\"Regime-Change-for-Democracy-and-Justice-in-Iran-\"Iranians, supporters of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a><\/span>,<\/span> will hold an online gathering on June 20, marking 39 years of struggle for a free Iran. This conference will be attended by thousands of Iranians from different parts of world, as well as renowned political luminaries from across the globe. June 20 is the Iranian Resistance<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> \u201cDay of Martyrs and Political Prisoners.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This conference, which will be broadcasted by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a> on Twitter<\/a>, intends to echo the voice of the Iranian restive society for regime change. A regime that has only brought misery to the Iranian people by wasting their national resources on terrorism and nuclear program, oppressing them and causing natural disasters via its wrong policies, such as its mishandling of the COVID-19 outbreak<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Background\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Ruhollah Khomeini, the Iranian regime\u2019s founder, hijacked the anti-monarchy revolution in 1979 and tried to impose his reign of terror and oppress the people, the MEK<\/a> and its leader <\/span>Massoud<\/span> Rajavi<\/span><\/a>, as the only <\/span>progressive <\/span>Muslim group who had fought the monarchy regime, were the first to oppose the mullahs\u2019 regime. The MEK<\/a> used the semi-democratic situation after the 1979 revolution until 1981. <\/span>Massoud<\/span> Rajavi<\/span><\/a> even participated in Iran\u2019s first presidential <\/span>race but<\/span> was banned from participating by Khomeini for not having voted for the regime\u2019s \u201cVelayat<\/span>-e<\/span> Faqih\u201d or absolute rule of clergy article of the constitution.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The MEK\u2019s differences with Khomeini and his regime dated back to the 1970s and stem<\/span>med<\/span> from its opposition to what is known today as Islamic extremism. Infuriated by the position taken by the MEK against his regime and worried about the MEK\u2019s growing popularity, Khomeini secretly mobilized and ordered a brutal crackdown against the MEK and its supporters. Between 1979 and 1981, some 70 MEK members and sympathizers were killed and several thousand more were imprisoned by the Iranian regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On June 20, 1981, the MEK called for a nationwide demonstration. In Tehran alone, over 500,000 people participated in the MEK\u2019s peaceful protest and <\/span>marched<\/span> toward the regime\u2019s Majlis (Parliament).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Khomeini ordered the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC<\/a>) to open fire on the demonstrators, killing thousands on <\/span>the <\/span>street<\/span>s<\/span> and arresting people <\/span>on a <\/span>large scale. Many of these prisoners were execute<\/span>d<\/span> without being identified. June 20, 1981 marks the beginning of the Iranian Resistance movement to overthrow the religious fascism ruling Iran. A movement with over 120,000 martyrs. The Iranian regime has never <\/span>ceased <\/span>killing and torturing MEK<\/a> members and supporter<\/span>s<\/span>, and in return the MEK has never stopped its struggle for freedom and democracy in Iran.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Under these circumstances, on July 21, 1981, a month after the beginning of Khomeini\u2019s reign of terror, <\/span>Massoud<\/span> Rajavi<\/span><\/a> founded the\u202fNational Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)<\/a>, a coalition of Iran<\/span>ian<\/span> opposition forces that aspired to <\/span>replace <\/span>the religious fascism with a democratic, pluralist and secular state.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1981, MEK activists have been the prime victims of human rights violations in Iran. Over 120,000 of its members and supporters have been executed by the Iranian regime, 30,000 of w<\/span>ho<\/span> were executed in a few months in the summer of 1988, <\/span>based <\/span>on a fatwa by Khomeini, which stated any prisoners who remain<\/span>ed<\/span> loyal to the MEK must be executed.<\/span> That fatwa is still in effect today.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime used the appeasement policy and wast<\/span>ed<\/span> Iran\u2019s national wealth to mobilize over 13 governments to destroy the MEK<\/a> and the Iranian Resistance. This began in 1997 with the United Sates designating the MEK as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), which was described then by the American media as a \u201cgoodwill gesture\u201d toward the Iranian regime and its newly appointed so-called \u201cmoderate\u201d <\/span>President<\/span> Mohammad Khatami. European countries followed the same pattern, replicating <\/span>the <\/span>U.S.\u2019s move in 2002, designating the MEK as terrorist organization.\u00a0 The appeasement policy not only prolonged the regime\u2019s life but resulted in death and suffering of the Iranian Resistance\u2019s members.\u00a0 The bombing of MEK camps in Iraq during the 2003 U.S.-Iraq conflict, the <\/span>attempted <\/span>coup-d\u2019\u00e9tat of July 17, 2003 <\/span>on the <\/span>NCRI headquarters in France, and the numerous raids and rocket attacks against MEK camps in Iraq were just some of the gifts that the policy of appeasement and its orchestrators delivered to the Iranian regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All these bogus and baseless designations were revoked by the European Courts and the U.S. <\/span>C<\/span>ourt of <\/span>A<\/span>ppeal<\/span>s<\/span> after legal battle<\/span>s<\/span> that lasted more than 15 years and resulted in the victory of justice and truth.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2009, the European Union removed the MEK<\/a> from its list of terrorist organizations. In following years, the U.S. judiciary declared that the MEK had been wrongly designated as a terrorist group and in 2012, the U.S. Department of State <\/span>lifted <\/span>this designation. Canada and Australia also removed the MEK from their lists shortly after the U.S.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, <\/span>the <\/span>MEK remains a strong and cohesive organization, with a broad reach both worldwide and deep within Iran, and with its <\/span>growing number of <\/span>\u201cResistance Units<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d has played a leading role during the recent nationwide Iran protests. The MEK and the NCRI<\/a> <\/span>have <\/span>played a vital role in exposing the regime\u2019s nuclear activities.\u00a0 In a nutshell<\/span>,<\/span> the Iranian Resistance chose to prevent an aggressive, virulently sectarian and repressive religious fascism from obtaining nuclear weapons capability, and sav<\/span>e<\/span> Iran, the region, and the world from the horrors of such a scenario.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
