accepting or rejecting managers of the executive branch, the right of warning and asking questions<\/span>\u00a0and even impeaching the government are among\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Majlis<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0rights,\u201d Khamenei added in his letter.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard, the state-run Khabar\u00a0<\/span>Fori<\/span>\u00a0website quoted Mohammadreza\u00a0<\/span>Khabbaz<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>a former regime MP from Rouhani\u2019s faction<\/span>,<\/span> as saying: It is highly possible that [<\/span>new MPs]\u00a0<\/span>will\u00a0<\/span>impeach Rouhani.\u00a0<\/span>Their intention is to take full control of the government<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0They also have\u00a0<\/span>plans<\/span>\u00a0to form a government that is aligned with them so that they do not have any problems in implementing their plans. This government is weaker than standing\u00a0<\/span>up to<\/span>\u00a0the parliament<\/span>. T<\/span>he interior minister has said many times, ‘we are subordinate to the members of parliament<\/span>.<\/span>‘ A government that fails to stand up to the parliament and the illegitimate and irrational demands of its members is weak. Therefore, the government will succumb to the parliament because it will not be able to stand against the parliament at all.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fearing this outcome, while reminding the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>new parliament that their regime is engulfed with problems, and pointing\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>the Iran protests in 2018 and 2019\u00a0<\/span>as \u201cincident<\/span>s<\/span>,\u201d Rouhani\u00a0<\/span>pleaded with<\/span>\u00a0the new parliament\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Wednesday\u00a0<\/span>and said<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Starting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>beginning\u00a0<\/span>of 2018 and the\u00a0<\/span>end\u00a0<\/span>of 2019<\/span>, we faced a new era for the\u00a0<\/span>government<\/span>\u00a0and we had to change from the strategy of opening and progress to the strategy of endurance and tolerance. The conditions that created the most difficult economic conditions for Iran since 2019. You are aware of the statistics and difficult conditions in which we are. We are facing a very difficult year. We are facing both the enemy’s [U.S.] sanctions and the enemy’s [Iranian Resistance] provocation and the dangerous coronavirus, the government is reaching out to the 11th parliament. It expects brotherhood from the parliament.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While t<\/span>he regime\u2019s supreme leader\u00a0<\/span>might<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>seem\u00a0<\/span>close to\u00a0<\/span>achiev<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0his goal of having his desired government<\/span>, he is\u00a0<\/span>in a deadlock.<\/span>\u00a0On one\u00a0<\/span>hand<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>his new parliament is very much weak because<\/span>\u00a0as Abdolreza Rahmani\u00a0<\/span>Fazli<\/span>, regime\u2019s Interior Minister has said, this parliament is a result of a sham election which was held\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>special security situation due to the \u201cNovember incidents, death of\u00a0<\/span>Qassem<\/span>\u00a0Soleimani, the Ukrainian airliner\u00a0<\/span>crash disaster and the\u00a0<\/span>coronavirus<\/span>\u00a0outbreak.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0He also\u00a0<\/span>indirectly reminded Khamenei that this\u00a0<\/span>parliament is<\/span>\u00a0a result of\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>sham election which was\u00a0<\/span>generally<\/span>\u00a0boycotted<\/span>. With such a weak foundation, Khamenei could hardly proceed with his elimination process;\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>ecause the rival faction will not be silent, especially since the cases of looting and crime<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of Khamenei’s\u00a0<\/span>faction are<\/span>\u00a0not\u00a0<\/span>secret<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the main\u00a0<\/span>fear of both factions is a nationwide uprising and the Iranian Resistance\u2019s role. Because removing this government, the increasing infighting and any rift at the top of his regime will lead to an uprising and explo<\/span>sion in<\/span>\u00a0the society.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard,\u00a0<\/span>Khabbaz<\/span>\u00a0told the state-run Khabar\u00a0<\/span>Fori<\/span>\u00a0website: \u201c<\/span>The government and parliament are two wings of one bird. Just as a bird flies with two wings, our\u00a0<\/span>[regime]<\/span>\u00a0will fly with two wings of the executive and the legislature<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This flight will not occur if one or both of its wings are defectiv<\/span>e o<\/span>r<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>ncapaci<\/span>t<\/span>at<\/span>e<\/span>d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Even if<\/span>\u00a0the two wings are inconsistent or in conflict with each other, naturally the bird will not only fly but will fall. When the two wings are facing each other, the situation in the country will worsen, not only will the people’s problems<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>n<\/span>o<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>e s<\/span>ol<\/span>v<\/span>e<\/span>d<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0they wi<\/span>ll increase.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>regime is not capable of resolving the economic or social problems, increasing or decreasing oppression will, either way, increase the possibility of <\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs\u2019 downfall. T<\/span>he mullahs\u2019 regime faces\u00a0<\/span>a deadlock\u00a0<\/span>and will not find a way out.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
