The National Council of Resistance of Iran\u2019s United States Representative Office (NCRI-U<\/a><\/span>S<\/span>) held a virtual conference, attended by\u00a0<\/span>renowned American politicians, entitled<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>The Growing Threat from Iran\u2019s Regime.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speakers\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>th<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>conference were:\u00a0<\/span>Under Secretary\u00a0<\/span>John Rood,\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ormer Undersecretary of Defense for Policy<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0Ambassador Robert Joseph,\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ormer Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ambassador\u00a0<\/span>Joseph\u00a0<\/span>DeTrani<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ormer Director of National Counterproliferation Center and Special Adviser to the Director of National Intelligence<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Professor\u00a0<\/span>Olli\u00a0<\/span>Heinonen<\/span>, a <\/span>d<\/span>istinguished fellow at the Stimson Center,\u00a0<\/span>and f<\/span>ormer deputy director-general of the IAEA, and head of its Department of Safeguards; and Alireza Jafarzadeh<\/a>, NCRI-US Deputy Director<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Panelists<\/span> focused on subjects with regard to the Iranian regime and the threat it poses to the international <\/span>community. Some of these subjects were:\u00a0<\/span>The e<\/span>xpiring United Nations arms embargo on the Iranian regime, snapback of UN sanctions, the Iranian\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0regional aggression, whether direct or through supporting proxy militias, its terrorism and\u00a0<\/span>assassination<\/span>\u00a0of dissidents\u00a0<\/span>abroad<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime’s missile and nuclear\u00a0<\/span>program<\/span>\u00a0and its domestic\u00a0<\/span>oppression<\/span>\u00a0and crackdown on protests.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0<\/span>Jafarzadeh<\/span>, who was also the moderator of this webinar, started this event by referring to the COVID-19 crisis in Iran, which has so far, according to the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0claimed lives of\u00a0<\/span>over 49,000 people<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and the regime\u2019s attempts\u00a0<\/span>to exploit this pandemic to overshadow the Iranian people\u2019s desire for regime change.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The world is dealing with Covid19 pandemic and there is no exception the case of Iran, but there is a big difference; everywhere else the governments are united with the people to fight the Covid19, in the case of Iran, the regime is united with the Covid19 to fight the people. And that explains all the miseries, high number of casualties, the cover-ups, and how the regime is viewing Covid19, and perhaps as an opportunity to exploit to put a cover on the uprising. Also, use it as an opportunity to get concessions and help from the outside world. They asked from IMF 5 billion dollars, they are hoping to lift the sanctions on the Iranian regime under the cover of the Covid19.” <\/span> Mr.\u00a0Jafarzadeh said in his opening remarks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Under\u00a0<\/span>Secretary John Rood pointed to <\/span>the threat of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Iran<\/span>ian<\/span>\u00a0regime,\u00a0<\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>use of proxy militias,<\/span>\u00a0particularly the Revolutionary Guards <\/a>(IRGC)<\/span>\u00a0Q<\/a><\/span>u<\/span><\/a>ds\u00a0<\/span>F<\/span><\/a>orce<\/a> using lethal action<\/span>. He further elaborated on h<\/span>ow to deter\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime in the region<\/span>\u00a0and stop its malign activities<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Under\u00a0<\/span>Secretary Rood called the elimination of\u00a0<\/span>Q<\/span>assem<\/span>\u00a0Soleimani, head of the regime\u2019s Quds Force<\/a>, and<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mullahs\u2019 terror mastermind as \u201c<\/span>extremely critical<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0important for deterrence<\/span>,\u201d of the regime\u2019s activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do we do with this situation? I think one important thing is to continue the maximum pressure campaign, to deplete and limit the ability of the regime to export its malign influence across the region. It would be more preferable if we saw a more multilateral approach in most of those sanctions. The US military forces are needed to work with the partners in the region to deter and take necessary steps like the strike on Soleimani. \u201c Under\u00a0<\/span>Secretary Rood said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While referring to the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime\u2019s ongoing violation of Human rights, Ambassador Robert Joseph said that <\/span>the Iranian regime <\/span>has executed 100,000 people, including thousands last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of Iran are the first and foremost victims of this regime. They have suffered for over 40 years of brutal repression, including mass executions, more accurately called mass murders of more than one hundred thousand of their citizens. In the last year alone thousand have been gun downed in the streets or prisons when they dared to seek democracy and an end to the endemic corruption and pervasive incompetence of a regime that is failed its own people wherever and whenever in need, whether in massive floods, or the coronavirus.\u201d Ambassador Joseph said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ambassador\u00a0<\/span>Detrani<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>point<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with world powers, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),<\/span> its shortcomings, and how it would lead Iran to possess nuclear weapons. <\/span>He<\/span> said:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWhen I was working in government, I had responsibility for nonproliferation and counter-proliferation. Many of my colleagues were very instrumental in the drafting of the JCPOA and many of them were very surprised that I didn\u2019t support JCPOA… what we were telling Iran is that within 15 years in 2031 you can spine as many as centrifuges as you want, you can enrich it at any level you want\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Olli\u00a0<\/span>Heinon<\/span>en<\/span>\u00a0referred to the regime\u2019s deception and cover-up of its nuclear program<\/span>\u00a0to obtain a nuclear bomb and said: \u201c<\/span>Documents seized from Iran show<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0regime may have undeclared\u00a0<\/span>nuclear<\/span>\u00a0materials. A decision must be made to go hard on the regime because of Tehran’s non-compliance. Since 2002, the regime has never\u00a0<\/span>been in compliance with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>nuclear<\/span>\u00a0safeguards<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
