Although reports in international media rarely acknowledge it, the coronavirus pandemic has affected Iran more seriously than perhaps any other country in the world. Out of a population of roughly 83 million, more than <\/span>7<\/span>2<\/span>,000<\/span><\/a> Iranians have died from Covid-19 so far, and the mortality rate shows no sign of slowing any time soon.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, even the Iranian regime\u2019s official assessments acknowledge that the country has repeatedly bro<\/span>ken its record for single-day death totals in July. This is made all the more significant by the fact that Tehran has been spreading disinformation and downplaying the severity of the outbreak since the very beginning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime has only acknowledged about 13,000 deaths so far. The higher estimate reached the international community care of the <\/span>People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/span><\/a>. MEK has been <\/span>announcing the real COVID-19 statistics using its<\/span> connections to extensive intelligence networks inside <\/span>Iran<\/span>. <\/span>The MEK\u2019s<\/span> findings were amplified on Friday<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> multinational teleconference<\/span>, <\/span>the Free Iran <\/span>Global Summit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The global summit <\/a><\/span>connected over 30,000 locations from contin<\/span>ent in form<\/span> of smaller-scale gatherings in accordance with the local public health standards of each region that boasts a significant expatriate community. Elsewhere, supporters of Resistance movement participated in the summit from their own homes or offices<\/span>. Therefore, the<\/span> collective participation in lo<\/span>calized gatherings exceeded the record attendance at prior in-person rallies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The NCRI\u2019s \u201cFree Iran Global Summit<\/a>\u201d<\/span> came not <\/span>despite<\/span> the coronavirus but because of it. The pandemic\u2019s unique impact on Iran has done as much any other recent development to demonstrate the current regime\u2019s unwillingness and inability to manage domestic crises and advance the welfare of the Iranian people. This in turn has <\/span>elevated the Iranian society\u2019s restiveness <\/span>and made <\/span>regime change in Iran<\/span> more urgent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The coronavirus pandemic<\/a> and the 7<\/a><\/span>2<\/span><\/a>,000+ death toll was referenced by <\/span>a number of<\/span> the people who participated in Friday\u2019s summit. Robert Joseph, a former US Undersecretary of State for Arms <\/span>Control<\/span> and International Policy, <\/span>highlighted t<\/span>hat \u201cthe mullahs know the people will never forgive them for the role they\u2019ve played in the tragic deaths of the coronavirus pandemic.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even the regime\u2019s own officials, median and think tanks have <\/span>acknowledged mullahs\u2019 deliberate cover-up of pandemic<\/span>. In March, while assessments of the public health crisis were still in their early stages, the <\/span>Asra<\/span><\/a> think tank release<\/span>d<\/span> a report that acknowledged the growing tensions between the Iranian regime and people, and predicted that new anti-<\/span>regime<\/span> uprisings would <\/span>emerge in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. But in lieu of commenting on the ways in which <\/span>the regime might counter its incompetent and self-serving public image, the <\/span>report urged repressive institutions like the Revolutionary Guard to step up their crackdowns on dissent and prepare for more intense clashes with the activist community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Free Iran Global Summit offered some ideas as to why this is. <\/span>Mrs. <\/span>Maryam Rajavi<\/a>, the <\/span>President-elect<\/span> of the NCRI<\/a> explained that the mullahs are facing a critical impasse in virtually <\/span>every area of public policy. \u201cIf they continue to pursue their current path and course of action, namely\u2026 belligerence, missile launches, terrorism, intimidation and contraction, they will inevitably crash head first,\u201d she said<\/a>. \u201cOn the other hand, retracing their steps and changing behavior will undermine their very rule. This is why the regime is trying to consolidate power in the most brutal agents of the supreme leader.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other speakers <\/span>underscored the ways in which the coronavirus outbreak exposes Tehran\u2019s unshakeable commitment to <\/span>its malign<\/span> priorities that define its theocratic system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe economy in Iran is collapsing,\u201d said Rudy Giuliani, <\/span>former iconic mayor of the New York City<\/span>. \u201cIt\u2019s a tragedy. Even when Iran was getting a flow of money, people in Iran were starving. With coronavirus, the level of hunger and poverty in Iran is heartbreaking.\u201d He then went on to emphasize that the Iranian people\u2019s suffering is a direct result of the regime\u2019s refusal to spend money, no matter how scarce or abundant, on the public welfare.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re still allocating tremendous money to terrorist groups. They\u2019d rather allocate money to renegade groups that want to wreak havoc in Europe than feed their people. They\u2019re crooked. They\u2019re thieves,\u201d Giuliani added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As M<\/span>ayo<\/span>r<\/span> Giuliani said, this is<\/span> de facto theft of public funds has done more than prevent the regime from providing meaningful support to the Iranian people during the pandemic. It has also contributed, over the long term, to the circumstances that allowed Covid-19 to rack up such a death toll in spite of the overwhelming youth of the Iranian population.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s event devoted much of its time to celebrating three nationwide uprisings that have taken place in <\/span>Iran<\/span> since the end of 2017. Numerous speakers pointed to these as precursors to the sort of post-<\/span>Covid<\/span> uprisings that the <\/span>Asra<\/span><\/a> report warned about. The overall message of the Free Iran Global Summit was <\/span>that Iran is on the verge of a revolution<\/span>. Meanwhile, the event\u2019s pandemic setting pointed to the ways in which survival of the current crisis could inspire further activism in its wake.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was <\/span>clarified by<\/span> Tom Ridge, America\u2019s first Homeland Security Secretary. \u201c<\/span>Covid<\/span>-19 could not deter the world from gathering for the cause of freedom in Iran<\/span>,\u201d he said.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>If a global pandemic is ill-equipped to silence us <\/span>or<\/span> keep us from gathering <\/span>to<\/span> support freedom, then the mullahs can\u2019t possibly do it. They tried again and again, and they\u2019ve failed. Over decades and decades, they\u2019ve imprisoned and tortured thousands and thousands of your fellow citizens to silence the call for freedom, for regime change, and they\u2019ve failed.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>They will continue to fail,<\/span>\u201d Ridge concluded.<\/span> \u201cT<\/span>heir grip of oppression grows weaker every day. Th<\/span>e<\/span> voice of freedom grows stronger and louder every day. And this gathering shows the global support for the NCRI<\/a> and MEK<\/a> grows larger and louder every day<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
