Iran protests rattled the regime’s foundations. The execution of Mostafa Salehi was Khamenei and Rouhani’s desperate move to quell society.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Following a show trial, the Iranian regime executed Mostafa Salehi,<\/a> a protester detained during the nationwide Iran protests<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in 2018. This inhumane action was also a sign of the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>desperation since it had previously failed in executing several other detained protesters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime\u2019s Supreme Court had previously upheld the death sentences for\u00a0<\/a><\/span>three<\/span> young protesters <\/span>arrested during the November 2019 uprising. These three youth, Amir Hossain Moradi, Said\u00a0<\/span>Tamjidi,<\/span>\u00a0and Mohammad\u00a0<\/span>Rajabi<\/span>, were\u00a0<\/span>supposed to be executed in July. But an international campaign forced the Iranian regime to halt their execution. In a similar case,<\/span>\u00a0the regime\u2019s Judiciary in the city of Isfahan was about to execute\u00a0<\/span>eight<\/span>\u00a0detained protesters. But subsequent protests by their family members\u00a0<\/span>and locals forced the Iranian regime to temporarily halt their execution.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Protests against<\/span> the inhumane execution sentences did not suddenly change the\u00a0<\/span>nature of the most inhumane\u00a0<\/span>regime<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>the 21<\/span>st<\/span>\u00a0century.\u00a0<\/span>After all, t<\/span>he Iranian regime killed 1500 protests<\/a> in broad<\/span>\u00a0daylight<\/span>\u00a0during\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>November 2019 protests<\/a>. The same regime massacred over 30,000 political prisoners in 1988,<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>simply\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>maintaining<\/span>\u00a0their political beliefs. The\u00a0<\/span>regime has never stopped its\u00a0<\/span>ongoing oppressive measures against women such as compulsory veiling, arresting\u00a0<\/span>intellectuals,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>minorities, and issuing harsh and inhumane sentences such as flogging,\u00a0<\/span>amputating limbs, <\/span>and stoning. But why<\/span>\u00a0had the<\/span>\u00a0mullahs this time\u00a0<\/span>stopped these executions? Why\u00a0<\/span>did\u00a0<\/span>they subsequently\u00a0<\/span>execute<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Mostafa Salehi?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ongoing social and economic crises, due to the regime\u2019s wrong policies, have turned the Iranian society into a powder keg. The nationwide Iran protests<\/span>\u00a0rattled the regime\u2019s foundations. The subsequent general boycott of the regime\u2019s sham parliamentary elections, for which the regime concealed the existence of COVID-19<\/span>, showed the people\u2019s conflict with this regime has reached its height.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, for the mullahs\u2019 regime, as before, taking any action that could spark another uprising is a red line.\u00a0<\/span>On the other hand<\/span>, the regime cannot stop oppression, because it is one of the pillars of <\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>existence. History has show<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0that anything and any individual posing\u00a0<\/span>a threat\u00a0<\/span>to the regime\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>rule\u00a0<\/span>is marked to\u00a0<\/span>be eliminated. The\u00a0 1988 massacre of over\u00a0<\/span>30,000\u00a0<\/span>political prisoners, who were mostly members and supporter<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of the People\u2019s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\/<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>MEK)<\/span>, and were previously tried by the regime\u2019s courts and were serving their sentences or had finished their prison terms, is an example<\/span>. Ruhollah Khomeini, then\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>regime\u2019s Supreme Leader, was forced to accept\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>ceasefire with Iraq\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0the war that he used for\u00a0<\/span>nearly a decade to plunder\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>national wealth, oppress any dissent<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>voice,<\/span>\u00a0and pursue his dream of an Islamic empire.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The war-torn society, grappling with poverty, was on the verge of explosion. As in any other revolution,\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>leading and inspiring movement was needed to guide society. Therefore, Khomeini ordered the 1988 massacre.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran regime\u2019s handling of the COVID-19<\/a><\/span>\u00a0crisis is also another example. Having failed to completely quell the Iranian society, despite brutally killing 1500 people during November uprising,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs\u2019 regime used the COVID-19<\/a> as a silent k<\/span>iller to prevent a possible uprising.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard,<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>he state-run\u00a0<\/span>Mostaghel<\/span>\u00a0daily\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>July 13, 2020, acknowledged<\/a>: \u201c<\/span>Fear of bullets and pressure pushed\u00a0<\/span>back\u00a0<\/span>the people who had hopes of a better life. Yet, the principal players of this game know that what happened in November is a prologue to an upcoming flood from the slums, which will wash everything with it. Now, a savior was needed to divert people\u2019s attention from the November and January\u00a0<\/span>incidents. So, came the novel coronavirus. The government used people\u2019s fear of this invisible enemy to unleash the dragon among them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Thus, they [the authorities] left hungry and depressed people alone in a room with a lion and waited for the work to be done.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regime was willing to execute those detained protesters, but the public reaction terrified the regime in Iran, that these executions could start another <\/span>uprising. But for a regime that is\u00a0<\/span>founded\u00a0<\/span>on domestic oppression,\u00a0<\/span>stopping executions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is a sign of weakness and could further prompt the public to\u00a0<\/span>rise up<\/span>.<\/span> In addition, the regime needed to take action to boost\u00a0<\/span>the morale of\u00a0<\/span>its forces<\/span>, who were disappointed when\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs had to halt the execution of those detained protesters. Yet, the regime knows that executing\u00a0<\/span>political prisoners will further add to the society\u2019s restiveness and might spark a revolution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a nutshell,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>mullahs are in a deadlock<\/a><\/span>. I<\/span>ncreasing oppression<\/span>\u00a0would<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>lead to an uprising<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0not oppressing people w<\/span>ould\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>a significant impact<\/span>\u00a0on the ruling system and its oppressive forces, prompting\u00a0<\/span>people to\u00a0<\/span>rise up<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this regard, Mrs. Maryam\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Rajavi<\/span>, the\u00a0<\/span>Resistance<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>P<\/span>resident<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0said: \u201c<\/span>Reluctantly forced to refrain from executing eight other detained protesters subsequent to the millions-strong social media campaign calling for the halt in executions, the ruling religious fascism carried out this execution in retaliation and in order to terrorize the public and thwart the outbreak of any uprising.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now it is necessary for the international community to act, stand with the Iranian people and prevent further bloodshed by the regime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs.\u00a0<\/span>Rajavi<\/span><\/a>\u00a0urged the United Nations and its member states, as well as international organizations and institutions to immediately condemn this criminal execution. She emphasized that more than any other time, it is imperative to dispatch an international fact-finding mission to visit Iranian prisons and meet with prisoners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
