According to the Iranian opposition, nearly 70,000 people<\/a> have lost their lives due to the novel coronavirus pandemic in Iran. <\/span>Since the beginning of this crisis<\/span>,<\/span> the Iranian regime resorted to cover<\/span>–<\/span>up and <\/span>inaction to divert people\u2019s attention from their righteous demands and control the restive Iranian society. <\/span>This was b<\/span>ecause the November <\/a><\/span>2019<\/a> and<\/span> January 2020<\/a> nationwide Iran protests <\/span>had shaken the regime\u2019s foundation<\/span>s,<\/span> and the mullahs know the next uprising will<\/span> end in their downfall.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While reports from Iran indicated the arrival of COVID-19<\/a>, the regime denied its existence to<\/span> have a larger turnout during its foundation anniversary and <\/span>the sham parliamentary elections. When the Iranian Resistance\u2019s revelations and international community pressure forced the regime to <\/span>acknowledge the existence of the <\/span>virus<\/span>,<\/span> it <\/span>downplay<\/span>ed<\/span> it.\u00a0<\/span> The regime\u2019s president, Hassan Rouhani<\/span>,<\/span> led<\/span> the campaign of deception and cover-up. On May 23 he said: <\/span>\u201cSome are trying to scare people in the country about the Coronavirus disease. We should not tolerate this.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier on May 20 he blatantly claimed: \u201cWe have been making progress step-by-step in these three months, having no relapses anywhere. Altogether, we have made good progress in the fight against this dangerous virus and have almost managed to contain the disease.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, <\/span>on May 24, state television reported: \u201cThe daily number of infections rose by 1.32 percent in the first ten days of the Iranian month of <\/span>Ordibehesht<\/span> [April and May], 1.4 percent during the second 10 days, and 1.48 percent in the third ten days, respectively.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, the regime\u2019s 40 years of oppression, export of terrorism and corruption has turned the Iranian society into a powder<\/span> keg<\/span>, ready to explode. Therefore, <\/span>the <\/span>mullahs used the <\/span>COVID-19 as a lever of oppression to control this restive society, divert people\u2019s attention from their desire of regime change and prevent possible uprisings by sending people to the COVID-19 killing zone. <\/span>Yet, th<\/span>e regime\u2019s inhumane measures <\/span>have<\/span> increased public hatred toward the regime and the society\u2019s explosiveness<\/span>. This has become so much imminent that even state-run media are admitting to it and warn<\/span>ing<\/span> one another about <\/span>an <\/span>upcoming \u201cflood of revenge<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> In this regard, the <\/span>s<\/span>tate-run <\/span>Mostaghel<\/span> daily published an <\/span>article<\/span><\/a>. Below are <\/strong><\/span>excerpts of its translation<\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to use <\/span><\/b>the <\/span><\/b>coronavirus [opportunity]?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

It was around midnight when <\/span>we learned about the <\/span>gas price hike from <\/span>the <\/span>T<\/span>V news <\/span>ticker<\/span>. We were shocked<\/span>. T<\/span>hey <\/span>[<\/span>the <\/span>government] had said nothing before<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>it <\/span>al<\/span>l happened suddenly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People<\/span> from rural districts, those living under the poverty line<\/span>,<\/span> took their lives in <\/span>their <\/span>hands <\/span>a<\/span>nd<\/span> poured<\/span> on<\/span>to the<\/span> streets. <\/span>They were <\/span>frustrated with <\/span>crushing poverty and the government\u2019s mismanagement in providing them with their least needs,<\/span> and now being ignored about the process of the fuel price-hike<\/span>. Then the internet was shut down and people\u2019s connection with each other and the world was cut. <\/span>News of unbelievable massacres <\/span>in different parts of country were published by unofficial sources, adding to the protesters\u2019 anger.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fire, hidden under the ashes of people\u2019s <\/span>patience<\/span>,<\/span> was <\/span>expanding and pushing the situation out of [regime\u2019s] control. <\/span>An a<\/span>stounding number of deaths, <\/span>in the absence of fair media, was fueling this fire. <\/span>Those<\/span> who were<\/span> indifferent were <\/span>gradually coming to the scene<\/span>,<\/span> and this is something that no government wants to happen. <\/span>Finally, <\/span>the<\/span> use of <\/span>harsh methods [of oppression] in <\/span>dealing with protesters, <\/span>amid <\/span>the <\/span>internet blackout, temporar<\/span>il<\/span>y <\/span>had good results [for the regime]. The situation <\/span>came <\/span>under control without giving a practical answer to people\u2019s demands. