The Iranian regime<\/span>\u00a0has continued to press forward with plans for reopening the country this week, despite a still growing death toll and recent spikes in new cases of Covid-19.\u00a0<\/span>Iran\u00a0<\/span>has been suffering from the worst outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/span>The true COVID-19 death toll in comparison with\u00a0<\/span>the clerical regime\u2019s official figures\u00a0<\/span>confirms that it is<\/span>\u00a0one of the worst outbreaks in the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a> announced that as of\u00a0<\/span>Thursday evening, there have over 47,500 death<\/a> due to the coronavirus outbreak across Iran.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n According to the Iranian<\/span>\u00a0regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Health Ministry, roughly 7,500 people have died from the disease since mid-February, while nearly 140,000 have been infected in total. But individual members of the Health Ministry and the coronavirus task force have occasionally broken with the official narrative. Last month, one such official announced that the total number of infections had likely already reached half a million. And figures outside the regime have suggested that that benchmark was passed even earlier, reflecting an earlier-than-acknowledged start date for Iran\u2019s outbreak.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In March, the National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a> pointed to leaked documents<\/a> from the National Emergency Organization which indicated that several individuals had been admitted to Iranian hospitals with suspected coronavirus infection before the end of January. Yet government officials\u2019 first public statement on the matter did not come until February 19, just two days before parliamentary elections. Even in the wake of that statement, authorities continued to push for high voter participation, without safeguards, just as they had pushed for strong attendance at\u00a0<\/span>celebrations of the Iranian revolution\u2019s anniversary, earlier in the month.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n MEK and the NCRI\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0provincial estimates suggest that nearly as many people have died in Tehran alone as Iranian officials say have died across the entire nation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The NCRI\u2019s figures are based in part on hospital records and testimony from Iranian doctors and nurses, as well as other eyewitnesses who have been in communication with the\u00a0<\/span>MEK<\/span>\u00a0network during recent months. Furthermore, the NCRI has cited statistical models to project the likely growth in overall cases and rates of mortality.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The latest estimates point to the avoidance of this outcome.\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>onsidering<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Health Ministry\u2019s acknowledgement of a rising trend in new cases there is little question about this milestone being surpassed in the\u00a0<\/span>coming month. That rising trend represents the ongoing impact of Tehran\u2019s premature reopening, which began with the resumption of supposedly \u201clow-risk\u201d economic activity on April 11.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n T<\/span>he reopening policy\u00a0<\/span>had been<\/span>\u00a0set in advance by\u00a0<\/span>the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>the final authority in all matters of state. At the start of the Iranian calendar year in March, with the coronavirus pandemic already in full swing, Khamenei declared that Iran was entering the \u201cyear of boosting production,\u201d thereby signaling that\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>economic\u00a0<\/span>interests<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>will<\/span>\u00a0rank ahead of other priorities, presumably including public health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nevertheless, the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Health Ministry\u00a0<\/span>blatantly<\/span>\u00a0declare<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0in early May that the\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>\u00a0had seen its smallest number of new Covid-19 cases since March 10.\u00a0<\/span>But as new infections reached the end of their incubation period and more localities were added to the list of \u201cwhite zones\u201d where coronavirus was supposedly under control, this low point was followed by several consecutive days of expanding growth in new cases<\/span>, which even was admitted by the regime\u2019s officials.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On Tuesday, the Health Ministry reported that there had been 57 coronavirus-related deaths over the previous 24 hours \u2013 still more than the presumed low point on May 3. Yet reopening procedures continued to accelerate on\u00a0<\/span>Tuesday<\/span>\u00a0with a change in guidance that allowed restaurants to begin admitting patrons for sit-down dining.\u00a0<\/span>And just a day prior, authorities reopened religious shrines throughout the country<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This outcome should have been predictable to anyone\u00a0<\/span>because those<\/span>\u00a0shrines, attract tens of millions of pilgrims each year<\/span>\u00a0and are sources of income and centers of plunder of mullahs\u2019 regime<\/span>. Many\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0authorities rejected those calls outright, and the overseer of at least one shrine insisted that it should remain open specifically as a \u201cplace of healing\u201d\u00a0<\/span>during<\/span>\u00a0the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>while<\/span>\u00a0Iran\u2019s holy city of Qom developed into an epicenter for the spread of Covid-19 not just across\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>\u00a0but throughout the region. At least five other Middle Eastern countries were able to trace their first cases back to Iran before the end of March.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This regional spread also reflects the fact that\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>ian regime<\/span>\u00a0refused to close its borders for far longer than in neighboring countries. In fact, Mahan Airlines reportedly continued to operate flights to and from China, where the novel coronavirus originated, throughout March and into April. Similar disparities between Iran and surrounding countries were observed in lockdowns of domestic economies. As a result, the April 11 start date for Iran\u2019s reopening marked the conclusion of only a brief pause, which was out of step with the greater severity of that country\u2019s outbreak.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Despite all of this, Iranian<\/span>\u00a0regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0authorities continue to publicly champion their response to the pandemic as a triumph. Even before restrictions began to be lifted, Tehran rejected offers of medical assistance from both the United States and Doctors Without Borders, insisting that such aid was not needed. But on the other hand, the regime has continually appealed to the Western world for sanctions relief. Rouhani marked Wednesday\u2019s opening of the new Iranian parliament with a speech that repeated longstanding condemnation of Washington\u2019s supposed \u201ceconomic and medical terrorism.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Those condemnations have been intertwined with public statements, by Rouhani and others, insisting that the coronavirus response has not be adversely affected by sanctions, and that Iran\u2019s response was superior to those of various Western governments. Rouhani himself insisted in April that Iranian hospitals had an ample supply of beds in intensive care units, as well as personal protective equipment and other vital resources for addressing the pandemic. And\u00a0<\/span>amid<\/span>\u00a0a seemingly\u00a0<\/span>premature re-opening,\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0authorities even went so far as to\u00a0<\/span>brag<\/span>\u00a0that they were prepared to export large quantities of these resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On Monday,\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Foreign Minister<\/span>\u00a0and chief apologist<\/span>\u00a0Javad Zarif made a similar offer to African countries\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0Africa Day. \u201c<\/span>Iran has always been \u2013 and will forever be \u2013\u00a0<\/span>a reliable partner of all fraternal African nations<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>he posted on Twitter,\u00a0<\/span>adding that in the midst of the global pandemic, the regime is \u201c<\/span>ready to share our experience and expertise to help save lives<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0His remarks\u00a0<\/span>contra<\/span>dict\u00a0<\/span>his and other regime\u2019s apologists<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0effort<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to depict U.S. sanctions for Iran\u2019s high mortality rate<\/span>\u00a0of the COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0militancy\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0being amplified by the regime\u2019s pre-existing concerns about its loosening grip on power. Since the beginning of 2018,\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>\u00a0has been rocked by two nationwide uprisings, plus countless smaller-scale protests featuring anti-<\/span>regime<\/span>\u00a0slogans like \u201cdeath to the dictator.\u201d In March, a think tank,\u00a0<\/span>Asra<\/span>, published an analysis of the conditions surrounding the pandemic, and warned regime authorities that a questionable response and a lack of public trust were sure to set the stage for further unrest in the aftermath of the crisis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The think tank went on to recommend that Iran step up its repression of dissent in order to head off another uprising.
