In the 1988 massacre, more than 30,000 political prisoners, most of them members and supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK), were executed by the Iranian regime.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Morgan\u00a0<\/span>Ortagus<\/span>, the spokesperson of the United States State Department, in a video message on\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>witter, while condemning the\u00a0<\/span>Iranian regime\u2019s ongoing human rights violations, particularly the 1988 massacre<\/a> of\u00a0<\/span>thousands of<\/span>\u00a0political prisoners<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0called on the \u201c<\/span>international community to conduct independent investigations and do provide accountability and justice for the victims of these horrendous violations of human rights, organized by the Iranian regime.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>July 19th marks the anniversary of the start of Iran. So-called death commissions on the orders of Ayatollah Khomeini. These commissions reportedly forcibly disappeared and extra judicially executed thousands of political dissident prisoners. The current head of the Iranian judiciary and current minister of justice have both been identified as former members of these death commissions. The Iranian judiciary is widely perceived to lack independence and fair trial guarantees. And the revolutionary courts are particularly egregious in ordering violations of human rights. All Iranian officials who commit human rights violations or abuses should be held accountable. The United States calls on the international community to conduct independent investigations and do provide accountability and justice for the victims of these horrendous violations of human rights, organized by the Iranian regime<\/span>,\u201d she said<\/span>\u00a0in a video message on Twitter<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>the summer of 1988, the Iranian regime executed over 30,000 political prisoners in\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>matter of<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0few months. Most of the victims were supporters and members of the Iranian\u00a0<\/span>opposition People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0call by the State Department was simultaneous with the NCRI\u2019s 3-day \u201cFree Iran Global Summit\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>which started on July 17. During this event, the NCRI connected\u00a0<\/span>thousands of people from over 30,000 locations to\u00a0<\/span>Ashraf 3, Albania, home to\u00a0<\/span>thousands of<\/span>\u00a0members of the MEK<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>These conferences were attended by over 1,000 political dignitaries from\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>four corners of the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tahar<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Boumedra<\/span>, the former head of the UN\u2019s Human Rights Office<\/span>\u00a0in Iraq<\/span>, said: \u201cThe crime committed against political prisoners in the 1988 Massacre has been well established and documented. The UN and relevant institutions have been informed and received documents on this issue.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Renowned\u00a0<\/span>human rights lawyer and ex-UN judge Geoffrey Robertson\u00a0<\/span>previously<\/span>\u00a0investigat<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0the 1988 massacre. He told the conference he was \u201cstaggered\u201d by what he uncovered, describing it \u201cas the worst crime against humanity since World War II<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d He said that the perpetrators must be held to account.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs. Rajavi started\u00a0<\/span>the Call-for-Justice movement<\/span>\u00a0in 2016. This movement has had an important impact on the Iranian society and the regime. In this regard<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Mrs. Rajavi said: \u201c<\/span>As you are aware, the Call-for-Justice movement played a significant role in foiling Khamenei\u2019s scheme in the regime\u2019s presidential elections in 2017 where he intended to engineer the election of Ebrahim Raisi, who was a member of the death committees which issued sentences for victims of the 1988 massacre. The campaign was so effective that (the regime\u2019s president, Hassan) Rouhani used it to attract more votes for himself. Opportunistically, he said Raisi did not have anything on his record except 38 years of executions and imprisonments. Two days later, an infuriated Khamenei flanked by Qassem Soleimani and IRGC commanders, slammed Rouhani, warning him against crossing the regime\u2019s red lines.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Then, he openly \u201crecommended\u201d that his functionaries in the Intelligence Ministry write articles and make movies and do something to prevent Raisi from being exposed. In the next steps, when the international Call-for-Justice movement climaxed, the regime undertook its own special schemes which it called \u201ca complex multi-faceted operation.\u201d It recruited a mercenary to distort the objectives of the Call-for-Justice movement, and marginalize the PMOI\/MEK organization and their leadership, despite the fact that the PMOI\/MEK\u2019s destruction was the main goal of the 1988 massacre and Khomeini\u2019s fatwa<\/span>,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 1988 massacre<\/span>\u00a0w<\/span>as<\/span>\u00a0a crime against humanity<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>nternational community must hold the regime\u2019s officials to account for th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0crime.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0As Mrs.\u00a0<\/span>Rajavi<\/span>\u00a0said: \u201cPerpetrators must be brought to justice.
