Iran: Coronavirus Death Toll Exceeds 50,000 in 325 Cities<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The\u00a0<\/a><\/span>People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK) announced on June 7, that over 50,000 people<\/a> have lost their lives due to the coronavirus outbreak<\/span>\u00a0in Iran<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This is indeed a tragedy and\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>humanitarian\u00a0<\/span>catastrophe<\/span>, yet<\/span>\u00a0it was evitable.\u00a0<\/span>A glance at the regime\u2019s approach and handling of this crisis prove this.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike other countries, when the COVID-19<\/a> virus was first detected in Iran, the Iranian regime denied its existence.\u00a0<\/span>The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) revealed documents of Iran\u2019s National Emergency Organization<\/span>, obtained by the MEK\u2019s<\/a> network inside Iran, showing that\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>authorities were aware of the existence of this virus and had some\u00a0<\/span>infected patients hospitalized, but refused to tell the public.\u00a0<\/span>While other countries canceled\u00a0<\/span>all<\/span>\u00a0flight<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to and from China, Mahan<\/span>\u00a0A<\/span>ir airline,<\/span>\u00a0which belongs to the regime\u2019s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC<\/a>)\u00a0<\/span>continued flying to China; and while other airlines refused to relocate Chinese passengers, Mahan<\/span>\u00a0A<\/span>ir did the opposite. But why?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime refused to tell the public for one reason:\u00a0<\/span>it wanted\u00a0<\/span>a larger turnout\u00a0<\/span>during its anniversary\u00a0<\/span>marches\u00a0<\/span>and sham\u00a0<\/span>parliamentary elections, to\u00a0<\/span>give\u00a0<\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>corrupt\u00a0<\/span>rule<\/span>\u00a0a veneer of legitimacy<\/span>. The regime\u2019s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, also needed this<\/span>, in line with\u00a0<\/span>his policy of contraction, to\u00a0<\/span>justify his massive purge of the rival faction\u2019s candidate<\/span>s<\/span>.\u00a0 Following the nationwide Iran protests in November, with over 1500 martyrs, and the second wave of protests in January following the\u00a0<\/a><\/span>IRGC\u2019s downing of the Ukrainian airliner, killing all 176 passengers aboard,\u00a0<\/span>the conflict between\u00a0<\/span>the Iranian\u00a0<\/span>people and the regime reached an irreversible point<\/span>. The\u00a0<\/span>mullahs were expecting a\u00a0<\/span>general boycott of their anniversary carnival and\u00a0<\/span>sham<\/span>\u00a0parliamentary election<\/span>s. Despite<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0regime\u2019s criminal decision to cover<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>up the existence of the COVID-19 in Iran,\u00a0<\/span>this so-called \u201c<\/span>e<\/span>lection\u201d\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>met\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>an unprecedented\u00a0<\/span>boycott. Yet, those few people who participated became hosts of this virus and spread it across Iran, starting\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ity of Qom.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0in addition, due to its international isolation, the Iranian regime needed to maintain its diplomatic and commercial relationship with China.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo\"<\/a><\/span>Following the reports published by the Iranian Resistance and those\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>citizen journalists a<\/span>s well as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>health workers, the regime was forced to\u00a0<\/span>announce th<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>OVID-19 ha<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0spread across Iran.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, the mullahs\u2019 regime entered\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>second phase of<\/span>\u00a0its<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cover-up campaign: downplaying the crisis and trying to balance Iran<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0coronavirus death toll with th<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0of other countries<\/span>. Y<\/span>et<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0unlike other countries<\/span>, it<\/span>\u00a0refused to i<\/span>mpos<\/span>e a national quarantine<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The regime\u2019s president, Hassan Rouhani<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and Khamenei were on the frontline of\u00a0<\/span>the cover-up and downplaying<\/span>\u00a0campaign.\u00a0<\/span>Simultaneously<\/span>, the regime\u2019s officials and apologists<\/span>\u00a0tried to\u00a0<\/span>blame\u00a0<\/span>the growing COVID-19 casualties on the United States\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>anctions, with Khamenei going as far as foolishly speaking of the U.S. \u201cbioterrorism<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In addition, the regime intensified its security measures,\u00a0<\/span>opened fire on those prisoners protesting to be freed amid the virus outbreak, and arrest<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0those telling the truth about the crisis\u2019 extent and dimension<\/span>s,<\/span>\u00a0under the pretext of \u201crumor-mongering.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a nutshell,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs<\/span>\u00a0were intending to use the coron<\/span>avirus outbreak in Iran as both a lever of pressure o<\/span>n the international community to free themselves from the comprehensive sanctions, which have crippled\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>warmongering machine and a lever of oppression to control the restive Iranian society.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When the regime, fearing a\u00a0<\/span>nationwide protest<\/span>, issued a national quarantine, it refused to financially support people.\u00a0<\/span>Therefore, m<\/span>any people lost their jobs and were rapidly\u00a0<\/span>joining the army of starving people. Fearing an uprising and\u00a0<\/span>in need of having its economy running at full pa<\/span>ce<\/span>\u00a0to fund its illicit activities<\/span>, the regime\u00a0<\/span>forced people back to work\u00a0<\/span>and opened holy shrines, a longstanding\u00a0<\/span>source\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>revenue for the mullahs\u2019 regime by using people\u2019s religious views.\u00a0 Simultaneously, Rouhani continued<\/span>\u00a0his blatant lies a<\/span>bout\u00a0<\/span>making more provinces \u201cwhite\u201d or virus-free. The NCRI<\/a> and its president-elect Maryam\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Rajavi<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at that time warned of consequences of the regime\u2019s decision to reopen\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>economy and highlighted that officials\u00a0<\/span>had\u00a0<\/span>prioritize<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0their grasp on power over people\u2019s lives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as the Iranian Resistance revealed, huge financial institutions, such as the\u00a0<\/span>Astan<\/span>-e Quds\u00a0<\/span>Razavi<\/span><\/a>, whi<\/span>ch are controlled by Khamenei himself, have billions of dollars of assets and financial resources to support the Iranian<\/span>\u00a0people<\/span>. Yet, Khamenei refused\u00a0<\/span>to use those funds to fight the coronavirus pandemic<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When the regime\u2019s cover-up policy failed, due to the Iranian Resistance<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0revelations<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s infighting<\/span>\u00a0intensified<\/span>, resulting in revelations of some extent of the crisis by the regime\u2019s own officials<\/span>. Meanwhile,<\/span>\u00a0Rouhani and government officials shamelessly accused people of not being cooperative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime’s inaction and cover-up have turned Iran into the coronavirus\u2019s killing zone for the Iranian people and an epicenter of COVID-19<\/a> in the region and the world.\u00a0<\/span>A\u00a0<\/span>glance\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>the regime’s approach in dealing with the coronavirus shows that this crisis was evitable, but\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs refused to help\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>people and prioritized their own interests over those of\u00a0<\/span>the nation<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard, Mrs. Maryam\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Rajavi<\/span><\/a>, the President-elect of the NCRI<\/a>, while reacting to the horrific and tragic number of fatalities, which has surged past 50,000, said: \u201cThe catastrophe could have been prevented as was the loss of so many lives. The fatality figures in Iran, even the official figures, cannot be compared with other Middle East countries, whose economic and social infrastructures are far weaker than Iran.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKhamenei and Rouhani are directly responsible for the increasing number of victims and must be held to account. Instead of paying the salaries of workers and hardworking people for a few months from the vast resources of the economic cartels controlled by Khamenei and the IRGC<\/a>, they have sent the people of Iran back to work and to the Coronavirus altar of sacrifice,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
