The Iranian regime\u2019s Revolutionary Guards (<\/span>IRGC<\/span><\/a>) tested new ballistic missiles d<\/span>uring the second day of the final stage of <\/span>their <\/span>naval drills in south<\/span>ern<\/span> Iran. While<\/span> the<\/span> mullahs are <\/span>wasting national resources on <\/span>the <\/span>military<\/span>,<\/span> Iranian people are grappling with poverty and <\/span>COVID-19<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran <\/span>(PMOI\/MEK)<\/span><\/a> announced on <\/span>Thursday that <\/span>the <\/span>COVID-19 death toll in 347 cities across Iran has <\/span>exceeded 79,500<\/span><\/a>. The Iranian regime\u2019s top officials, such as its supreme leader Ali Khamenei, <\/span>and president Hassan Rouhani, along with cover-up and systematic downplaying of the COVID-19 crisis, forced people back to work, citing \u201ceconomic hardship\u201d and that the economic cycle should not stop. <\/span>Forcing people back to work has amplified the coronavirus death toll, and even the regime\u2019s own engineered statistics confirm<\/span> the<\/span> rapidly rising number of casualties.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, in a report on the regime’s military wrote: “Iran\u2019s official defense budget for 2019 is approximately $20.7 billion, roughly 3.8 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), as passed by the Iranian <\/span>Majles<\/span>.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All the while, since the coronavirus outbreak the regime ha<\/span>s been refusing to pay medical professional<\/span>s<\/span> or even allocate <\/span>the <\/span>necessary budget for combatting<\/span> the<\/span> novel coronavirus. <\/span>Yet, the Iranian regime and its apologists have been blaming U.S. sanction<\/span>s<\/span> as the main reason for the rising number of COVID-19 fatalities in Iran and<\/span> the<\/span> damaged economic cycle.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, t<\/span>he regime\u2019s recent power exhibition alone rejects all its propaganda within the last few months in framing U.S. sanctions, which do not target medications, for the ongoing coronavirus crisis in Iran<\/span>. Meanwhile, it further <\/span>confirms<\/span> the regime\u2019s intention of using COVID-19<\/a> to oppress the Iranian society.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not a first time the regime has been spending money on terrorism and its malign activities while public are suffering. <\/span>In an interview with the state-run <\/span>Etemad<\/span> Online news agency published on May 20, <\/span>Heshmatollah<\/span> Falahatpisheh<\/span>, <\/span>a<\/span> former<\/span> Member of the<\/span> regime’s<\/span> Majlis (Parliament) National Security Commission<\/span>,<\/span> said: \u201c<\/span>When I went to Syria, some complained that I had caused expenses, but I will say this again: We may have given $20-30 billion to Syria. The money of our people was spent there<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, in January<\/span>,<\/span> Ali Larijani, former speaker of the Majlis, announced that with the personal approval of Khamenei, the parliament has approved a 200 million Euro budget supplements to the <\/span>IRGC\u2019s Quds<\/a><\/span> Force <\/a>for the last two months of the Iranian calendar year from the country\u2019s \u201cNational Development Fund<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the<\/span> regime\u2019s wrong economic policies and its institutionalized corruption ha<\/span>ve<\/span> forced <\/span>the majority of<\/span> the Iranian people into poverty.<\/span> Iran\u2019s falling GDP, the rising inflation<\/span> and liquidity growth that has reached over 31 percent <\/span>has put enormous pressure on the Iranian society.\u00a0 The<\/span> state-run <\/span>Eqtesad<\/span> News website <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a> on <\/span>June 4<\/span>:\u00a0 <\/span>According to the Majlis Research Center, the poverty line of four-person households in Tehran has increased from 2.5 million tomans to 4.5 million tomans in the last two years, which means that the inflation rate has increased by 80%, and this inflation rate has led to significant growth in the poverty line in Tehran and other parts of the country. This, along with a significant reduction of general income, has led to an increase in the poverty rate over <\/span>the years, and the available evidence suggests that this variable is increasing in 2019 and 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime uses every cent to fund its illicit activities. All the while, due to its institutionalized <\/span>corruption and adventurism<\/span>,<\/span> Iran\u2019s national currency is rapidly losing its value against the U.S. dollar.<\/span> Today<\/span>, $1 was exchanged at 2<\/span>3<\/span>,<\/span>55<\/span>0 tomans on the Iranian market<\/span>. <\/span>The exchange rate on Friday, June 19, was\u202f18,800\u202ftomans,\u202fand\u202fit has\u202fincreased\u202fby\u202fnearly\u202f20 percent\u202fin less than\u202ftwo\u202f<\/span>months<\/span>. <\/span>In other words, the value of Iran\u2019s currency and the purchasing power of employees and the underprivileged have fallen by 2<\/span>5<\/span> percent in <\/span>less than<\/span> two <\/span>month<\/span>s<\/span>, and the people have become poorer<\/span> in <\/span>a <\/span>matter of two months. In addition, <\/span>the<\/span> freefall <\/span>in <\/span>the value of a country\u2019s currency is an indicator of its government\u2019s absolute economic bankruptcy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So why, despite the evident economic hardship of people and its own bankruptcy<\/span>, is the regime<\/span> test<\/span>ing<\/span> new missiles and brag<\/span>ging<\/span> about it?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grappling with international isolation<\/span> and<\/span> facing a restive society which with its uprising in November 2019 shook the regime\u2019s foundation, the religious fascism ruling Iran <\/span>need<\/span>s<\/span> to boost the moral<\/span>e<\/span> of its demoralized forces<\/span> via this hollow <\/span>show of <\/span>power<\/span>. In addition, the regime needs missiles and <\/span>its <\/span>nuclear program along with funding terrorism to export domestic cris<\/span>e<\/span>s abroad and blackmail the international community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Mrs. <\/span>Maryam Rajavi<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (<\/span>NCRI<\/span><\/a>), has said<\/span>: <\/span>\u201cFor Khamenei and Rouhani, the lives and well-being of the people are worthless. They only want to protect their regime from the threat of uprising.
