With a new administration taking the helm in Washington, the French elections upcoming, then the sham \u201celections\u201d in Iran, and unprecedented developments in the making in the Middle East and on the international stage.<\/p>\n<p>The year 2017 has begun with enormous concerns for the mullahs in Iran, writes Shahriar Kia of the main Iranian opposition group People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK.<\/p>\n<p>With the death of former Iranian regime president\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/realspin\/2017\/01\/09\/the-future-of-iran-following-rafsanjanis-death\/#133ecbe5a00f\">Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani<\/a>, Iran\u2019s establishment witnessed the fall of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/ncri-statements\/president-elect\/21897-maryam-rajavi-with-the-death-of-rafsanjani-one-of-the-two-pillars-of-the-ruling-theocracy-collapses\">one of its two pillars<\/a>, Kia argued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/articles\/2017\/01\/appeasement_of_iran_must_end.html\">in a commentary piece<\/a> on January 26 for the American Thinker.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote:<\/p>\n<p>To this end, Tehran\u2019s religious dictatorship suffered a devastating blow and weakened in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the most ruthless factions of his regime are trekking down the path of further contraction,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/trump-homeland-secretary-warned-iran-infiltrating-southern-border\/\">advocating extremism<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2016\/06\/03\/iran-still-leading-state-sponsor-of-terrorism-u-s-state-department-reports\/\">supporting terrorism<\/a>, and pursuing their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/iaea-iran-exceeds-limits-heavy-water\/3589850.html\">nuclear ambitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the regime weakness bringing joy to the Iranian population, the mullahs are left terrified of a repeat of uprisings on the model of 2009. This is especially significant with crucial presidential \u201celections\u201d coming in May.<\/p>\n<p>The general public and even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/news\/iran-resistance\/21991-the-message-of-a-prominent-political-prisoner-in-iran\">political prisoners are voicing their dissent<\/a>\u00a0like never before, especially thanks to social media. Families of regime victims are protesting, especially those whose loved ones perished amongst the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2013\/07\/the-forgotten-mass-execution-of-prisoners-in-iran-in-1988\/\">30,000 political prisoners<\/a>\u00a0massacred by the mullahs back in 1988. The people are demanding an end to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/majid-rafizadeh\/iran-is-leader-of-executi_b_11410368.html\">ruthless executions<\/a>\u00a0and the regime\u2019s existence.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian people, one year after the Iranian nuclear pact\u2019s implementation,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/foreign-policy\/313133-iran-in-2016-exploiting-obamas-appeasement-policy\">have gained nothing<\/a>. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, however, has ironically\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-iran-contracts-insight-idUSKBN15328S\">benefited Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards<\/a>\u00a0(IRGC), allowing Iran to finance lethal ambitions in Syria and throughout the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The world has come to realize that the mullahs, the IRGC, the<a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/en\/2016\/06\/25\/In-first-Hezbollah-s-Nasrallah-confirms-all-financial-support-comes-from-Iran.html\">\u00a0Lebanese Hizb\u2019allah<\/a>\u00a0and other Shiite militias have no such role of confronting extremism and Daesh (ISIS\/ISIL). In fact, their goal has been to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/foreign-policy\/280567-the-syria-conflict-fanned-by-iran\">maintain Syrian dictator Bashar Assad<\/a>\u00a0in power.<\/p>\n<p>They have the main source of distributing terrorism and instability across this flashpoint region. In fact, their presence in Syria guarantees the mullahs\u2019 continued rule back home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaraby.co.uk\/english\/indepth\/2017\/1\/13\/iran-doubles-down-in-syria\">Khamenei recently said<\/a>\u00a0if they hadn\u2019t fought in Syria, they \u201chad not been confronted [in Syria], we should have stood against them in Tehran, Fars, Khorasan and Isfahan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the latest Syrian ceasefire effort, Iran and its proxy elements are the sole parties seeking to sabotage the entire initiative. According to Syrian opposition leaders, Iran is the sole party seeking nothing but to maintain Assad in power at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>No political solution is possible in the Levant as long as the IRGC and their Shiite militias are present in the country. Thus, if we seek peace in this land, the only serious path forward lies in expelling the mullahs from Syria. The main party in detriment from a ceasefire and eventual peace in Syria is none other than Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/obamas-eight-years-of-failure-with-iran\/article\/2607800\">Obama administration\u2019s appeasement policy\u00a0<\/a>vis-\u00e0-vis Iran is the main reason behind the Syria tragedy and the mullahs\u2019 dominance in this war. Iran counted on the West\u2019s engagement approach to literally export its extremism under the banner of Islam.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0end of Obama\u2019s tenure\u00a0leaves little hope for the mullahs\u2019 regime to act as they wish. This situation intensified ever since the occupation of Iraq back in 2003. Khamenei has been the main benefactor in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. But such days are over.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the failed rapprochement approach, a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/Newsfront\/Shahriar-Kia-President-Iran-Policy\/2016\/10\/06\/id\/751976\/\">policy change<\/a>\u00a0is needed to end the Middle East crisis.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/trump_and_us_foreign_policy_visvis_iran.html\">Actions must be taken<\/a>\u00a0in the face of the IRGC\u2019s terrorism and its destructive role in the region. Otherwise neither the Middle East nor the world, for that matter, will ever experience true peace and tranquility.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot ally with one form of extremism to root out another. Extremism under the name of Islam, be it Sunni or Shiite, is no different in viciousness and none represent Islam. In fact, they are better described as forms of religious fascism.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, no government can promote an alliance with Tehran under the pretext of pursuing a security policy. Furthermore, we cannot neglect our principles for the mere sake of short-term economic gains and turn our backs on\u00a0human rights and women\u2019s rights violations\u00a0in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s Iran has an alternative with a democratic agenda based on respecting religious freedoms, universal suffrage, separation of church and state, and gender equality. The voice of this alternative should be heard, as proposed by nearly two dozen senior top U.S. officials in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2017\/01\/15\/former-u-s-officials-urge-trump-administration-to-work-with-iran-opposition.html\">hand-delivered letter<\/a>\u00a0to President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>This alternative is none other than the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/\">National Council of Resistance of Iran<\/a>\u00a0under the leadership of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryam-rajavi.com\/en\/\">Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, who years ago presented her vision for a future Iran in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ncr-iran.org\/en\/issues\/ten-point-plan\">10-point-plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The solution presented by the Iranian opposition can render a new era for the people of Iran, nations across the Middle East and beyond.
