Anniversary of Iran\u2019s 1988 Massacre of Political Prisoners<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Morgan <\/span>Ortagus<\/span>, the US State Department\u2019s Spokesperson<\/span>,<\/span> on July <\/span>17 <\/span>said<\/span><\/a>: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>July 19th marks the anniversary of the start of Iran<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> s<\/span>o-called <\/span>D<\/span>eath <\/span>C<\/span>ommissions on the orders of Ayatollah Khomeini.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> These commissions<\/span> sent over <\/span>30,000 political <\/span>prisoners<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>a<\/span> matter of<\/span> a<\/span> few months to<\/span> the<\/span> gallows.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The current head of the Iranian judiciary and current minister of justice have both been identified as former members of these <\/span>D<\/span>eath <\/span>C<\/span>ommissions<\/span>\u2026.<\/span> All Iranian officials who commit human rights violations or abuses should be held accountable<\/span>,\u201d the State Department\u2019s spokesperson added.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a righteous call which should have happ<\/span>ened much earlier. The time has come for the European countries to join this call. Recently 31 former officials, and political and military <\/span>figures from the U.S., in a statement to<\/span> the<\/span> 3-day<\/span> \u201cFree Iran Global Summit,\u201d<\/span> which during one of its meetings focused on the Iranian regime\u2019s crimes, <\/span>called for the Iranian regime to be held accountable for its crimes against humanity. They further urged all the governments to send factfinding missions to Ashraf 3, Albania, the headquarters of th<\/span>e <\/span>People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI\/MEK)<\/span><\/a>, to listen to the testimony of over 900 political prisoners th<\/span>ere.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

32 years ago, after regime<\/span>\u2019s defeat during the 8-year Iran-Iraq war, Ruhollah Khomeini, then <\/span>the <\/span>regime\u2019s supreme leader, was forced to <\/span>drink<\/span> the \u2018chalice of<\/span> poison<\/span>\u2019<\/span> of <\/span>a <\/span>ceasefire and end the war which he had said he would continue until the destruction of<\/span> the<\/span> last house in Tehran and reaching Quds <\/span>via <\/span>Karbala. <\/span>Simultaneous with the decision of accepting <\/span>the <\/span>ceasefire, the mullahs\u2019 regime decided to massacre political prisoners <\/span>in order to<\/span> defuse the consequences of <\/span>drinking from the \u2018chalice of poison\u2019<\/span> and fail<\/span>ing <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>war, and to intimidate the Iranian society. In this regard, Khomeini issued a horrific <\/span>fa<\/span>twa, based on which all <\/span>the MEK<\/a><\/span>\u00a0prisoners who \u201cremain steadfast,\u201d should be executed and massacred in all prisons across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Weekly-Signe-up-logo-300x100\"<\/span><\/a>The <\/span>fa<\/span>twa, which <\/span>was <\/span>recorded in history and <\/span>was <\/span>hand<\/span>written by Khomeini himself, clearly orders: \u201c<\/span>Those who are in prisons throughout the country and remain steadfast in their support for the MEK<\/a><\/span>\u00a0are waging war on God and are condemned to execution<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on this decree, over 30,000 <\/span>political prisoners <\/span>were massacred<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

History has witnessed many crimes and massacres, but the <\/span>1988 massacre<\/span><\/a> of political prisoners <\/span>has some unique characteristics:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. This crime was committed based on the written order o<\/span>f the highest official of <\/span>the <\/span>system.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. The <\/span>\u2018<\/span>crime<\/span>\u2019<\/span> of <\/span>the <\/span>victims was only having a<\/span> belief and persevering on it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. All the people massacred were prisoners who had been tried and condemned by the regime\u2019s own Judiciary and <\/span>in few-minutes long courts, <\/span>and <\/span>many had finished serving their prison sentences.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Given these characteristics<\/span>,<\/span> Geoffrey Robertson QC<\/span><\/a>, former <\/span>appeal judge on the United Nations Special Court for<\/span> Sierra Leone<\/span>, described the <\/span>1988 massacre<\/span><\/a> as the \u201cWorst crime against humanity since the <\/span>Second <\/span>World War.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        In <\/span>the <\/span>face of all these characteristics which, according to <\/span>Khomeini\u2019s then-successor <\/span>Hoss<\/span>e<\/span>in-Ali <\/span>Montazer<\/span>i<\/span>,<\/span> resulted in Khomeini and his <\/span>executioners’<\/span> names being recorded as the worst criminals in history<\/span>, the steadfastness of those massacred is a unique example in history, astonishing and even epic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Thousands of prisoners <\/span>were able to decide their destiny, and choose between freedom or death, by answering one question asked by the \u201cDeath Commission<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> The question was: What is your charge? Prisoners knew saying the word MEK<\/a><\/span>\u00a0would <\/span>equal execution, but amazingly <\/span>out of thousands of prisoners in prisons across Iran who were asked this question, 95 percent of them bravely said<\/span> \u2018<\/span>MEK<\/span>\u2019<\/span> and <\/span>that they supported the MEK<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        After 32 years, w<\/span>hat the U.S. State Department today says<\/span> confirms that since th<\/span>e 1988 massacre<\/span> is a crime against humanity<\/span>,<\/span> i<\/span>t is not subject to the <\/span>statute of limitations<\/span>. <\/span>Furthermore<\/span>, <\/span>this <\/span>attestation <\/span>to the<\/span> truth <\/span>is <\/span>a <\/span>reflection of<\/span> the awakened human conscience in the current world<\/span>. It is<\/span> the same conscience<\/span> that<\/span> 32 <\/span>yea<\/span>r<\/span>s<\/span> after the massacre of <\/span>political prisoners<\/span> today acknowledges that <\/span>during the 1988 massacre<\/span>,<\/span> the <\/span>MEK<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>as part of <\/span>its <\/span>40-year resistance<\/span>,<\/span> in choosing <\/span>between<\/span> surrender and martyrdom for freedom<\/span>,<\/span> chose the path of freedom<\/span>, a path that continues and will continue until<\/span> the establishment of<\/span> a free and democratic Iran.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
