Honor killings in Iran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The disturbing and tragic news of a\u00a0<\/span>13-year-old<\/span>\u00a0Romina Ashrafi being beheaded\u00a0<\/span>with a sickle\u00a0<\/span>by her own father<\/span>\u00a0in Iran<\/span>, described as\u00a0<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>\u201chonor killing<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0has been circulating on<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0web. This news is indeed sad, bu<\/span>t\u00a0<\/span>so\u00a0<\/span>is the killer not being punished in Iran under the\u00a0<\/span>misogynist<\/span>\u00a0laws of the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs\u2019 regime.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a><\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Women\u2019s Committee\u00a0<\/span>said in a statement<\/a> on May 28, the tragic death of Romina\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>i<\/span>s the outcome of the oppressive and medieval policies and laws of the misogynist clerical regime that encourage and promote violence against women and girls. The religious fascism ruling Iran is responsible for the murder of Romina Ashrafi.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The Iranian state media wrote that during the court hearing that ruled to send Romina back to her father\u2019s home, she had cried and pleaded many times that if she returned home, her father would kill her. Still, the criminal Judge based on the anti-Islamic and inhuman laws of the clerical regime ordered Romina to be returned home to her father, which later became her altar<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>NCRI\u2019s Women Committee<\/a> added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian regime\u2019s misogynist constitution<\/span>\u00a0fails to\u00a0<\/span>fairly punish\u00a0<\/span>perpetrators of\u00a0<\/span>so-called honor killings in Iran, who are mostly fathers and bro<\/span>thers of the victims.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Article 220 of the Islamic Penal Code states: \u201c<\/span>T<\/span>he father or paternal grandfather who kills his child\u2026 will only be sentenced to pay the blood money to the heir of the victim.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Romina\u2019s death was condemned by various international institution<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and people around the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amnesty International wrote on\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>witter: \u201c<\/span>We are horrified to learn that 13-year-old Romina Ashrafi was beheaded in her sleep by her father in an “<\/span>honor<\/span>\u00a0killing” in Iran.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While enjoying impunity<\/span>, Romina\u2019s so-called \u201cfather<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>sickle in hand, went to the police station and confessed to the murder.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Furthermore, the\u00a0<\/span>poster announcing Romina Ashrafi<\/span>\u2019s funeral<\/span>, has been widely circulated on social media with the name of her father as the \u201cmourning party<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, while\u00a0<\/span>the Iranian society was shocked\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>this horrific crime, the regime\u2019s state-run media were busy photoshopping\u00a0<\/span>Romina\u2019s picture. They covered a very small portion of her hair and legs in her photo.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the mullahs\u2019 regime, which considers women as\u00a0<\/span>second-class<\/span>\u00a0citizen<\/span>s<\/span>, the number of honor killings has increased and there is no<\/span>t an exact\u00a0<\/span>number<\/span>\u00a0of the victims.\u00a0<\/span>Yet,\u00a0<\/span>Hadi<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Mostafaei<\/span>, the regime\u2019s Deputy Chief of Police for Combating Criminal Offenses<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in 2014<\/span>, said that honor killings made up\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>20 percent of the murder cases in\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New reports from Iran indicate that another 18-year-old woman was murdered by her brother<\/span>. He<\/span>\u00a0set her on fire, for marrying an older man<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A week prior to Romina\u2019s death,\u00a0<\/span>reports from\u00a0<\/span>Sistan<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Baluchistan<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>P<\/span>rovince, southeastern Iran,\u00a0<\/span>indicated another horrific honor killing. The victim was identified as\u00a0<\/span>Hajareh<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Hosseinbor<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>he had a 2-year-old son.<\/span>\u00a0She was regularly abused and beaten by her husband, and finally her lifeless body was abandoned by her husband\u00a0<\/span>outside a hospital.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A hospital nurse said\u00a0<\/span>Hajareh<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0digestive tract had been burned by the acid forced down her throat<\/span>\u00a0by her husband<\/span>. She was unconscious and could hardly breathe. Her head was full of thorns and both of her arms and hands had been pounded by stone<\/span>s<\/span>. According to this nurse, because of the acid poured into her mouth,\u00a0<\/span>Hajareh<\/span>\u00a0had no tooth remaining and many of her bones had been broken<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As long as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs and their medieval constitution exist, t<\/span>hese tragedies will continue. In this regard,\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he NCRI Women\u2019s Committee<\/a> urge<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, the Human Rights Council, international forums, and the UN special rapporteurs for women and children\u2019s rights to condemn the Iranian regime for its misogynist laws and practices that perpetuate such killings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