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fear of bullet<\/span>s<\/span> and pressure<\/span> pushed the people, wh<\/span>o had hopes <\/span>of a better<\/span> life, back. Yet, the principal players of this game know that what happened in November <\/span>is a prologue to <\/span>an upcoming flood <\/span>from<\/span> the<\/span> slums, which will wash everything with it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, a savior was needed to divert people\u2019s attention from <\/span>the <\/span>November and January incidents<\/span>. <\/span>So,<\/span> came the novel coronavirus. The government used people\u2019s fear of this invisible enemy to unleash th<\/span>e dragon among them. <\/span>Long before its public announcement, COVID-19 <\/a><\/span>had come or<\/span> had been<\/span> brought to Iran. But to <\/span>defy Trump, <\/span>they held <\/span>events marking the <\/span>41st anniversary of the 1979 revolution. And to <\/span>slap those dissatisfied <\/span>with<\/span> the <\/span>approbative supervision<\/span>, the Parliamentary elections w<\/span>ere <\/span>held as scheduled. Then they said: we <\/span>just found about the virus<\/span>\u2019<\/span> existence, so people watch yourselves.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Coronavirus was a gift from heaven and a savior. <\/span>They even<\/span> put aside China\u2019s management of COVID-19<\/a> and instead <\/span>turned to preaching and giving advice to people. Although these methods have long proven to be <\/span>inefficient<\/span> in controlling and <\/span>correcting the situation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, without any material support<\/span>, they<\/span> \u201casked\u201d people to stay at home but did not close anywhere. <\/span>Freeways were opened before the Nowruz holidays<\/span>,<\/span> but people<\/span> were told<\/span> \u201cnot to travel<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d They did not control cit<\/span>y<\/span> entrances <\/span>are <\/span>neglect<\/span>ed<\/span> people\u2019s carelessness i<\/span>n going on vacation. When the medical staff were <\/span>being crushed <\/span>unde<\/span>r the heavy wave of horrible deaths, they sen<\/span>t violet oil so it could, along with camel urine<\/span>, solve the problem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus<\/span>, they [<\/span>the <\/span>authorities] left hungry and depressed people alone in a room with a<\/span> lion <\/span>and waited for the work to be done. Meanwhile, without attracting any attention <\/span>to the <\/span>skyrocket<\/span>ing<\/span> prices, some courts <\/span>were held as though<\/span> they <\/span>were held in a normal situation<\/span>;<\/span> each session could have <\/span>crea<\/span>ted a fuss, abandon<\/span>ing the<\/span> country\u2019s forests to burn <\/span>in fire and issu<\/span>ing<\/span> death sentences for the detainees of the November incident.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While people are just trying to survive, <\/span>this instrumental use of the COVID-19 to silence and control the anger of <\/span>uncategorized starving people <\/span>was so ruthlessly done that after <\/span>six<\/span> months, they not only<\/span> have not<\/span> achieved any success <\/span>in controlling the virus, but according to the official statistics, the situation is out of control. Thousands of infections and hundreds of <\/span>deaths<\/span> per day confirms this. What other than this crisis could have diverted attention from <\/span>people\u2019s <\/span>immersed anger and unfulfilled demands?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, this souvenir from China will not be left without a reward. But they should not forget that COVID-19 will end one day<\/span>. Then these wounded and deprived people <\/span>will <\/span>have nothing else <\/span>left <\/span>to lose. <\/span>When their anger erupts<\/span>,<\/span> it will <\/span>fight until the [regime\u2019s] <\/span>destruction<\/span>,<\/span> and you would see what you do not want to see. <\/span>If they had used the coronavirus <\/span>situation to help people, to repair their reputation, undoubtedly,<\/span> those marginalized people could have played a pivotal role in balancing the situation in <\/span>the <\/span>fu<\/span>ture.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This nation will not forget how it was abandoned during these bitter days.\u00a0 This <\/span>will affect the upcoming incidents.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Government did not contain and control the coronavirus<\/a> <\/span>to relevantly control the anger of defian<\/span>t people. <\/span>But I wish that the suffering and illness of the people <\/span>were<\/span> not used <\/span>as <\/span>a cure for <\/span>obliviousness<\/span> and a mean<\/span>s<\/span> of revenge <\/span>of<\/span> the events of November<\/a> and December<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
